I saw a guy cheating in an important test. Should I have told on him?

lulz, I was well liked at my past job. I was just thinking that it'll be a waste of time and money for the company if this guy is hired and is not up to the task.

Well the test had questions such as "what is an ip number?" and "how do you add a printer to the network?"

I google stuff I don't know too but if this guy can't answer such simple questions without googling the answers then perhaps he's not qualified for it.

That's for HR to decide, not you. If their process isn't capable of weeding out the worthless folk then they'll change their process. There may be technical questions in the interview where the guy will be fucked, you don't know.

In other words, mind your own damned business and let these people do their jobs.

if the test were absolutely crucial to being hired and the company in no way took measures to prevent googling on a smartphone, then that speaks more about the company than you or the kid.

the ones who are hated the most always think they are 'well liked' ... except they never attend any of the unofficial parties, where everyone badmouths you...

most companies like self starters... people who can do the work without alot of hand holding.

if you are asked on an interview.. "if you dont know the answer, what do you do" ... and your FIRST response is 'ask my co-workers' ... you wont get hired... it shows you need alot of hand holding.

someone who runs to co-workers to tattletale that jimmy is googling an answer, seems like someone who needs alot of handholding.

i bet if he ran to tattletale, his contract would be 'reconsidered'

and before you say "i doubt it" ... most employment contracts include wording that now says "the Company is free to conclude its employment relationship with you at any time, with or without cause, and with or without advance notice."
Again I don't see how being a potential "tattletale" is connected to not being self sufficent.

go ahead smart guy..

what is an ip number?

and how do you add a printer to the network? (and no... plugging in the network cable is NOT the right answer)
Answering that here wouldn't prove anything as I can easily google it :p

Plus I wasn't given a written test, I was interviewed and answered my questions verbally.

tattletalers feel a need to be emotionally reinforced by others...

tattletailing is another form of emotional reinforcement... they CRAVE the praise heaped on them by turning in someone else...

they can't live... can't operate... unless they're being told "good job" every few seconds... and most likely ... cause drama just to be able to tell on someone.

the OP's first instinct was to tattletale... then to run to the internet to get emotional reinforcement from a bunch of strangers for his decision.

BIG red flag.

so.. you dont know....

chances are you were given the same test... guessed on the answer... and now you're afraid they'll see this guy knows more than you do... and give him a higher offer.

nope. this isn't high school.. it's the real world.

in the real world... if you don't know an answer... you fucking google it.

that guy is better suited for the job than you would be.

No. Google can't do your job for you. Google is a useful tool, but it is no substitute for knowledge.

We had a DBA at my last company who apparently cheated on a test to get the job. He lasted about two weeks. There are jobs where it is absolutely critical to have competent people working for you, and networking is one of them.

lol! were you fapping in your cubicle and someone told on you?

I've never told on anyone, ever. Just pondering if I did the right thing.

agreed... but.. if you wanna use an EXAM as proof of knowledge...

just hire an engineer with the following letters after their name:

if you're a cisco shop.... cisco gives a better exam than you could..

Eh, I think you just don't like the OP. In regards to tattletell'ing sometimes people just feel like being a dick.

IP number: IP stands for intellectual property. Each computer has a special number assigned so that any content created on it can be traced back to the computer (backtracing). This helps protect authors from Swedish religious extremists.

Sigh..I have my CCNA, and then I stopped doing network admin duties 6 months later. I miss that job, too bad the employer sucked a fat one.

So intent on proving me wrong, seems to me you have a chip on your shoulder ;)

I didn't get the same test as my position has nothing to do with networking, hell, I doubt I'll ever see the guy again.

So I'll start this year with a new and better job and yesterday I went there to finalize and sign my contract.

While I was in the waiting room I saw a guy taking some written test. I guess he was applying for an internship as he looked very young and the test had some very basic networking questions.

So this guy is googling the answers in his phone, there was nobody in there except for me and a secretary who wasn't paying attention. I was wondering if I should have told someone about the cheating, but being new there I thought it would be better to pretend I didn't see it.

Did I do wrong?

Kind of a moot point now isn't it?

Mind your business. If I was a hiring manager and you came up and told me that, I'd get rid of you because I wanted to, and him because I then felt like I had to.

and you're second guessing your decision.

wishy-washy.

i wouldn't want you on my team.
Last I heard you were doing some low tier tech support, amirite?
A company with a top spot in Fortune's 100 best companies to work for wants me on their team, I can live with that.

To answer your question, I wouldn't bother. If he can't answer the questions without cheating on the test in the lobby then he's not going to know how to answer them in the interview either.

Not my problem.
