The trouble with the moral objections is that it makes you a fair-weather patriot\citizen. If you are not a hypocrite you should be able to say clearly AT THIS MOMENT whether or not you would serve. As a citizen you are not given the right to CHOOSE the conflict, you are called, you serve. If you don't or won't you should leave now, you are not contributing and are not a full-fledged citizen. I am nearly a pacifist. I'm a staunch critic of all violent aggression, but I take very seriously my citizenship and obligation to this country.

I'm sorry but you cannot just say that one conflict embodies all conflicts....that just doesnt cut it.

If it comes right down to it, WWII, sign me up, wouldn't think twice. Because that WAS a war against a threat to our freedom and security, that WAS dying for our country.

Iraq and Vietnam....not even CLOSE. NO comparison.

My obligation to my country is NOT to die for some random BS reason. And that seems to be a point that about 50% of the veterans I've spoken to cannot grasp. They think nothing of the actual morality of the situation and blindly follow the "my duty" line to their grave. Because some people just do not want to look at it and say....would I end another human beings life for something I did not believe in?

Would I kill someone who imposed NO threat to me or my family or my country just because some dim-witted president with the ethics of a used car salseman told me to?

Hell no.

I'm so tired of "I would not fight in this war" being an automatic "coward" from veterans....I respect that they put their lives on the line, and if they believe thats what they needed to do, I support that. But just because they are veterans that doesn't give them to right to call me a coward because I have my OWN beliefs and my OWN morals. And those morals tell me that killing someone else who never threatened me "just because" is flat out wrong.

I don't think they draft government employees...so I'm set. Besides, even if I was drafted I have technical skills that are enough to get me off the front line grunt squad. And even if that didn't work, I'd be willing to fight. Maybe I don't agree with the war, but I'm not going to prison for the lives of some people who get their jollies killing our men and women in uniform.

And by the way, you guys do remember that it was the Dems behind this, right?

Absolutely for real. Recently there are a lot of congressmen calling for this and by all accounts the draft will be reinstated by summer 04. If you're registered with the selective service I'd start running, because it will make basic training all the easier.

Lucky immagrant.

;)

Again, not worried in the slightest.

Even if it was, and I was called up... grand. I've been contemplating it anyway.

We had this topic a week ago.

I would go if drafted.

But if I knew I had a low number I'd try and get into the navy first. See if the ROTC people would take me this late (though I think I've passed the deadline).
