Wait...you're saying a DLP has massive screendoor issues? Did I read that right? Are you SURE you know what the screendoor effect is?

Plasmas and LCD's screendoor effects are FAR more noticeable to anyone than any DLP's is. My Sammy DLP is right at 5 years old, and you have to practically put your nose on the screen to see that effect. But I can stand inside 5 feet from ANY plasma or LCD the same size and see it, easily. I don't see any way that anyone could put ANY plasma or LCD right next to my ancient DLP and stand 5 feet away, and tell my they see screen door on mine as bad as on the other types. Much less the newer 1080p LED models. I'm not saying that mine looks as good as those newer TV's at the proper viewing distance, but strictly talking screen door effect, this isn't even debatable.

DLP's are unmatched in two key areas, especially for people who like sports: Motion blur, and size per dollar. The deliver a fantastic picture for a fraction of the price of the other technologies in the 60" and larger range.

Now, at 50", it's getting pretty tight. The Samsung 50" 1080p plasma that BB carries was on sale last for 1149. That's a damn good price. If I was going to buy a 50 and the DLP was around a grand, I'd spend the extra and get the plasma.

But any bigger than that, and the DLP is pretty much unmatched.

Quite sure.

While I use the term for direct view LCD displays, on a technical basis it isn't accurate to say that LCDs have any screen door effect at all(as on a signal basis it is an artifact generated by fixed pattern noise and the FPN is created by control circuitry utilized in projection style displays).

My Sammy DLP is right at 5 years old, and you have to practically put your nose on the screen to see that effect.

The more out of focus a projection display is, the less it will be visible.

I'm not saying that mine looks as good as those newer TV's at the proper viewing distance, but strictly talking screen door effect, this isn't even debatable.

You are obviously correct there on a technical basis, DLP is the only technology still utilized that can have a screen door effect ;)

I think this singular element is the biggest difference between DLPs and the LCoS systems which, due to how they work, have no screen door at all(I'll just give a source now since everyone seems to doubt whatever I say).

DLP's are unmatched in two key areas, especially for people who like sports: Motion blur, and size per dollar.

My problem with their speed is that I have to look away from the screen during fast motion. Not saying in the least they are not FAR more responsive then LCD or Plasma, just that that is when I see the rainbows pop up. Size per dollar absolutely, never would debate that point. CRTs and OLEDs both are superiod for fast motion, although of course there aren't any viable solutions for either of those in large TVs today obviously.

Now, at 50", it's getting pretty tight. The Samsung 50" 1080p plasma that BB carries was on sale last for 1149. That's a damn good price. If I was going to buy a 50 and the DLP was around a grand, I'd spend the extra and get the plasma.

Honestly- why? You would be willing to spend extra to get a fairly mediocre plasma versus a DLP at the same price point, why is that exactly? Not saying the Sammy is bad, but certainly not in the league of the better Pannys or Pioneers(although obviously they do have the value element going for them fairly strongly).

From your first link, explaining Screen Door Effect:
First, DLP projectors suffer from this effect less than LCDs because, due to the nature of the panel design, the control circuitry isn't as large.

The Samsung plasma is a great TV, and while it's not as good as TV's that cost 3 times as much, I think I'd take it over a DLP that's essentially the same price. It has gotten pretty damn good reviews.

Oh, and my TV isn't out of focus....the screen door effect hasn't been there since day one. That was one of the reasons I chose it over an equal-sized LCD projection TV back then...the DLP had the sharper picture.

Err, yeah, are there even any LCD projectors in production anymore? Didn't think anyone had made them for a few years now. The only models that I am aware of are the RP DLPs and for front projectors the only ones I have noticed have been the LCoS models(although honestly, not something I keep track of very closely).

The Samsung plasma is a great TV, and while it's not as good as TV's that cost 3 times as much, I think I'd take it over a DLP that's essentially the same price.

I am curious as to why you would for the same price. What would make you take a plasma over a DLP at the same size/price point?

Oh, and my TV isn't out of focus....the screen door effect hasn't been there since day one.

Do you not have control circuitry on your TV then? Just watch random colors flashing? Heh, I know those are absurd questions, it's just that screen door effect is a given for the display type- it's like some people try and claim that they don't see blur on LCDs- if they see it or not it doesn't change the fact that it is very much there.

I was just at a BB, looking at appliances, and stopped by the TV section for awhile.

Did some quick comparisons strictly on the screen door effect, and how close/far you had to be to make it go away.

On LCD's I could see it from 4-6 feet away. Clearly. This was on 42-50" LCD's, any brand. Some worse than others, obviously.

Plasmas...I could see it from less than 5 feet. Maybe right at 5 feet. Didn't seem as noticeable as the LCD's to me. They had some off-brand 720p plasma right under a Sammy 1080p plasma, both 50's, and the screen door effect was MUCH worse on the 720p. At the distance where it wasn't noticeable on the 1080p set, it was still easily distinguishable on the 720p.

DLP's....They had some of those monster Mitsu's on an aisle, where you couldn't really get far away from them. While the picture looked sort of....smeary, that close, there was NO screen door effect noticeable.
In fact, I had to get right in front of it (less than a foot) with 20/10 vision to even see a little bit. There is no way possible that anyone can truly have more of a problem with the screen door effect on a DLP over the same size Plasma or LCD. Just isn't possible. Even a Kuro has worse SDE at the distances I was standing than any DLP does.

Now, they might certainly notice some other things they don't care for in the DLP's picture, and that fine, too. But strictly keeping to the SDE, there's no way you can have a problem with that on a DLP and not have a worse problem with it on the other types. It's just almost not even there.

As far as why I'd get that particular Samsung plasma over a same-sized DLP for the same price, it's because I think it looks at least as good if not better, and because it's a bit smaller. I fully agree that Plasma is, if you compare apples to apples, the better-looking TV. No doubt. Even the top LCD's look better. But that's not to say that there's a whole world of difference, like going from DVD to HD DVD. But some differences, to be sure.
Only people like us would probably care about such differences.

But to claim about the LED DLP's being "horrible", I just don't agree with that, and I don't think any professional reviewer has, either.
