I dont mind the draft too much but sure as hell I'm not fighting no war for Iraq. If they send me to Afghanistan, I might not mind that too much.

Cool, get drafted, see strange lands, meet exotic people and then kill them. Sounds better than a FPS.

If conscripts were forced into fighting the war in Iraq Bush would be voted out of office in a New York Minute. It's one thing to support a war when others arer fighting it but it's totally another story when you or someone you love are forced into fighting it.

Latest Major Action: 1/7/2003 Referred to Senate committee. Status: Read twice and referred to the Committee on Armed Services.

Read the date, and quit posting about this!

If we have a draft, serve.
If we don't have a draft, I'd recommend serving anyway. Particularly if you want free college and a leg up on your career.

I'm too old to be drafted. I tried to sign up for the AF. My ASVAB score of 98 (in 1987) pretty much guaranteed me whatever job I wanted. But I have scoliosis and dorsal kyphosis. No Air Force for me. :(

Well, then that's something you should consider when you're thinking about signing up for a free ride in the military. Everyone who signs up for the college money or enlistment bonuses had better damn well reconcile themselves with the very real possibility that they may at some point have to actually FIGHT. When you enlist you take an oath to uphold the laws of the U.S. and the Constitution, and to obey the orders of the Commander in Chief, NO MATTER WHO THAT MAY BE WHETHER YOU LIKE/AGREE WITH HIM/HER OR NOT.

If you sing up to get rich, you're in the wrong place. If you sign up for the bonus/college money, good for you. But don't dare kid yourself that if the time comes and they need you somewhere, that you won't be going WHEREVER they want to send you, whether you like it or not.

I'm so fvcking tired of the threads about this sh!t. Anyone with a cursory knowledge of how our government works would know this bill is dead. It will never make it to the floor. Even if it did make it to the floor, it doesn't have a chance in hell of passing.

I can't believe you people actually believe that there would be a draft. This is just Anti-Bush propeganda.

Tell me this, why would they start a draft when there are already PLENTY of soldiers enlisted in the army already?

I agree, however there is the general consideration of the draft. Although (for now) there are sufficient bodies for the administrations purpose, what happens if we are in Iraq or another Iraq situation in a half dozen years? The current generation of soldiers will most likely not be serving and that leaves the military to be replaced. Where are these soldiers going to come from? Before you say this can't happen, the Russians did not believe that they would be tied up in Afghanistan. I see similar tactics starting to take shape. This may be a war we cannot afford to lose. If that is the case we may not be able to win it either. That means year after year of conflict.

Like I told HappyPuppy, my 5 year old is not going to die in Iraq. We MAY still be fighting this war when he is of draft age. There may be a draft. If he chooses to serve in those circumstances, I will not oppose him, however I will protect him if I can from this charade.

Seeing as how majority of servicemen never see the schooling or grants for it, I'll pass.
Can't go to school while you're shooting people either.

I think just about everyone that's over there fighting went in for the schooling and money. Now look where they are.

Another curious question... what happens to all the out-of-shape / obese people who get name-picked ? I mean, SSS has no details on draftees like height/weight. Do they put them on a program or something ? How'd that work in the past ?

You are in a controlled environment. You will work your butt off and get fed just what and how much they want you to eat.

My dog was getting too heavy. He is being walked more and had his food intake halved. He has no choice.

The equivalent would work for people too.

What about the people that just don't care. The people that don't believe in it?

To the brig with you!

That's a lot of what-ifs. What is WWIII occurs. What if Europe and China decide to team up and attack the US. What if a plague takes out 90% of the US population and the small amount left means not enough military to defend the homeland. Nobody ever said that there wouldn't be a draft ever again (well, if they did they shouldn't have). People said that as things are currently known there will be no draft in Iraq. Sure it could plausibly turn into a 20 year war, but it's pretty unlikely. In case you'd not read the news a lot, whenever you see a few US soldiers killed or a few injured in "ferocious fighting in Falujah", the "bad guys" tend to lose around 40-50. They're going to run out of bad guys soon - and weapons. Based on _likely_ outcomes of this iraq conflict the US surely will not need a draft.
Another curious question... what happens to all the out-of-shape / obese people who get name-picked ?
Running, not eating bigmacs is what happens to them.

this article is retarded, the both bills were introduced MORE THAN A YEAR AGO and nothing has come of it. it also doesn't say anythng about when it would be implemented by. in fact, most of the article IS SIMPLY MADE UP.

i just went to the website that article was purportedly published by, searched for draft, and found absolutely nothing

That attitude isn't going to help one lick when you're campaigning in Mosul later this year, Elfenix!

If the draft is what it takes to defend this nation then I'm all for it. I'm more than willing to go if called up. I would have a very hard time, though, if they instituted the draft for women as well. I'll be damned if I'll let my wife go fight a war.
