Unless there's an easier way to do it than use Display Properties/Advanced/Geforce4 ti4600 (tab)/NVRotate item, click your selection and then "OK" button, Pivot Pro is far easier to use. Pivot Pro sets up an icon in your tray for easy access, or you can get its menu by right clicking the Desktop. It came with my Planar PX191. However, I've never gotten in the habit of using it in the 1.5 years I've had my Planar. I've done virtually all my computing in landscape. Maybe dual monitors will motivate me to try using portrait for both displays. That would seem to be more ergonomic. However, video wants to be in landscape, as I discovered last night when I brought up my MyHD 120 HDTV card's application. It doesn't get rotated by Pivot Pro, and probably not by NVRotate either. I just tried NVRotate to get portrait and when I hit the Apply button, my screen went to 640 x 480 and a dialog popped up saying that NVRotate couldn't apply portrait to the current resolution! I'm running in 1280 x 1024, 32 bit truecolor. Just wanted to try it. Well, I have Pivot Pro, so no biggie.

He even stated that he didn't want me to be without a screen over the weekend and there was no need to rush UPS pick up as they wouldn't be recieving the next shipment of replacement monitors until 3/16 anyway.

BTW, I kinda got the impression from him that he would be out of the office until Monday. Something in the way he said "call me Monday morning".

FWIW.

I sent off my warranty request form and a copy of my invoice tonight, so hopefully I've at least got the wheels in motion.

Best of luck.

I can see that dealing with these guys is considerably a YMMV situation. Yep, I had no clue in the world that UPS was going to knock on my door. I still don't have my RMA number, presumably a requirement before anything happens.

Andy, IIRC, basically said they had everything they need from me. At that point I'd attached a scan of ebuyer.com's printed online invoice and a scan of the printout of ebuyer's email confirmation of shipping of the display - Ebuyer didn't include any paperwork with the actual package. Andy said he needed me to get them the filled out "Monitor Warranty Service Request Form", so I filled it out, put my serial number on it, the blurb about the symptom, etc., scanned it and faxed it to him. It's supposed to double as a packing slip when I send the display - you put your RMA number on it, however I haven't been able to get that from them!!! I'll try calling them now. I expect UPS to be knocking on my door sometime in the next several hours. I guess I can just give it to UPS and figure I'm cool, but I'd like a little more confirmation from AVC tech. I'm not worried. I like to go for certainty, though.

Edit: Just called them and again only got the answering machine. I guess you're right and Andy is OOTO. I implored somebody to call me ASAP with the RMA number. I suppose I'll just give it to UPS if they come first, WTH.

Edit2: UPS came and had a sticker for the box. That sticker had the RMA number on it. AVC Tech never returned my calls or my email asking for my RMA number.

I am happy to report that my unit came today (only 2 days from order to delivery) and it has 0 bad pixels of any kind!

Whew-what a relief.

Now, if someone would please let me know the best way to get things adjusted to resemble "normal" CRT looks, I would appreciate it. I cut down the brightness, but things seema little "weird" to me. Using an ATI 9600 pro card on DVI.

Thanks

Hyundai made the finest 19" CRT I have ever used, so hopefully that quality translates over to LCD.

How could that have hapened? Makes me worry about getting one and transporting to to LAN's with a Case Ace Gear Grip. (http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=11-999-994&depa=0)

I've got some sony X73s right now that have been with me to about a dozen LANs in my Grear Grips ... and haven't had any problem.

Are these 19" LCDs more sensative? My Sony X73s just hearty? or was there something very odd that happened to them in shipping?

I've seen a couple places where people suspect this is shipping damage, but I really don't think it is. At first I thought maybe the feet of the base somehow got pressed against the screen, but they're round. There's nothing in the packaging that would leave marks like are visible on the screen. Also they come very well packaged, and my box was in perfect condition. I'd say it's more likely a manufacturing defect.

In your case I think it's more likely a manufacturing defect. Those postage stamp size and shape aberations seem like something that somehow happened in the factory. Can't imaging that shipping could do that. But I have to wonder that they don't QA the displays enough to catch that. It wouldn't take so much as 15 seconds to catch that one.

In my case, shipping damage seems more plausible, but it could just as easily be a problem that was there when they packed it in the box at the factory. Like I posted elsewhere, my box had enough damage where I suspected some UPS guy threw the box against something. I guess that could have done it. I cringe when I think of that happening to a boxed monitor. My first new monitor (a 17" Nanao CRT that cost me around $1000 around 10 years ago) I picked up personally from the distributor, a round trip of probably about 70 miles. Since then, I've generally been unable to even find the display I want locally to see first hand, much less buy it. It's a roll of the dice, I figure, when you have a monitor shipped to you, but what can you do?

The problem with the L90D+ if you are thinking of transporting it is that the base is very difficult to remove, at least mine was, and several other people have had similar difficulties. It was presumably designed to be easily removed, but I think they screwed up with that design. You are supposed to be able to remove the base by pinching the tabs together, but in my case it didn't release. It was a very frustrating and anger-provoking experience when I had to remove my base to ship back for my RMA. I managed it, but I hope to hell I never have to again.

I just got mine here in the office. Dying to go try it out. Sorry, this is my first LCD... what programs or sites can I go to, to check for defects on a LCD? Any things to look out for? I'll report back when I get home and let you know of any defects...I ordered mine from Chiefvalue for $350 + $10s/h. Arrived in 2 days from California. I'm very impressed with Chiefvalue so far.

I have a question to those who already have the monitor.

How consistent/even is the color from top-bottom, left-right when viewing the screen at regular height/angle?

Looking at the "problem" pictures posted it seems that the color shifts quite a bit from top to bottom.

I have a 15" LCD (IBM laptop) doing 1600x1200 and though i love it, the colorshifting gets really annoying when working on graphics on the road. I'd love to clear up some deskspace by switching from a 22" AG CRT to a couple of LCD's.

Thanks.

Dead Pixel Buddy: http://www.laptopshowcase.co.uk/downloads/DPB.zip
is useful for identifying dead and stuck pixels.

NEC-Mitsubishi Brightness Controller: http://www.necmitsubishi.com/products/support/Drivers.cfm
A very bright monitor. This utility lets you lower the brightness for text screens, but retain brightness for videos, games, etc.

If you sit directly in front of the screen, and have your eyes slightly below the top, there is very little if any color shifting. Moving your head down will cause the top of the screen to darken, and moving left or right will cause the color to get a sepia (lt. brown) tint.

Viewing angle is a trade off for the speed of this monitor. I'm not a grapic designer, but do use photoshop and do some video editing. I think the colors are better and more accurate on this screen then they were on my 21" Hitachi CRT.

The viewing angle on mine is pretty good, although it is definately brighter at the bottom than the top. Don't know if thats normal, will see when my RMA comes in.

edit: But I do want to add a good note so far, i've been playing a lot of JKA (bright colors, very fast motion) and I see zero ghosting. When they say 8ms, they mean it!

My only suggestion is to install NEC/Mitsubishi Brightness Controller, linked in the post by bdubya 4 hours ago.

Appreciate it... ran it and found 0 dead pixels. This monitor rocks... Can't believe I stuck with CRT's for so long. I was having doubts about dropping 350 on another monitor when I already have 2 19inch crts but this was well worth it. This puts my Samsung 955 and Viewsonic G790 to shame.

Pivot Pro sets up an icon in your tray for easy access, or you can get its menu by right clicking the Desktop. It came with my Planar PX191. However, I've never gotten in the habit of using it in the 1.5 years I've had my Planar. I've done virtually all my computing in landscape. On both the Nvidia & ATI control panels, you can set hot keys to switch between screen orientations.

Yeah, I discovered that today messing with nView. However, on my system it was screwy as hell. I kept getting messages that there were exception errors when I pressed my key combinations, however the orientation would change even though I hadn't completed the process of setting them up. Near as I could tell, I had to choose one key combo and it could be for 90, 180 or 270. It's just lunacy. Pivot Pro seems much better. There's an icon in the tray and you just click and choose. Maybe if nView is set up right it's better, but I couldn't get it set up.

Now, if I hit my key combination (Control + Shift + R), I get a message followed by a 90 degree image rotation. The message is this:

------------------------------------
Program error
------------------------------------

explorer.exe has generated errors and will be closed by Windows.
You will need to restart the program.

An error log is being created.

OK

------------------------------------

In all honesty, I'm pretty sick or reinstalling nVidia drivers. If I can live with the idiosyncracies of the driver I have installed, I will do so. If I have to reinstall, that's a different story.

With an ATI just right click the taskbar icon, select rotate, and chose which direction. Two clicks. :)

Mmm, well you have that with the nVidia driver too, actually I now see. Only problem is that for some reason it takes 4-5 seconds for the menu to appear when I click or right click the nView icon in the taskbar. Then, of course, you have to choose Rotation Settings and make your selection. The Pivot Pro icon brings up what is virtually the nView submenu as its main menu, and instantly at that, IOW much more convenient. I wouldn't pay for it but as long as I have it I'm sure going to install and use it. I'm fine with my nVidia card right now. It's pretty powerful and the best thing about it from my POV is the fact that I can run it fanless with my Zalman heatsink. My PC doubles as my HTPC, and it's so quiet I can't hear it when my front projector is on (i.e. its fan is louder).

Found 6 defective pixels so far on mine (the defect was very light on a few). I faxed in my paperwork as requested and they said they would process and advance RMA for me immediately, although who knows what will happen from here. Hopefully a new one will show up on my door in a few days.
