As for mages, actually for all chars, to receive the best benefits you really can only choose one of the traits it seems. You just will not level up high enough to get to 50 points on more than one trait. So, if you split it up amongst air, earth, fire and ice, you will not be able to use any of the higher levels spells. Now, which trait you choose is based on preference.

For rogues, unless your rogue is going to be on the front line, assassinate is useless. Better to focus on missile.

Just curious, what's your character levels by/close to the end game? It would help me plan out my build if I can estimate how much total skill points I will have.

Seems difficult to focus on just one trait, since front line needs both attack and defense skill, and mage probably need the main element + spellcraft.

Had to restart a couple of time because by level 3~4, my front line seems either underpowered in offense, or lacks defense....tough to find a good balance.

They were all level 13. 13x4 = 52 points, so you can see how it's impossible to concentrate on two traits if you want to max out one. I tended to focus on offense rather than defense because there are more ways of upping your defense through armor pieces and trinkets than upping your offense through weapons. Plus, the way you attack can significantly affect your defense. Learn to use the four-square attack.

I had to start over; my first set of four was just too gimpped; even sekelton warriors were wiping them out (yes i backed into corners to fight one on four; and even ran away lots to heal); when I hite the pack of 5 spiders; i called it quits :)
-
So now I'm a wimp playing with a much stronger party and on an easier skill level (first batch of 4 skeletons died without even resting; so definitely easier).
-
Anyways some questions:
How do you use warriro/rogue skills or are they auto magic ?
How do you use arrows (I find arrows but no bows)
How do you use slings (I find sling but no ammo and don't knwo where to put the ammo)
Is it better to focus on one skill or two skills.
-
My new party is two warrrior (first one had a rogue); and two mages.
One warrior is so far all armor skill the second warriro is all atheltic skill
One mage is all air - with a little spell craft; the second mage is all ice
(in first game teh mage were mix and matches with one mostly earth and one mostly fire)
-
I'm only level 3 in the new game so I think i can safely switch skill points; but its not clear to me how to use some of the skills listed for warriros later on (particularly those associated with weapons).

I think rocks are the ammo for the sling, you find a bunch on the ground. To use ammo, you need to place it in your offhand (the hand your weapon is not in).

You need to find a bow. I know there is one relatively early in the game and you can PM me if you want to know where.

Also skills are automatic. They seem to happen during critical hits (so randomly)

As I noted above, you will never get to the max of a skill if you split your points between 2 or more, you just will not get high enough in level, meaning you won't get enough skill points. However, that may not be a bad thing, just you won't be able to enjoy some of the higher perks.

There are a few places where the enemies constantly respawn till you solve a puzzle or the like so if you really want to flesh out your skill trees you can farm them for however long you feel like.

True, but that will take a long time and get increasingly boring, don't you think?

Definitely going to have to restart - on level 5 [massive amount of puzzles] and the dps output of my group is pathetically low. I started with the default group setup [2 warriors, rogue, mage] - but since finding this page I'll make better choices at setting up a better group and make smarter talent choices [I will admit I have been looking around for a stat editor :) ]

Once you get the hang of the WASDQE movement - you can quickly position yourself behind mobs for some pretty good damage.

The only complaint I have so far is there's not enough food [in ye old Dungeon Master - food would drop from mobs] - I spend a lot of time backtracking to the save crystals so my party regens health/mana.

My warrior went down armor first till he learned Heavy Armor, then switched over to swords. He's definitely my top damage and hardest to kill atm. My rogue does decent damage but when he fails to evade he gets crushed.

Anyone got a pretty clear answer whether there is any loss to throwing away all those shields and spears you find on skeletons? Not seeing any use to them.

^ No loss.

I'm on level 4 and have probably already put in 5 hours. I like to thoroughly explore everything after I clear out enemies and look for secrets I might have missed.

Really loving this game and imagine the puzzles become much more difficult later on.

They do; also there are more timing puzzles which I'm not very good at; the sort where you have to run click run click run click with a very tight timing (think of the one on level 3 where you click and walk through the teleporter; but sequence of click run click run or maybe it was run click run click. The one on level 4 is not very tight; but some of them later on I find more annoying then fun.

You guys are far more coordinated than I am.

I've had a crazy time just getting into level 4.
The Slimes are murder, and the Mushroomers were really beating me up.

I'm just not getting comfortable with these controls the way I'd like too.

It sounds like the timing puzzles are really going tank me :|

I was definitely wrong in thinking I'd get a week out of this game - it may take me the rest of the year ;)

FYI,

They've released the 1.1.4 update for this (not sure about distribution):

Here is the complete changelog:
- vsync is enabled by default
- borderless windows are no longer topmost
- pressing ESC closes character sheet
- fixed unlimited frost arrow exploit
- improved display resolution auto-detection at first launch
- fixed a couple of typos and broken english
- removed check that disables high texture resolution setting when running low on video memory (some graphics drivers seem to report available video memory incorrectly)
- quick save/load
- volume sliders
- to avoid confusion autosave & quicksave slots can’t be renamed anymore
- adjusted gui layout and camera fov so that user interface elements do not overlap with important screen areas on non-widescreen displays
- invert horizontal mouse option
- camera bobbing option (only available by editing the config file manually)
- configurable tooltip delay (only available by editing the config file manually)
- frame rate limiter (set to 120fps but can be changed by editing the config file)
- custom character portraits
- bug fix: very long map marker notes without spaces in them causes the automap to crash
- bug fix: editing a map marker that is on the same exact spot as a marker on the other map page edits them both at the same time
- bug fix: map labels are sometimes drawn partially underneath map symbols
- bug fix: topmost menu item doesn’t work reliably in high resolutions such as 2560×1440
- bug fix: wall text translations are not dismissed when right-clicking
- bug fix: inanimate objects can be backstabbed
- bug fix: projectiles go through doors in some very rare cases
- bug fix: saving the game crashes if all save game slots are full and the autosave slot is deleted or unused
- bug fix: Fighter’s Challenge doesn’t open if there’s an item in front of the door (only applies to new games, existing save games still have this bug)
- bug fix: saving the game just after the end fight creates a corrupted save that can lead to crashes and the end sequence not getting triggered correctly
- bug fix: auto pickup doesn’t pick up the correct amount of ammo in some rare circumstances
- bug fix: standing on stairs and turning with the mouse, followed by a turn using q/e keys is buggy
- bug fix: when a monster is damaged, experience point text sometimes (very rarely) flash in a square where a monster has been killed
- bug fix: trying to load a save game that has just been deleted manually from the file system (e.g. in Windows explorer) crashes the game

The slimes killed me over and over again, so I ended up leaving that area and going down the main stairway and clearing the normal level first. With the extra gear and an extra couple levels under my belt I was able to take out the slimes better.

I do have a question though. Do the treasures do anything? I am finally getting to the point that I am running up against the weight limit with most of my characters and it may be best to just drop them after I find them.

I hit weight limit on level 3, saving those shields and spears... the game scores getting the treasures, but I doubt they do anything. Seem like 'gold' in Rogue.

FYI,

They've released the 1.1.4 update for this (not sure about distribution):

I have it. It's on gog.com, the regular download is now for "version 1.0.0.8", but it actually installs the latest 1.1.4. The orignial release version on gog.com was listed as 1.0.0.6.

Interestingly, the new patch has a smaller installer, 342mb instead of 445mb.

No time to play right now though, going to be checking out the diablo 3 beta for a few.

Guys.

I'm on level 3 where you have spiders right next to the blue crystal. There is a room with 2 teleporters that are shifting in a circle. I'm not sure how to proceed. I assume there is a button somewhere on the level I need to click to turn those off or open the gate to get to the next room. Or if there is another strategy.

I'm going to play now and retrace the level looking for another button, but if someone could be so kind to post a spoiler in case i don't find it. :)

If I remember that teleporter puzzle:

You need to time yourself along with sequential portals. So, wait at the entrance and let the portals pass you by. Then quickly enter the room and follow them, so Forward into the room, then Right once, then forward once. This will put you against the right wall, mid way across. Face right and look across the room. You'll see a pressure place against the far wall. Throw something across and when it lands on the plate it will deactivate the portal in the middle of the room. Step forward onto it, and then across to the far hallway when the portals allow.

Actually, for this one
there is another pressure you need to throw something onto to "close" the pit in the center of the room (it's directly to the left of the pit as you face it). You'll need to get something on the pressure plate to the upper right afterwards - from there it's a timing issue.

I probably spent 30 to 60 (more?) minutes doing what you are. Very gentle hint:

It's not a button to find
