Never lived in either - have worked in both. I prefer San Fran and Silicon Valley myself.

Don't come here. kthnxbye

Lived in both cities for a long long time, I'm not gonna tell you which one's better. But please don't come to LA.

Depends on how brave you are. It's doable but it depends on the route and how comfortable you are mixing it up with drivers who don't give a shit about you let alone see you.

Marina del Rey is nice, expensive, but anywhere on the West Side will be expensive. I liked L.A. but it is just too crowded there now. I'm much happier in San Diego.
Most people biking around the westside on their commute end up getting hit by cars. Friend of mine gave it up because he would get like 1 flat tire a week from all the glass and crap on the roads.

How bikeable is it in LA for commuting? Within a ten mile range, I would bike to work if possible.

Drivers in Los Angeles have no tolerance for bicyclists. You'll get smushed.'

Edit: Having lived in both areas, I would pick the SF Bay Area. I lived in West LA and I was born/raised in the SF Bay Area, and I'd always pick the Bay Area first. I could go on for hours why, but traffic was numero uno (lived near the 405, sucked so bad.)

I voted SF, although do you mean the city itself? LA is a monstrous sprawl of city and highways, whereas SF actually has meaningful city limits, and more of a big city feel in my opinion.

Currently interviewing with a company in Santa Monica. She does not know where she'll be working yet.

Trust me on this. Live in SM or 90025+90049. If you want to save money but willing to drive a bit further, go as far as 90034 or Culver City. If you can afford to buy, look at 90064 for million dollar shacks.

If you're working in Santa Monica, then live in Malibu, problem solved. As a current SF denizen, I can tell you without hesitation that I'd love to be back in Socal, along the shores somewhere.

Been here almost two years, my heart never settled, I guess I'll take it with me when I leave.

It's like a 1 hour commute for Malibu/SM.

What? You don't have your own helicopter?

But, it's an hour commute here, too. And it's barely 8 miles. And I'd MUCH rather sit in traffics along PCH than potholes paradise.

Someone said SF is a nice place to visit, couldn't agree more. If you're even thinking about SF, then forget about space, or parking space (there's nothing more annoying than driving around looking for a parking space, just to dine). While you can somewhat mitigate the lack of living space by paying a ridiculous sum of money towards rent, there are no ways around the parking space situation.

Just for comparison sakes, search Craigslist for housing in Malibu, Santa Monica and SF for the same range, that should tell you a darn good story.

I think that it just depends on what you want. If you want to live in a city environment, then I would choose SF. It would also depend on your job. If you're in technology, then I'd do SF area over LA, too.

when people say its time to move to the west coast... they actually meant the west coast... of the mississippi river. Never cross it. Ever. Its the edge of civilization.

I grew up in San Francisco and have lived in L.A. since the mid-80's.

I vote neither.

No one should move to California at this time.

Both great cities. Sadly the rest of the country wont understand unless they live there. Im sure Ill get a ton of hillbillies out lynching for saying that but its true.

I lived life on another level when I was in Socal. Now shit is just weak..

1. Riding motorcycles year round just wins..
2. The other sex is just better looking. If your into men or wemon.
3. Rust
4. Roscoes chicken and waffles. Ya its that good
5. Closeness, Big bear, Vegas, ocean, mountains, In and out burger
6. Fewer religious nuts. Rather more of them but all different flavors.
7. Del taco
8.Wahoos fish tacos
9.Burrito King
10. Entertainment industry. Buying groceries at rock and roll ralphs at 5 AM and stepping on Fred Savage. ya that happened to me or rather him. I stepped on him accidentally when he was passed out.
11.Convertibles are practical. Ya screw you SOCAL

Ya Ive been drinking but its true.

I lived in both LA>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>SF.

Reasons:

MUCH better weather.
Easier parking (I don't like parking transportation).
Cheaper
better people (yes, you read that right...the SF "we accept everyone as long as you agree with us" shit is old).

I lived in both

LA >>>> SF

I always hoped SF would be a mix between what I loved about LA and what I loved about NYC. SF has great jobs and good public transportation but everything about LA is better.

SF definitely cuz Silicon Valley. Also, Capt Caveman is a negative person so I don't know why I'm giving him advice.
