I'm planning on buying an HDTV. Initially I was going for a 42inch, then prices dropped and now the $900 i was going to get a 42inch with can get me a 46 or 47". Ok, so now Im looking at 47". right about to get the next one to go on sale in a weekly ad. I've seen a couple deals recently for DLP's. BestBuy has a 56 inch Samsung $1099 and 60inch Mitsubishi $999. I'm thinking the Mitsubishi. I start to wonder about DLP's and do some google research.
I had previously been avoiding them because I thought there image quality to be extremely inferior. According to every source I've seen they had "the best viewing angles," "bright images," and all that jazz.

I went to the store today. The DLP is not nearly as bright as LCD's. Granted stores image colors are fucked. But the viewing angle sucked too. Overall I Feel like I'm looking at something that's lost all its clarity.

Am I just messed or whats the deal? I always thought LCD's were much better quality... but every website I go to seems to disagree.

And Samsung and Mitsubishi are the onyl companies making DLP's, are they fazing out? If they were so good why are they fazing out?

Two things:
1. DLPs have bad vertical viewing angles. This gets exaggerated when looking at them in stores.
2. The DLPs in the stores have been running in torch mode for who knows how long - that's not going to be good for the bulbs/

Why are fewer DLPs coming to market? I'm guessing it's because people care way too much about hanging their TV on the wall and not nearly enough about how the image on it looks...

DLP has never been best. The sources you get your information from must be crap. What it IS best at is price / size. You will NEVER get as much from a TV per $ as you will in a DLP.

The main reason they're being phased out is because of marketing. "oooh shiny thin LCD" sounds alot better to the neighbors than "big black box with a giant screen"

And that isn't DLP.

To be fair people with LCDs come and see my 67" DLP. Then they whine about why theirs doesn't look nearly as good.

It's not the technology - it's the user. Setup well a DLP will look very good, it's no plasma though. I love SXRD (color!) and I'm a little miffed I didn't pick up one before they were gone.

I have the same TV and everyone that has seen my set has been amazed at the color saturation. The Samsung 61" LED DLP appears to have dethroned the SXRD Sony's as best of the DLP's.

So far people have posted from both sides, LCD and DLP. I'm really leaning towards getting the DLP for the inches and viewing angle.. I just dont want friends to make fun of how fat it is 6 months from now.

Keep in mind I'm looking at a 60inch Mitsubishi. Some reviews have mentioned blurry image or poor color... but all of the unofficial reviews by people who have owned it say they loved it.

If you could get the samsung LED dlps, get them. They use like 170 watts of power (vs 500watts on lcd's/plasmas on similar sizes) and the led lasts the life of the set and no color wheel. I love mine.

Hey I will sell to you my Optoma H31 front projector for $400, and you can buy a 100" screen for under $100.
:)
This way you get optimal viewing angles depending on the screen you buy, and it will cost you half of what your looking to spend with the option of going from a 80" screen all the way up to 300"
Plus you can move it to any room in the house with ease, even outdoor on a sheet. Its not a HD projector but will take in 1080I, and at distances farther then 15 feet away your eyes wont know the difference anyway. Plus if you have any pal movies or games, the front projectors will play them, unlike a TV in a box thats stuck at NTSC.

Anyway, shameless plug and free bump for you.

Mitusbishi DLP's are bottom of the barrel. People who love them rave about how cheap they are for the size but when compared to a high end set they look poor.

Just like there is a difference in $1K 47" LCD's to $2K 47" LCD's there are major differences in the quality of DLP's. The Samsung DLP's are the best out there and you can get a 61" for $1300 or under. One electronics store in Texas was advertising them for $999 and Crutchfield just blew out there inventory at $1299 deleivered and any purchase over $1000 from Samsung got you a $200 NFL Shop gift-card.

The new Mitsubishi Laser DLP's are pretty damn spectacular but at $4K+ for a 65" set is nnot for the budget conscious.

If you are happy with the picture quality and viewing angle of the Mitsubishi set then by all means buy it as you will be the one enjoying it.

Sony never made a DLP. The SXRD's were LCOS.

i was in the same exact boat as you about 2 months ago. was going to go with a 47inch lcd, but after doing a shit ton of reading, i went with a sammy 61a750 LED DLP. it is a bad ass screen, if you go the dlp route, i highly advise you go for the led dlp. like others have said, you can pick one up now for around 1300, just look around. i paid 1500 plus 200 cashback from microsoft just before xmas. i am using the 61a750 right now and typing this message from my lazyboy. good luck!

The viewing angles of DLP are shit. I still don't think you've gotten that.

If you are worried about what your friends think about your TV, you should not pick a TV. Have them pick it.

If they are going to make fun of you on how fat it is, they will say so before you buy it. Unless you are getting a laser driven Mitsu DLP RPTV, go with Samsung LED driven.

PS, no screen is thinner than a projection screen if that is your deciding factor :)

Having had my "not-a-DLP-but-just-like-one" SXRD set for six months now, I can tell you with 100% confidence that no one is even going to notice. Most of the time, they never manage to get much past "your TV is huge" and "the picture is amazing!"

i guess i never under stood why viewing angles were such a big deal. if you have the right stand vertical angles are not a problem, one would have to have a very wide room with a spread out seating arrangement for this to become a problem.

OP, i have not seen a tv yet that made me wish i had made a different choice. the only slight regret i have is not going for the 67 :D.

Got the Sammy 67" LED DLP for christmas. Nice set, big and cheap! I have a sammy 40" LCD upstairs in teh bedroom. Nice set. I like the color better on the DLP. If you want a big set for a nice price DLP is your only option right now. I grabbed mine for 1880 bucks off Amazon in mid November. I am sure it has dropped more. It is funny to tell people the cost of the set because they think a 67" TV is about 4000 or more.

Like Pacfanweb mentioned, it's LCOS and I felt it was/is a great technology for projection TVs.

It's a shame it's no longer being produced.

That's a nice TV erows.

LCoS is still being used in front projection, and it's still awesome. JVC's DLA-HD1 for example is one of the best projectors I have seen in person.

ONLY the the vertical angles. From side to side, DLP is just fine. So if you need a TV to put over your fireplace, DLP isn't the one, unless you can tilt it downward.

LCOS is not like DLP...why are you unable to understand that?

LCOS is great...but LCOS != DLP.

LCOS is actually very similar to DLP... LCOS = Liquid Crystal on Silicon. With traditional LCD light passes through the panels and then recombine. This reduces output level significantly and also wears down the panels. LCOS is a reflective design just like DLP. The only difference is in DLP each pixel is a micro mirror but on LOCS it's an LCD cell. The two are very similar.
