Why should religion get some sort of weird pass? Is it supposed to be beyond comment? It's something that we have to politely ignore even when it's shitting on the carpet?

NO, it shouldn't.

faith is interesting, though, and I think that is what people like NGT understand: belief/faith is so uniquely strange and profound in the animal kingdom, that it is worth investigating, and certainly appreciating.

Religion is, well has become...more or less a shitstorm of its own design. It is everything that our yankee bible thumpers hate about the "ebil gubmint" (infallible, omnipotent power over peons), yet they somehow suck at its teat on a daily basis as if to claim it is the only omnipotent power saving them from the omnipotent power that they claim to hate.

Funny, that.

If it's not the word of god why are you...

It helps me to give up pleasure to benefit others if I believe that Christ is the beneficiary.

It was on this point where CT pointed out my limited thinking 4years and 11moths ago:

Cerpin Taxt said:
you are attempting to shoehorn secondary religious tenets into a very clear-cut and complete qualification.

Jesus's clearcut and complet qualification was:
" For I was hungry and you gave me nothing to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me nothing to drink, I was a stranger and you did not invite me in, I needed clothes and you did not clothe me, I was sick and in prison and you did not look after me.’

“They also will answer, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or needing clothes or sick or in prison, and did not help you?’

“He will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did not do for one of the least of these, you did not do for me.’"
Link

To this I found myself re-making the argument "With God all things are possible"

... and finding it a wanting ego defense. So I and other me now agree with CT.

yet they somehow suck at its teat on a daily basis as if to claim it is the only omnipotent power saving them from the omnipotent power that they claim to hate.
Good joke, but an un-refined understanding of the religious ethos of the protestant bible belt.

You'll find their polities involve the congregationalist (libertarian) systems of control that Rs argue for.

This thread reminds me of:
http://www.gotquestions.org/narrow-path.html

Half of you are just weaklings stuck behind a keyboard eating fast food and becoming obese. Which is why I'll not only always be physically stronger than 99% of you, but also walk the narrow spiritual path unlike most of you as well. For if you don't even have faith in yourself to better yourself, you sure as hell aren't going to have faith in a higher power to bless you and look after you. Just the way society has become, everyone scared of their neighbor and scared to love each other like Jesus said. I don't fault any of you for not believing anymore, it's what the sheeple have programmed you to believe. The narrow path is designed that way for a reason. Carry on.

'Cause why?
Cause ask and ye shall receive. Your worship of modern man as god will prevent almost all of you from putting your ego on the shelf and having faith, let alone asking Christ for anything. You weren't meant to walk the narrow path, just accept it and move on and continue to mock us Christians who do. I will only pray for you sad atheist saps who will eventually succumb to diabetes sitting behind a keyboard and THEN go to hell. Double whammy if I ever saw one. I'm here to be an inspiration so you don't die of the beetus as well as take the wide road of sin, just like most of the other lemmings in society. The Bible predicted this would happen.

Dixy, no I'm just an asshole. God is helping me in the humility and loving thy neighbor department. :p

You still haven't answered the question. Why is the path narrow?

Judging from their ranting about others being overweight and having diabetes, I would guess that the path is narrow to keep fat people off of it. :awe:

Maybe. According to scripture, it is easier for a fat man with diabetes to pass through the eye of a needle than to enter the kingdom of heaven. So you gots to be really, really skinny.

Ah, there is the mighty moral high horse we come to expect of typical Christians. Nevermind though, that before Christianity even existed, civilizations have always developed moral teachings. Plato, Aristotle, Socrates, Confucius, Buddha, and many others have taught moral philosophy long before the invention of Christ. Christians act like they invented the Golden Rule.

Sorry, folks. It is all plagiarized. There is nothing new under the sun. You would have to be willfully ignorant of world history to think it all comes from one source.

Looks like this discussion took an interesting turn.

Also some historical thinking on Jesus is not that he was this lone messiah, but that he was just one individual from a whole family full of preachers.

Also a very important question and thought I have had for some time now.

Jesus says he is the son of god. Did he ever say you are not the son of god?
