wow... and i always thought all murder was illegal... learn something new every day.

If someone breaks into your house, in most places, you can kill them legally.

actually that's not true.... if you can escape your house, you cannot legally kill the intruder.

illegal murder?

if Murder was your point then why not say so from the begining? you said that no sane person would ever kill another. now you are backpeddeling.

I assumed everyone knew I meant illegal.

I guess you make it invalid to say, "only an insane person put their hand in molten lava!"

But what if someone held hostage a 100 people and said they would kill them all if you didn't do it? That wouldn't be insane. See you can twist it anyway. I'm not backpeddling, I just assumed more people ATOT have common sense. I should have know better.

ok maybe murder was too extreme of an example. Lets use the example of drunk driving. NY has a law that if you are caught driving drunk you lose your car. Do you think people are not driving drunk anymore?

right. but that is not murder.

my point was if you ment murder then you should have said that. instead you said "If you would go as far as to kill another human being, you're not sane. That is a fact" wich is not the same or even close.

if you think its the younger gen that speeds your the disconnected one..
pull your head outa the sand and look around..
here where i live in Upper Middleclass Sugar land Texas..
its all the 40-50ish yuppies in thier BMWs and mercedes.. and the soccer moms in thier escalades and hummers..

The fact that you cannot spell "definitely" makes me believe you're not very old.

FACT: The younger you are, the more likely you are to speed. No matter where you live. That is a cold hard fact. Undebatable. End of story.

Yes older people speed to. I'm speaking from a statistical standpoint.

you say fact, but you don't back it up???

I watch closely (it's fun to count how many people are on cell phones during my commute) and it's young, old, families, soccer moms, a lot of people. Not to say this won't help, but to make that statement, call it a fact, and not back it up WITH fact is shens....

btw, here, they made it $100 every mile an hour OVER in school zones, and it had a significant effect on people speeding through school zones (10 over is a 1K fine) PLUS the judge could force you to do community service instead of paying the fine, and put you out there as a crossing guard (happened to someone I work with...she wished she could just pay the damn fine).

Maybe high fines + community service scraping peoples remains off the blacktop :D

Ok you count cellphones as your evidence.

Now call your insurance agent or an insurance adjuster, or a police officer and ask him who's more likely to get in an accident. They'll all tell you younger you are, the more like you are. That's my evidence.

I cannot even believe someone who think age and speeding habits are not correlated. I'm seriously, some of you were born yesterday.

To get back on subject, I think the point everyone is trying to make to the OP is that no matter what the penalty is people will commit the crime whether it is intentional or unintentional.

I would go under the speed limit so the government would have to pay me $1000 everytime I drove.

I have a friend who has this opinion and it is absolute bull$hite. The fact is if everyone drove under the speed limit with a huge gap between them and the next car traffic would be a nightmare and we'd need more roads. Your argument is idiotic.

So if we all drove 5mph slower, they'd have to build more roads? Riiight. Yeah I'm the one with the idiotic argument.

Don't twist my words. Read my post again. Yes, if everyone drove 5MPH slower with a large gap in front of them traffic would be awful and we would need more roads. Yes, you're the one with the idiotic argument. If you don't believe me go back and read this thread and see all of your supporters. Wait, I'll save you the time: ZERO

except...

there may be les accidents, and those are what REALLY slow traffic down during rush hour on a freeway...

"is there any blood, can you see any bodies"

Yes, insurance rates are a good indicator, you are right. They spend millions to do studies and statistics to find out who is the higher risk. /nod you have us there...so if you don't think that age/gender grouping has a higher chance of speeding, then argue the insurance companies.

I partially agree with you.

I fvcking hate speeders. Some people feel safe rocketing along the highway at 90 mph. I don't. So, I'm the one that gets honked at, cursed at, and tailgated. Then, I'm the one that has to slam on my brakes when the jackass passes in a no-passing zone and almost wipes out the oncoming traffic.

Having said that, I don't think large, straight stretches of interstate should be enforced in the same way as rest.

If less people were speeding, less cops would be needed to monitor speeders, and more could focus on serious crime like gangs and violence. Or in low crime areas, less cops would be needed in general and taxes would be lower.

I would give the $1,000 fine to anyone going 5mph or more over the speed limit.

I think people would say speeding is not worth the risk if it meant a minimum $1,000 fine.

I don't think people would be less likely to speed. They'd just be more pissed off when caught.

I agree with you. But if this fine were in affect, it wouldn't matter because apparently there aren't any police enforcing the already set in place laws on these roads you drive. So what would be the point?

When I first got my drivers license, I use to speed like mad. But when I was about 19 or 20, I learned that if you drive more than 20mph over the speed limit (which I often did), you automatically get arrested and sent to jail for the day.

I have since NEVER sped faster than 20mph over. I am always conscious of going 20+ over. Explain that.

Others I've talk to are too. They've had the same experiences.
