I saw a guy cheating in an important test. Should I have told on him?

Barfo

Lifer
So I'll start this year with a new and better job and yesterday I went there to finalize and sign my contract.

While I was in the waiting room I saw a guy taking some written test. I guess he was applying for an internship as he looked very young and the test had some very basic networking questions.

So this guy is googling the answers in his phone, there was nobody in there except for me and a secretary who wasn't paying attention. I was wondering if I should have told someone about the cheating, but being new there I thought it would be better to pretend I didn't see it.

Did I do wrong?

Meh, no, everyone lies. IRL if you don't know the answer you just google it anyway... As long as you get the answer in the time allowed I don't see the problem.

nope. this isn't high school.. it's the real world.

in the real world... if you don't know an answer... you fucking google it.

that guy is better suited for the job than you would be.

How do you know it was a test? Maybe, he was filling out an application and grabbing contact information off his smartphone.

If he fails to perform the job adaquately, will people die/get maimed?

If yes, tattle.
If no, keep quiet and blackmail him.

because he knows how to research.. while your first thought is tattletale.

you're the guy in the office noone likes.
I'm not sure how him signing his contract for employment makes him less apt at his job then some guy googling something. I fail to see the connection here.

most companies like self starters... people who can do the work without alot of hand holding.

if you are asked on an interview.. "if you dont know the answer, what do you do" ... and your FIRST response is 'ask my co-workers' ... you wont get hired... it shows you need alot of hand holding.

someone who runs to co-workers to tattletale that jimmy is googling an answer, seems like someone who needs alot of handholding.

i bet if he ran to tattletale, his contract would be 'reconsidered'

and before you say "i doubt it" ... most employment contracts include wording that now says "the Company is free to conclude its employment relationship with you at any time, with or without cause, and with or without advance notice."

Maybe it was a test for you. They bring you into "finalize" some contracts. Sit you in a room with some random dude. Have him do some obvious cheating as the secretary is distracted and see what sort of way you respond.

Would be an excellent way to see what kind of person they are going to be working with .. and to be honest, they probably aren't displeased to find out you aren't a tattletale.

In many businesses, the ability to keep your mouth shut and look the other way is very highly regarded.

lulz, I was well liked at my past job. I was just thinking that it'll be a waste of time and money for the company if this guy is hired and is not up to the task.

Well the test had questions such as "what is an ip number?" and "how do you add a printer to the network?"

I google stuff I don't know too but if this guy can't answer such simple questions without googling the answers then perhaps he's not qualified for it.

Yea if your company is a shithole.

Fuck working like that, I'd go nuts.

On topic there is a reason that people want you to know these things. If they wanted a monkey that could use google then they would hire a monkey that uses google.

go ahead smart guy..

what is an ip number?

and how do you add a printer to the network? (and no... plugging in the network cable is NOT the right answer)
