would be opressive, tickets need to scale with income. right now they mostly punish the less well off. wealthy just shrug off tickets.

Cops would rather hunt down the working man than the drug dealers no matter what the fines. It's easier and less dangerous!
Seems logical to me! ;)
lets pay you what a cop makes, and see how willing you are to put your life on the line all the time.
A cop makes $60K starting pay.

I wouldn't do it for 60K. Maybe 200K, but not 60K.

Remove all airbags, attach 10 inch stainless steel spike aimed at and sitting an inch from the chest or chin to the steering wheel. Now we'll drive carefully.

I think I would use my bicycle before driving like that :)

I partially agree with you.

I fvcking hate speeders. Some people feel safe rocketing along the highway at 90 mph. I don't. So, I'm the one that gets honked at, cursed at, and tailgated. Then, I'm the one that has to slam on my brakes when the jackass passes in a no-passing zone and almost wipes out the oncoming traffic.

Having said that, I don't think large, straight stretches of interstate should be enforced in the same way as rest.
If that many people seriously honk and curse at you, you're actually a much larger hazard than the speeders. The safest speed is the speed of traffic.

Thank you!

Who is more of a hazard? The old man in the big white Buick driving 10MPH under the speed limit in the left lane or the people who are passing him in the center lane? I'm voting for the former.

lol. Ok, so maybe I'm exaggerating. I think I was honked at once while driving the speed limit through a long construction zone (hwy 192 between Melbourne and Orlando). I've been in the car with enough people to know what's said about a driver doing the speed limit.

That's beside the point. I want to do the speed limit. It's not worth a ticket, my life, the life of a pedestrian, or my desire to save 30 seconds on a trip to speed. Sure, I feel like I can speed and still be a safe driver, but I just think there isn't a need.

If all of you are so upset about these "arbitrary and unfair" speed limits, contact your local DPW/DOT official, politician, priest, rabbi, indian healer and voodoo witch doctor and voice your complaint/opinion.

I know everyone here is a badass mofo that smokes pot and drives 100 MPH while drinkin' a 40 and jamming "Fvck the Police"...but show some love for the 70 mph interstate homies.

The biggest reason to not speed is the time thing.....speeding takes VERY little time off a trip, unless it's several hundred miles.

If less people were speeding, less cops would be needed to monitor speeders, and more could focus on serious crime like gangs and violence. Or in low crime areas, less cops would be needed in general and taxes would be lower.

I would give the $1,000 fine to anyone going 5mph or more over the speed limit.

I think people would say speeding is not worth the risk if it meant a minimum $1,000 fine.

people speed ebcause they can get away with it...

Every car should be equipped with GPS and there should be a database with every road and its speed limit. Everyone would be caught if they speed, and issued a ticket.

Every car should have a breathalizer, and not start if the driver has had alcohol.

Porn shouldn't be illegal. Everyone loves it, but some just can't admit it. Unless goatse is supposed to mean having sex with a goat - I don't think I could get into that.

midget Goatse pr0n...regular just isn't enough...

point being, giving more control to the gov't is a slippery slope. Have you ever read 1984? (the movie is crap)

2+2=5 ftw

you should....

I hate that there are many great books that are no longer "required" reading in schools today. 1984 is one such example. It might even change your CCW thread opinion a bit ;)

what they need to do is have reasonable speed limits. The current speed limits were set before ABS, Air bags, Crumple Zones, .08 blood alcohol levels. The nanny state is in full control of our roads.

I understand your idea but think, what is speeding? They can legally pull you over for going 1 MPH over the limit...you'd be pissed if you got pulled over for going 5-10 over, then BAM! $1000

No, I have never been pulled over

The death penalty is enforced in Texas. Are there still murders?

That's different, most people who kill are not sane. They have mental issues. No logical person would kill another person.

However speeders are just ordinary people who have the reasoning to weigh the risk/reward of a situation and would react based on that.

Tell that to our soldiers. Dumbfvck.

Uh no, you're not doing your research. Do you have an idea how much rail systems cost?

And what if I want to go somewhere where no rail exists, like a really small town or somewhere rural? You cannot cover EVERY road with rail, the costs of that would be ENORMOUS.

The cost of new rail per mile is between $200,000 to $1 million.

The cost of new highway per mile is $8 million to $39 million.

The rail system I have in mind is not your conventional 2 rail track with a caboose. The rail would replace every road in the US, including rural.

I beg to differ with your premise. Some people kill other people purely for money. I wouldn't consider that to be a mental issue.

No, it just means people who are going to speed at ALL will go as fast as they want , since 5mph over and 100 over are the same cost.

plus with less police, they will be caught less often, so if cost for going 30 over is $200, and they get caught 1/5th as often why not keep speeding

plus with less police, if 80% of the people speed, like around most cities, the police wont even be able to pull over 5% of the people who are speeding

I shave 30 minutes off my drive by going 7mph over the limit when I goto school. 3.5 hours vs. over 4

The all-rail system I had in SimCity worked great ;)

So, would you patrol streets for speeders, or chase gun toting drug dealers for your ~30K?
You have to add in the overtime and holiday.

Btw, I'm basing it off first hand knowledge of a bro-in-law's salary.

That is an absolutely ridiculous comparison. Murder is a moral issue, speeding is not.

What if you're going 4.9999999999999999999 mph over the speed limit and a gravitational flux comes by and pushes you up to 5mpg over the speed limit? Would you still be fined?

LA is horrendously more expensive cost of living than most of America. It's not comparable to the rest of the country.
