I think we should ban writing checks in stores

Also, I am bitching because it takes time. My time, which I cannot choose to waste. The check writer chooses to waste my time. If they had a line for all the check writers, that would be perfect. Then they could waste each other's time.

I would have a tough time paying with a credit card, seeing as how I don't have one.

Well why don't you have one?

because not everyone needs one.

Most people don't need them.

Crazy talk. Most people DO need them. The modern world revolves around your credit score. Not having a credit card as soon as you can is really irresponsible IMO, unless you live out in a cave somewhere.

Not true at all. There are a lot of people that deal strictly with cash and choose not to use credit cards. My parents are that way and they have no problems getting credit for big purchases (car/house/etc)

It's not the form of payment that is the problem, it's people. I got stuck in line the other day behind a lady trying to pay with a credit card that wouldn't go through. I finally had to go to another line because it wouldn't go through and they were calling the company or something.

I've watched people swipe their debit/credit card 5 or 6 times before the card reader will accept it as well. Most people that I've seen pay by check fill the majority of it out while they are waiting in line and then only have to fill in the amount.

People are stupid. For example, there's always that clown driving around the parking lot looking for a parking space that is right up front. Meanwhile, I drive into the lot, take one of the back spaces, and walk in the door while he's still driving around looking for a "good" spot. Or how about the moron that goes to the "20 items or less" line with a cart full of groceries?

There are far better things to complain about at the store than people writing a check for their groceries.

It can take some time, several minutes with some of you check writers. Who are you to make me wait an extra couple of minutes for no reason what so ever?

I am a paying customer of the store ahead of you in the line. Don't like it? Leave and buy your stuff elsewhere.

It's shelfish is all, and your "I do what I want b/c I'm a paying customer" attitude just makes you look like an asshole.

Then anyone who doesn't have exact change for their purchase, without knowing the total (or calculating it while shopping) is an assho!e. Is that fair? Is it wrong to use a method of payment that is perfectly legal and acceptable by anyone except arrogant pricks?

Again, you waste everyone's time behind you, but we're the arrogant pricks? Keep feeding the shelfish behavior. Perfectly legal and acceptable are two completely different things.

Wow your perspective on life is wacky. You should learn to slow down and not get your panties twisted over tiny issues. If you really feel that your time is being wasted by people who write checks, buy your crap online then. If you don't want to, quit your childish whining about it.

Sigh, again. You're being a prick by wasting everyone elses time, yet I get my panties in a twist? I tell you, you'll never see me in the store start to break out on a rant about check writers. This is an internet forum....where we bitch about things...that are minor...etc. You're extracting the internet to real life? Way to go boss. In the real world, my time is wasted by you pricks all the time. Not just in line at the store. I'll just read the magazine covers or talk on the phone.

Their income can be used for credit. If their income can back up the loan, then it doesn't matter how they buy their coffee in the morning.

A few years ago, I went to the express lane at a grocery store.
Hanging above this express lane was a sign.
You know what that sign said?
"Cash or credit only"
So after waiting for five minutes for the lady in front of me to write a check, when I get to the cashier, I said "Why did you take a check? The sign says cash or credit only."
Do you know what that cashier said?
Do you?
"Checks are the same as credit."
WHY DO YOU HAVE THE SIGN, THEN?!? :|

Yesterday I asked the checker who just got done with a lady who had at least 30-40 items why she let her do that. The reply was "do what?" So I point to the sign that says 10 items or less and the checker says "Oh that, it's just a suggestion."

I was rather dumbfounded by that reply.

You seem so passionate on here that I just assumed that you were the same in real life :) And that doesn't refute my point that if your time is really being wasted, then you should go elsewhere or shop online. 95% of the people aren't wound up so tight that this bothers them. An extra 1 minute won't kill you and if it does, well then you have some real issues to work out.

I get worked up in the morning. ;)

I do purchase most things online, or when I can. I'll gladly trade in 3-5 extra minutes of my life for the convenience of stopping by the store on my way home from work.

This is why I shop at night though. Less crowded and the people writing checks are usually already in bed.

There's a lot of stores that don't take checks. Most are food places. But I agree. If you have a checking account, you should have a Check Card. Checks are just for old people and for mailing in payments to places if you don't have online banking. But there are so many banks that have free check cards, free online banking and bill payment, etc, there's really no excuse any more. They should make all the people that use checks go in one line and they can piss off each other.

What happens if you lose your check card?

This is an honest question. I don't have a check card or a debit card. I assume if your check card is lost or stolen the charges would not be disputable as the funds have already been withdrawn?

Is this a correct assumption?

QFT have you not seen the Visa check card commercials that are on every 5 minutes.

"If your Visa check card is lost or stolen you aren't liable for fraudulent charges, and all that money gets put back in your bank account."

That doesn't mean it is an easy process.

You're correct. Most likely though, you'll notice or be informed the day of. If someone gets your account info or starts writing checks in your name...it won't be found for a few days. At that point, the process would be just as long just started a few days later.

I'm going to continue writing checks for groceries, and now I'm going to make sure I write them more slowly than ever. Thanks for the motivation to piss people off, OP!

That's life. :)

Bull. Farking. Shyt.

I had a check card stolen a number of years ago. I didn't realize it until after some wanker had already cleaned out my account. Too bad I had written checks for my farking mortgage and other bills that had bounced. It took me weeks to convince the bank that those charges weren't mine, and then they still tried to tell me that I had to pay the overdraft fees because they overdrafts due to MY spending, not the person who stole from me. I ended up getting the money back that wasn't my spending, but I had to eat several expensive overdrafts.

Fark check cards, I will never use one again.

ROFL! People who think that writing checks takes too long need to just slow down and get over themselves. It sounds like: "I'm too important, and my time it too valuable to wait a few extra minutes while you write a check!" Someone been watching too many of those Visa commercials where everything is a smoothly running machine...until some miscreant stops things to pay cash or write a check....then, OMG...

and it also sounds like youre just an impatient, spoiled rich kid that has never had to deal with real life issues like "cant get a credit card" or things like that. some people use checks so they can track their money, and dont have the credit for a card. banks dont just give those away, you have to apply and get approved. mebbe you should have a bit more patience with other peoples lives and just deal with it.

i have written checks for stuff, including groceries. but, when i did that, i had the check all filled out except for the amount and it really didnt take any more time than using my card. times ive used a check instead of my card were when i was having a bad money week and needed to gain a couple days of time before i had to actually pay for the groceries, but still needed to feed my kids. that 4 day lag can be a blessing sometimes. now i only pay my frys elec card and my mortgage with checks, and thats only because they dont offer online pay without it being a scheduled payment. i dont like that.

oh, im also an infinitely patient person. ive been told that by many people, despite me always thinking i was very impatient.
