Police handcuff Georgia kindergartner for tantrum

The Associated Press
The girl was charged with simple assault and damage to property

Police in Georgia handcuffed a kindergartner after the girl threw a tantrum, and the police chief is making no apologies.
WMAZ-TV reports the 6-year-old is accused of tearing items off the walls and throwing furniture at school in the central Georgia city of Milledgeville. The police report says the girl knocked over a shelf that injured the principal.
The elementary school called police after the Friday tantrum. The report says when an officer tried to calm the child, she resisted and was handcuffed. The girl was charged with simple assault and damage to property.
Police Chief Dray Swicord says the department's policy is to handcuff people in certain situations, and "there is no age discrimination on that rule."
The child was suspended from school until August.

Seriously???

Sounds like they tried to avoid it, but she was being a gigantic bitch. Nothing like a little humiliation to put someone in their place, and I hope this did it for her.

A bunch of adults can't manage to subdue a kid? How much power can a kid generate?

And the assault and property damages charges??? wtf...

they did subdue her, then they put her in cuffs.

the faculty was probably scared of being sued, and they should be, because of all these bullshit lawsuits and laws now a days.

Sure they could but how long do they have to do it? Let her go and she flips out again. Like I said, can't touch the kids in public schools around here.

If this is how you think it's best to handle a six year old, then you're right, don't have kids. Education staff should be trained in how to deal with a tantrum? If they needed to physically subdue her, then they should have used tactics for restraint instead of having the cops come in and cuffs her.

On the other hand, this girl and her family may have been a "troublesome" family and the staff are setting her up for expulsion.

what a fucked up society we live in where the school is in fear of lawsuit when a kid is throwing a tantrum.

A friend, 2nd grade teacher, was attacked by a boy with a pencil. Aide comes to help and gets a chunk taken out of her arm for her trouble. 2nd grader, WTH?

yes we do live in a fucked up world. a world where if they tried to physically subdue her and say bruised her or even worse broke her arm due to her violently squirming the ensuing shitstorm would be epic

i can totally understand the property damages. she tour stuff off the wall and knocking around furniture.

I don't blame the school. I blame the PARENTS. they are who are responsible for this.

Six year old kid...

I don't get what you're so riled up about. What does her age have to do with it?

Does the police in that area have a history of handcuffing 6 year olds? Is this a large epidemic of hatred on children by the police chief?

Or is it so possible that one child got so unpredictable and made so many people uncomfortable that the best way to restrain her was through holding her hands together?

a burlap sack could come in handy 😎

If they manually subdued her and hurt her they would be in trouble for using excessive force.

The handcuffs are harsh, but if they can prove the kid was going psycho, they have reason to do so.

I don't LIKE the fact that they did this, but I can see where they would have needed to.

OTOH, if they handcuffed her for simply playing a Lisa Simpson and not eating meat (and sitting in a corner refusing to move), then we are talking unneeded humiliation and degradation.

...why blame the school or parents?

Why can't we just blame the kid?

I am saying how the hell did we get to the point when the only recourse left for the school is to call the cops on a six year old.

It's shitty they had to handcuff her, but what else are they supposed to do? Like everyone else said, there'd be a shitstorm if the principal or someone subdued her and in the process bruised or broke something.

Charges may sound extreme but in reality they'll be dropped and nothing will end up on her record. I think it would be enough to scare the shit out of her though, and maybe she'll behave a bit better next time.
