They already sell the Agilex FPGA line on 10nm, and I would certainly expect those to be at least 200mm^2.
Those FPGAs aren't sold at the kinds of prices mobile APUs would be.

200mm^2 on 10nm isn't crazy because it's a large dies size (it's not), it's because it would be expensive as all hell because of the craptastic yields Intel'd been having on 10nm thus far. Especially when we're talking about a chip with a larger focus on CPU than iGPU (GPUs tend to be easier to cut down due to yields as they're multiple small repeating blocks).

Sure, they do sell those for significantly more money -- but it has also been 6 months since then and when is Tiger Lake going to ship? Another 6 months from now? Getting 200mm^2 dies at consumer pricing should not be an issue at that point. It's not like the 10nm process is frozen in time, nor is a 200mm^2 die particularly large in the grand scheme of things.

Well, in any case I never doubted getting 200mm^2 dies at consumer pricing, my main concern comes from being able to supply the market adequately in volume. Something that will still be tricky when Tiger Lake launches, to say the least.

Also, my die size estimate was only half an estimate. Tiger Lake has a lot of silicon dedicated to Thunderbolt, the IPU and some other stuff that isn't present in CFL-H and prior to it that you need to consider.

Yeah, I mean time will tell ultimately. I mean honestly, the more I think about it, 200mm^2 seems like a pretty reasonable estimate -- unless they decide to do what AMD did and reduce the GPU area to make it smaller (and instead rely on clock speed) -- but that seems pretty unlikely.

Well they have been havng issues with 10nm for years so another 6 months won't magically fix a broken process. 200mm2 isn't large true, assuming you process is actually working and not mostly for "show for the shareholders".

Why is icelake-sp delayed again? Why do we still get 14nm desktop? It's obvious, 10nm doesn't cut it with anything else but small 4-core mobile dies.

8c Coffee Lake is only ~174 mm² die size

8C Tigerlake-H won't be that much bigger, even if its same as -U but with 4 additional cores.

About 40mm2 for 4 cores, so it would end up at 185-190mm2. They can also cut the IPU, as its pretty much for 2-in-1s and Tablets. If they go for 32EU GPU and it results in half the size(~20mm2) then that's additional space that can be saved.

8-core, 32EU Xe, sans IPU Tigerlake-H can potentially end up between 155-170mm2.

The only issue is what will they do with the desktop? 8 high performance cores can cover most of the desktop, but they'll have no answer on the high end. There's Rocketlake. So will that co-exist with Tigerlake-H as Cometlake does with Icelake?

10 nm was for shareholders in Cannon Lake i3, CPU that had huge problems with availability and should never exist.

They had huge problems with launching production in 10 nm. And even when they managed, they got crappy product. 1 (1,5?) year later Ice Lake launched with mild availability problems (I assume so, otherwise we wouldn't get Comet Lake U version). One more year and TGL should be fine, imo. Seems like they're improving 10 nm process quite fast.

We get no 10 nm desktop because of much lower clocks. Look at Ice Lake vs Comet Lake - there is huge difference in clocks and we're still talking about power constrained variants. In desktop difference should be even greater.

Just a rumor, there might be an Intel SoC coming sooner than later on TSMC's 5nm.

x86-64 Softmachines(An Intel Subsidiary) <== External Foundry sign-off (@TSMC heavily implied to be 5nm and is at the fab currently.)

Core/Atom might go the way of Itanium. Being supported for a time but no longer focused.

TSMC N5 => xyC-U
Intel N7+ => ONC-P

Further, the cores are split in four clusters and there are four cores. With the 7nm+ one being 6cluster+6core+1level2, rather 4cluster+4core+1level2.
Clusters are 3-ALU wide, making the N5 product core 12-ALU wide. While, the 7+ cluster appears to be targeting 4-ALU wide making its core 24-ALU wide.
PRF(per cluster) -> PRC(shared across all clusters) -> L1D(buffer to L2, per core) -> L2(shared across all cores) -> L3(per core cluster-buffer to L4, an option) -> L4(shared across all core clusters, an option) // an option seems to be only for server, the mobile products stop at the L2.

Icelake is maybe 10% of laptop volume. Most likely less, somewhere in the 5-10% range. Retail is only a portion of laptop sales these days, almost all of Intel's sales comes from Corps buying in bulk and they are being given Whiskey Lake.

Intel recent high end cpu for laptops was dual core at around 100mm2 or even less, now suddenly intel would release a massive 200mm2 cpu on a process that doesn't work, just no.

I hope it was sarcasm in all your post right?

Or suddenly you could also say: Intel has had ≥ eight core desktop chips for years.

Oh wait you where talking of the intel high-end mobile quad core atom's.

What are you talking about? Intel has had *hex* core mobile chips for almost two years, and mobile quads since 2015.

Intel released their first quad core i7 mobile processor in 2009. The i7-720QM.

I have a different definition of mobile versus intel, amd, ...

To me mobile intel chips are the Y, U and M.
The MQ, HQ, HK and others are not 'mobile', they are intended for Desktop Replacement Laptops meaning huge power bricks, when the intel desktop T line of cpus are more mobile friendly than those nothing else needs to be said.

A quick trip to the intel ark only one cpu is hexa core released in Q3 2019, so not years like he said.
The others cpus, almost all models are 2019 releases...

A big surprise to me was seeing some 2012 models from the 3rd gen, so in 2012 with a supposed much worst process intel already had the ability to do quad core mobile cpus with very nice efficiency, too bad they didn't keep it up.

But the all point was not even quad core, it was 10nm eight core cpus with 200mm2 being possible and available, when the quad core laptops were not the commonly found in high end laptops (example: i7 7500u/7600u).

Intel's naming is getting ridiculous. Hopefully they work on that when they finally end up releasing a new architecture. AMD's naming also needs work, though it's much simpler than Intel's. If someone were to ask me which Intel 10 series mobile CPU was faster/better, I honestly could not tell them without Googling it.

seems you forgot about Kaby Lake - R which was 4/8 U CPUs at the end of 2017?

Just because fiat wants to sell me a car, and i look at it and i see a truck, it isn't up to fiat to decide for me what is a truck or a car, nor does make fiat right or wrong.

That's strange since those are only 15W tdp cpus, why didn't those show up, you can click on the ark link i provided. The list was made by the intel ark, with the filters i added, or it would be full of quad core atoms...

Since i thought the R line was embedded cpu, tried that list and one eight core model showed up the Intel® Core™ i7-9700TE Processor, is that the one inside the mac book pro 16?

Wait, so you don't like going by their definition of mobile CPU, yet you go by their list of mobile CPU SKUs? Seems to me all Fiat needs to do to sell you a truck is to give you "their" car list.

A friend of mine have one lovely 'mobile' pentium 4 laptop, just because it is listed has being so, doesn't meant it really is.

And again my all point was most intel laptops with high end mobile cpus were dual core not long ago.
Intel is only now with ice lake and tiger lake realistically moving for mobile quad core cpus has the default for oem laptops.

That's strange since those are only 15W tdp cpus, why didn't those show up, you can click on the ark link i provided. The list was made by the intel ark, with the filters i added, or it would be full of quad core atoms...

Since i thought the R line was embedded cpu, tried that list and one eight core model showed up the Intel Core i7-9700TE Processor, is that the one inside the mac book pro 16?

It’s not -R line, it’s KBL-U Refresh (short form KBL-R). Check on the link in the list you shared for i7-8550u, it’s a KBL-R part. Quad core released in Q3 2017. My company laptop is using KBL-R and I’ve been using it since 2018.

Thanks for the info, didn't know that my mistake.

We normally only get reviews of some model(s), for mobile only core range, atom excluded, since 2006 according to intel ark, intel released 450 cpu models.
It's impressive they have done that, but also excessive, it's next to impossible to keep track of everything.

Some sad news about Intel's 10nm nodes (courtesy of WCCFTech):

[question asked about state of 10nm]
We are definitely in the 10m era and we launched Ice lake client at the end of last year. We have GPUs coming out -uh- a discrete GPU coming out this year. We have networking ASIC, obviously - at the end of the year. We have the server SKUs coming out on 10 -uh- interestingly and indicative of how we are approaching process technology going forward, we also have 10+ coming out this year.
And what we said is it is important to launch a new node as it is to launch intra node Improvement every year and so we will have we have our Tiger Lake client product coming out. It's going to be on our 10+ node. And so I've been told by our client team that I'm not allowed to talk about how much incremental performance is going to come out of that. But there's the idea is to have a step function moved without having to wait for 7nm in between those and we'll be able to talk about that as - since it's hard to find a conference where we've been able to talk about some of these things which we were planning on doing - but we'll get the information out.

Yeah. Yeah, but they're not they're not gonna let me talk about it first.
You know the right people doing the hard work on the product will talk about [it] but so you know, I feel like we're in that 10nm node era. It's important that we're continuing to see yield improvements rate-ably over the time period but as we said back in our analyst day in May of 19 look, this just isn't going to be the best node that Intel has ever had it's going to be less productive than 14 [nm], less productive than 22 [nm] but we're excited about the improvements that we're seeing and we expect to start the 7nm period and at a with a much better profile of performance over that starting at the end of 21

Faster than Coffee Lake gen9/10 CPUs will only be released in 2022 which means AMD has all the chances to gain an even greater market share with its Ryzen 4000 CPUs. Looks like the 10nm node is pretty much unsolvable in regard to clocks/power consumption.

Let's just hope they will have a working fast and efficient 7nm node by 2022.
