You guys don't have content insurance in the states? Granted I didn't know of the concept till a few years back when my father had a bunch of stuff stolen from him while he was on holiday. Camcorder, cell phone and a number of other smaller things. He had content insurance, claimed about $1000 and got the money less maybe a 2-$300 deductible. He can't even remember if he had to show any proof of purchase, in other words they didn't give him any hassle at all.

We have homeowner's insurance which usually protects your possessions. Correct me if I'm wrong (I've never actually had homeowners insurance).

So how do you solve my "I lost a bazillion dollars" fraud problem?

How do you solve this with any insurance? How do you stop someone claiming for the dozens of gold bullion bars that were in their car when it was stolen? Or the fine jewellery that was taken when their house was robbed? I'm thinking you don't really understand how insurance adjustment works.

Again, I'm amazed you guys don't have this type of insurance. No one would own a home here without it, and almost everyone I know who rents has this insurance.

I'm guessing they have something similar in the states. Like I'm fairly certain people can insure the goods in their home from theft. But maybe what they are not familiar with is claiming small items like ipads, cell phones, cameras and the like. Especially when not stolen from the house?

Well the way it works here is that you have insurance on household items (known as contents insurance). These items don't have to be in your house when they're lost/stolen/damaged/whatever. I would be surprised if that's not true in the USA. Unless the typical excess is very high there - as I said, a typical excess here is around $250 (I'm pretty sure that's what mine is).

edit: For example, if someone breaks into your car and steals your laptop from the front seat, you'd claim this on your contents insurance, not your auto insurance. The lower excess makes this totally worthwhile for most newer tech gadgets.

how do you avoid the ridiculously high likelihood/ease of fraud?

Its called renters insurance dixy, they even insure my combat gear incase of loss. It covers all your stuff.

Each institution has its rules for it , but its worth having and its cheap.

i don't think most insurance companies even give you half the value of claimed items. And i think you have to obtain serial numbers of each item but i've heard that pictures and reciepts are a good asset to keep.

though i never claim on petty items. my stepson's friend stole a camcorder, my psp and couple little things but i never figured those were worth claiming for..especially since i'm sure they would hike my premiums

in the US you can also get separate insurance coverage for personal property, they ask for a description of the items, serial numbers (if applicable) and value
then combine it all to give you an estimated monthly fee

it's pretty cheap, and very useful since they will cover certain things even if you're not using it at home (traveling with cameras)

I am pretty sure they will only give you the "like" replacement cost though, so if it's an old laptop/camera or something don't expect full value... on the other hand things that hold value well (camera lenses) will be repaid pretty well

I actually don't know many people first hand in the US who get it though. I think it is worth it, depending on your equipment. They usually just rely on auto or homeowners insurance.

Unless you're paying an assload for this insurance, chances are your deductible is more than the ipad cost. Renters insurance is only good when you suffer a substantial loss.

Like Mike said some way it's avoided with any other insurance. If it's small stuff you are claiming and you have a long history, aka are a good customer, they probably won't question your claim. If you are a new customer and you are claiming something large or suspicious I imagine they will give you a hard time about it.

I know my father didn't have to do much when he claimed his camcorder, cell phone and other stuff. He can't even remember if they asked for a receipt. I know he never document the serial numbers or took pics of the stuff. That was about a $1000 claim and his deductible was something like 2 to $300. So yup it was worth it there, and would be for lots of things.

The insurance companies here won't ask for serial numbers and photos, they they'll certainly support your claim. They'll definitely ask for receipts where possible, but they'll also understand that people don't always keep receipts for everything.

the fuck?

they just give you money for being an idiot and losing your shit?

is this why they just give houses to people who simply choose to sit in them?

You guys are soon to follow Greece.

I've gotten really pissed before and lost a fairly expensive phone and my glasses and claimed for them on my contents insurance. Told the truth as well.

So yes they will just give you money for being an idiot and losing your shit. 🙂

Not sure how that fits with the Greece bit though, I'm not seeing how international insurance guys are part of the financial crisis.

Um... didn't Apple make the "find my iphone/ipad" app free a while back? For your next one why not have it installed and set up just in case.

What does it do, log where the person last hit a wifi spot? I remember seeing one that turns the camera on remotely, but what happens if the person removes the app?
