you may be looking at a "generational" issue, and a self-governing issue.

Yes. I don't know anyone from my parents generation or younger who still write checks at the grocery store. OTOH, the only people I see who still do it are little old ladies. :D

I think there are more important things in life than worrying about someone that spends an extra 30 seconds writing a check in the grocery store line.

If you don't like it; shop the grocery store during off-peak hours.

On another note; it seems like your Safeway is back in "1990". Alot of the grocery stores around here will take your check, slip it through their machine, and pre-fill the check for you. All that is required is for you to sign it.
Yeah.. I know.. 10 more seconds of your precious f )(*^*()*& time.. whipdee freakin doo...

You're probably the type that will ride someone's @$$ on the highway; even when that person is doing over the speed limit, and you'll still start throwing your hands up in the air.. puffing your little chest out.. huffing & puffing and start acting like a raging lunatic because that person isn't going fast enough to suit you..

Grow up

It can take some time, several minutes with some of you check writers. Who are you to make me wait an extra couple of minutes for no reason what so ever?

I am a paying customer of the store ahead of you in the line. Don't like it? Leave and buy your stuff elsewhere.

If you're in such a hurry, order your groceries online then.

I still write checks so that i can keep track of certain payments. yes i use online payments, but why should i have to pay a fee to have money electronically transferred from my bank to another bank. Writing checks forces you to slow down and consider purchases, instead of just swiping a card. And right with that, I get real mad when a cashier doesn't read my card when the back of it says "ask for ID".

one person commented "writing a check for $15? come on". My view is "using a debit for $3??? come on". yet i have seen that happen many times, usually by young kids. Sorry but i don't think this is good education on managing money.

If you can't wait in line a few minutes, get organized and have your food delivered on a monthly basis, so that you don't have to waste you time standing in line. lol sorry but hopefully you'll find something in life that matters.

aka a tool to counterbalance life's shortcomings. Mismanagement of funds, no self control on impulse purchases, managing a fear of identity theft. With the last one making just about no sense what-so-ever (as it pertains to writing a check vs using a card), what ever floats your boat and gets you through the day, have at it.

It's shelfish is all, and your "I do what I want b/c I'm a paying customer" attitude just makes you look like an asshole.

Im not in a hurry most of the time at the store, I usually waste time at the store. I just don't waste other people's time is all.

It's an internet forum, I don't have to waste your time, you're already doing that for yourself.

worse are gift checks. it happens with baby stuff sometimes, i guess they send in upc's for cheque rewards. i saw this one time and they used a half dozen of the damn things to pay for their stuff, each going through the entire process of check purchase:(

Apparently there are people who do that.... And it's just a PITA cuz you have to check ID and write all that info down too.

I'm almost going to say we should ban cash but I guess a lot of people still use that. Plus, you need to be 18 to have a CC.

But if you need a CC to buy off of Amazon, you should seriously need a CC to buy from Safeway. There should be credit only lines or something. Seriously. 30 seconds tops after your crap is scanned and bagged.

And the story goes on because I went to a gas station right afterwards (to clean my tree sap) and I noticed a girl asking for $10 on a certain pump.

I've NEVER paid for gas in cash in my life. I think I remember as a kid when my parents did, but even when I learned to drive, my parents gave me one of their CCs to use for gas.

Credit cards/debit cards are the way to go.

aww...rich spoiled kid can't wait a few minutes.

anyone call the waaaaahmbulance yet?

also, what does buying off of Amazon, an INTERNET company have to do with being physically at a B&M store?? the only way to order from amazon is with a credit card...i don't understand your logic there.

You impatient little fckers give me great amusement. You probably also stalk people in parking lots for their spot and think they pack the groceries in their car too slow. When I see folks like that I'll intentionally slow down. I will not be "intimidated" into speeding up for their convenience.

Then anyone who doesn't have exact change for their purchase, without knowing the total (or calculating it while shopping) is an assho!e. Is that fair? Is it wrong to use a method of payment that is perfectly legal and acceptable by anyone except arrogant pricks?

Again, you waste everyone's time behind you, but we're the arrogant pricks? Keep feeding the shelfish behavior. Perfectly legal and acceptable are two completely different things.

My wife still uses checks at the grocery store.....however they have a check processing machine, all you need to do is sign the check, which she does while the clerk is ringing her up....then hand the clerk the check....they have a machine the check goes thru..it imprints the pay to line, the amount and the date..... takes less time than swiping your ATM or CC and having to key in all the info and pressing "accept" 15 times :)

I use checks @ the grocery store, but only for baby formula (the coupons need to processed as checks).

OP, you're watching too many of those VISA commercials. When you're old and dieing you're not going to remember those 10 mins you wasted as the grocery store. Next time something like this happens and you only have a few items, just go to the customer courtesy desk, you can get rung up there.

Or having to redo all that junk because the clerk forgot to press some key on the register while you were busy swiping the card and punching in the PIN. Debit cards are not always as swift and trouble free as that silly TV ad makes them out to be.

You know what I hate? People that use credit cards. They always slow me down with their crap about having to sign. I use a debit card, I just have to enter 4 numbers and take my receipt. But those damn signers keep slowing me down!

You don't have to write anything down if people put their info on their checks.

You can if your parents allow it (they have to co-sign).

Oh yeah, NO ONE can run that damn EFT machine! Either the thing is poorly designed or they're all just a bunch of morons, but I think it's the latter ;)

The only times I mess up when using those machines is because every damn store on earth has a different version that requires different buttons to press. The main issue comes if I want to use my debit card as a credit card. Some people have you press CREDIT, some have you press CANCEL, some have you press NO. One time I canceled the entire thing and had to reswipe because I did the routine for a different machine.

Just more whining from the most narcissistic generation of Americans to have ever graced the planet. Congratulations, you have officially beaten the baby boomer generation as the most completely self absorbed generation in history.

No, we live in a world where speed-up is necessary. Everything in life goes ahead full steam. We want faster internet so we can rent movies online and save the trip to the store. That requires multiple speed ups in the viewer processing power (old 286 can't do that), internet bandwidth and provides a lower span between decision time and beginning to watch. We like things to be quick... we don't like unnecessary acts. A lot of people see things such as check writing to be unnecessary.

I've used my bank card for $1. I prefer to use cash where cash is NECESSARY TO BE USED. Like getting lunch at work, I have to use cash. Going to a place that doesn't accept credit, I have to use cash. Since I prefer to keep my cash limited, I don't just use it all willy nilly. Also, cash is weird, because I'll take out an abstract amount.. where credit/debit only removes as much as I spend.

It's this attitude that pisses me off in stores. The idea that it doesn't matter what you do to others as long as you are not inconvenienced. You're probably the type of person that hogs the entire aisle in stores so no one else can get through, but as long as you can peruse the wide selection of gourmet Wal-Mart® Great Value?, we should have to suffer, because you are a paying customer. You should always respect other people just as they should respect you.

Strange, I've never had a problem and it's always been the fastest method for me.

I don't get mad at check writers, I just don't understand most of the time. My credit card is WAY faster to use and it actually pays me whenever I use it - so why would you pay with a check?

I would have a tough time paying with a credit card, seeing as how I don't have one.

If you bother to be considerate and fill it in ahead of time - checks take a very short time to pay. Call me crazy but I aways keep 3 types of payment with me: Cash, Checks and Credit. I use cash for most things during the week - gas, food, hanging out with friends. (I love at the end of the night at the bar and 6 people hand the waitress credit cards - I put down my cash and can leave before then even get a chance to fight over the single pen to sign with) I have a hard time using credit cards on groceries and gas since I have a hard time leveraging consumables. I don't like paying for food I ate 20 days ago.

My bigger complaint is those people who use the 12 items or less lines for 20+ items.
My solution: Exponential tax on items over the limit. First 3 over are free, 4th is an extra $.05, 5th is $.25, 6th is $.50 and so on
