On the Westside... You can check out Santa Monica. Downtown Culver City is new and fun - check out Father's Office for burgers. Umami Burger...

The new mall/3rd Street Promenade is supposed to be nicer. You can go to the Little Tokyo in West LA, which is mostly restaurants.

As for rentals, if you're going to work in Santa Monica, unless you work really off, weird hours, stay west of the 405. It's a zoo around rush hour in the afternoon. Sometimes I just wanted to GO to Santa Monica (At a place at Wilshire and 20th) and pick up dinner, and come back to my apt in West LA. It's like 4 miles each I think. It's taken me over an hour before. More if it rains. And that's on every single side street I could think of - Santa Monica, Wilshire sucked, Ohio was my main alternate.

Just don't expect a lot. Some of them are older, and get more expensive as you get closer to the beach. I loved my rental in West LA, but it's East of the 405 (I wanted to be closer to UCLA) and some here freak out that you may have to pay 1700ish or more for a one bedroom. But I had TWO parking spots. TWO.

You can do Beverly Hills, Hollywood... kinda closeby.

Thanks. My job would be down in Playa Vista. Haven't been able to find any decent rentals for SM on craigslist. But I may call and check out this place in W. Hollywood - http://losangeles.craigslist.org/wst/apa/2890249609.html

I think it would be around 10-11 miles from work. Am I looking at a 1+ hr commute?

if you live and work in sm you could possibly bike. There are a lot of bike lanes in sm but there is also a shit ton of car traffic.

sm gets colder because of the ocean breeze. Same with sf though but warmer. SM is very nice. I just work there though 90404 <--best zip code in the country 🙂 I live in 90048 and love that area as well.

Remember you have to both find jobs in the same area. If one of you is working in burbank and the other is working in one of the beach cities you will fucking hate your fucking miserable lives.

The key to enjoying LA is figuring out all the things you like and finding them in your little bit of it.

I'd love to find a place where I could bike to work but some other folks thought it would be too dangerous to do it. I'd be moving out first and she'd come out a few months later, probably without a job. So, we may need to find a short-term rental so we could move if the commuting was killing one or the other.

Burbank = borderline SFV, which is hotter than DTLA, which is hotter than Santa Monica.

I won't go farther into the valley than Burbank/North Hollywood, summer temps are just too ridiculous (100+).

Weather in Santa Monica is awesome, but you pay for it up the ass in the form of cost of living + traffic. I refuse to travel to Santa Monica during peak times.

I used to live in N. Hollywood, now in Encino and spend a lot of time in the west valley in general (Woodland Hills/Northridge). There really isn't much of a difference between the 103F in N. Hollywood and the 107 in Encino.

10 miles from work? Depends on the Freeways. I live 20 miles from work, takes me 30-1hr each way. Also, Playa Vista is nice. You're just north of the South Bay, where I live. Great area down here too. Fathers Office in Culver is a good recommendation. They have veal bone marrow(at least last time I went) fucking fire. Good food in Culver City, tons of stuff. IMO LA is a food lovers heaven. You can find authentic dishes from pretty much everywhere.

Can I assume living south of LAX and trying to commute to Playa Vista would be a bad idea?

I don't know that area at all. I plan to drive around and check it out as it would be closer to work. Any thoughts on Mar Vista/Venice/Marina Del Ray?

Expensive. Culver might be cheaper. I know you're probably going to say "wtf", but look towards the border with Inglewood. I bet you could find some cheaper places Culver/Inglewood border than on the other side of town. Really wouldn't add to your commute and don't trip over the whole "zomg ghetto" shit. You can barely even find "ghetto" any more in LA area. You really have to struggle, even Compton is getting back to "nice" now.

Not really. Depends on where you live. PCH really doesn't have that bad of traffic. Honestly you can move from PV to LAX relatively quickly on PCH. Also if you stay closer to the 110 or 405, you have direct access to anywhere as long as you can drive. It's a car area for sure.

Thanks for the info. I'll drive down that way and check things out.

about the pch. You had better have a alternate route ready because about twice a year it gets shut down for 1 reason or another.

or enjoy the WeHo lifestyle.
