Hell, I sure hope I've got a guy like you to walk behind in Iraq when we're fighting in a war that was supposed to yield WMDs but hasn't and where soldiers face IEDs around every corner.

If there's a draft, I'll go. But drafting soldiers for a war that's unpopular won't yield the best army. I predict that a draft, if incurred, will result in mass casualties for the U.S. and will greatly lower morale in the military.

In all major wars that the U.S. has fought in, popular or not, the citizen soldier (draftees) have always been the most courageous and dedicated. You, on the other hand, I wouldn't trust to change the toilet paper in my bathroom.
You mean the volunteers? I can't imagine that people forced to go would be more corageous and dedicated than people who volunteered.

Then you are imagining wrong.

Been there done that.

Why then does pretty much every modern military commander say that they would much rather have a volunteer army than a drafted army?

How can I trust the government to properly provide for my safety across the world when I can't even trust it to offer convincing evidence of why the war started? A year and a half ago, all we heard was "WMDs, WMDs." Now, it's "making Iraq safer after Saddam." Where were the weapons that we were so SURE of? Why wasn't there a plan for the all-but-expected insurgency that's now cropping up all over Iraq?

The government hasn't offered me ANY convincing evidence that this war was to improve my safety. I have not yet seen convincing evidence that Saddam Hussein or Iraqis were connected with anything that happened in September, 2001, nor have I felt threatened by Iraqis at all in my lifetime.

I would willingly go fight a war if the connections between the ACTUAL attack on our country in 2001 and the war were CLEAR. But they are not. So I'll go to war if I get drafted, but I will NOT go willingly.

i would guess, not positive though, that it means the most courageous come from the draftees, not every draftee is the most courageous

well atleast i'll be to old for the draft by the time this passes.

Also, someone forced into service will not make a good soilder.
What they need to do to get more enlisties is up the bonus for signing on and pay rates.

RVN used to be The Republic of Viet Nam, South Viet Nam to most. I've been banned several times for getting off on tangents telling stories of how it really is, so I will have to pass right now. Thanks for asking, though.

What it means is that when people really get shot at and others have to depend on them, the character of the individual does not depend on if you were drafted or not. When push comes to shove you either have the right stuff or not. When you are in a hole, no one gives a damn if you enlisted or were drafted. It's if they can count on you.

Oh, how wrong you are, youngun.

I'm sure the millions who have served as draftees in the many wars we have fought, both popular and unpopular, would have a few things to say to you. :D
