Sounds like the parents could use some lessons in how to handle children...

FFY

If she was behaving as badly as described, I fully support the decision to use handcuffs. She needs to learn that that kind of crap won't be tolerated under any circumstances.

Police handcuff Georgia kindergartner for tantrum

The Associated Press
The girl was charged with simple assault and damage to property

Police in Georgia handcuffed a kindergartner after the girl threw a tantrum, and the police chief is making no apologies.
WMAZ-TV reports the 6-year-old is accused of tearing items off the walls and throwing furniture at school in the central Georgia city of Milledgeville. The police report says the girl knocked over a shelf that injured the principal.
The elementary school called police after the Friday tantrum. The report says when an officer tried to calm the child, she resisted and was handcuffed. The girl was charged with simple assault and damage to property.
Police Chief Dray Swicord says the department's policy is to handcuff people in certain situations, and "there is no age discrimination on that rule."
The child was suspended from school until August.

Seriously???

Would you prefer tasing?

what a fucked up society we live in where the school is in fear of lawsuit when a kid is throwing a tantrum.

Did you hear about the dad who punched the basketball coach in the face for making the daughter run laps?

What was sad, people posted comments supporting the father for hitting the coach.

In todays society, kids are supposed to be able to act anyway they want, and the adults can not do anything about it.

If someone tries to stop a child from acting up, then the person gets sued, or a compliant filed against them.

I believe there truly have been cases where school 'authorities' physically abused students. I also believe there are legions of lawyers seizing upon every such case to line their pockets every time Johny/Ashley gets spanked for acting out. I also believe there are legions of risk management types haranguing school boards to 'run away' every time anyone mentions the 'L' word.

The solution is difficult. It requires a good many respected educators to risk losing their jobs to stand up to the tyranny of lawyers and the obsequiousness of risk managers.

I remember my first day of the first grade...
First Grade Teacher: Good morning and welcome to school.
Mom: If he acts out, you have my full permission to slap him and paddle his behind. Please give me a call so, I can whack him good when he gets home too.

Did anyone think to call the parents before calling the cops?

Who the hell calls the cops on a six year old?

I can't be the only one who has noticed this. When I was a kid if an adult told your parents you did something wrong it was assumed that more than likely you had done something wrong. Teacher opinions held weight and schools were administered by the administration instead of zero tolerance policies and 911 on speed dial.

It seems these days the majority of parents think their kid is exceptional. Not just exceptional good, smart etc but the exception to the rule. Their kid doesn't misbehave they are misunderstood exceptions. Their kid's inability to get good grades or do homework is because of bad teachers. Their kid's laziness is societies fault not their special little offspring's fault.

I think this mentality existed when I was a kid (I believe that whole indigo child thing was going on to some extent) but every successive generation seems to be worse.

Yes.

According to the police report, kindergartner Salecia Johnson is accused of tearing items off the walls and throwing furniture.

She was crying in the principal's office at Creekside Elementary before police arrived Friday. The report says the girl knocked over a shelf that injured the principal. It also says she was seen biting the door knob of the office and jumping on the paper shredder. And, it says, she attempted to break a glass frame above the shredder.

Shame on the parents for not teaching her to behave better.

Bring back the days when principles could paddle you and we had scary old lunch ladies watching you like a hawk. Where parents believed adults over their child who would have every reason to lie.

This - can you imagine the shitstorm when Mommy shows up and finds a tiny bruise or a hint of redness on little Precious?

Honestly, I don't know how daycare workers do it - the ones where my kid is are absolute saints of patience.

exactly why my wife got out of day care. the money was fucking awesome but the liability was epic. she had one little boy who was just learning how to walk, he fell a few min before he was to be picked up and got a tiny red mark on his cheek. him mom put my wife through the ringer over that. the sucky thing is the parent was one of the elementary school teachers of the school my kids went to.

Paddling wasn't so bad but, I do hope the PE teacher is burning in hell for using the braided plastic whistle lanyard on the backs of our legs.

The only people at a school who are legally allowed to 'manhandle' a child are specially trained behavior specialists. If anyone else tried to the school could get sued (only have insurance for the select few people). Therefore, anyone who says 'why didn't someone just grab the kid?' is wrong and doesn't know anything.

Who knows if they even have these specialists at this school, if not the police are the next viable (read: school is protected) choice.

We had those in my school, they were called 'adults.'

Like I said, that is bullshit. I hope Canada does not head that way though I have seen signs of it.

A bunch of adults can't manage to subdue a kid? How much power can a kid generate?

And the assault and property damages charges??? wtf...

it's not about subduing--it's about punishment for bad behavior. This is something kids need to learn.

Kid needs to learn that such behavior is intolerable in society, well--anywhere.

She doesn't seem to be learning this at home.

I would like to see the city council sue her parents to recover the taxpayer funds spent on parenting this hellish kid.

Lisa: No I can't! I can't eat any of them!
Homer: Wait a minute wait a minute wait a minute. Lisa honey, are you saying you're *never* going to eat any animal again? What about bacon?
Lisa: No.
Homer: Ham?
Lisa: No.
Homer: Pork chops?
Lisa: Dad! Those all come from the same animal!
Homer: [Chuckles] Yeah, right Lisa. A wonderful, magical animal.

:awe:
