Lol but isn’t this the reason for longer test trial periods. One would hope the drug companies would act responsible. But capital to produce the vaccine is covered. Bet in their contract with the administration they won’t be liable for dangerous side effects. So I do see them rushing it out to appease Trumpity Dumpity.
My overall point is that people need to be vigilant and VOTE! Just because the polls say Joe is ahead by a decent margin means nothing...prizes are awarded after the votes are counted. I hope no one is blase about it this time around (if that's their inclination).

In all fairness for such a rush attempt as this so long as they are acting in good faith they should not be liable for nasty side effects.
I don't think there's much blase out there. No bitter Bernie Bro bullshit, either. Lots of people who didn't like it in 2016 like this even less, and for good reason.

Phase 3 trials that I've seen are testing on 30,000 patients. If anything, these vaccines (if approved) will be definitively safe; the question is will they be effective?

Good faith is one thing, due diligence another. Seriously, vaccines usually take 4+ years to develop, responsibly test and come online. This is ridiculous.

It's a trade-off. We are sacrificing some safety and possibly our certainty of efficacy for a chance to end or severely curtail COVID soon instead of in 4 years. This is a serious benefit. We aren't only talking about loss of life here, which would be at least in low millions after 4 years. I just saw a journalist on Maddow tonight who persuasively argued that there is no reasonably safe way to open schools until the virus is largely contained. We can't afford either the loss of life or to indefinitely shut down commerce and education.
We have to take the chance.

Notice how Trump has changed his tune in the last few days? Trying to act like he supports wearing a mask and admitting the virus is not only real but also a serious threat as well. So..... what happened? Why the change? Even his canceling of the Republican convention due to the risks from the virus? Again, what’s up? Seriously? Because this change of heart is soooo not Trump. Never before during his tenure as president has Donald Trump ever came to his senses or thought about anyone else besides Donald Trump. So, I think I know what’s up with Donald Trump. I think Trump figures if he accepts the virus, or pretends to, and goes as far to allowing the virus to cancel the Republican convention then maybe just maybe the virus will be so bad come November that Donald Trump can justify postponing the entire 2020 election. Indefinitely. Trump can put on his sad face, his concerned face, his faked human face and claim by postponing the election he is saving lives. He can say I CARE FOR YOU SO MUCH THAT I CAN NOT ALLOW YOU TO RISK YOUR LIFE BY VOTING IN PUBLIC. Trump with say this while also tossing a wrench into the by mail voting option. Donald Trump can not get away with postponing the election indefinitely without first the elimination of the by mail voting option. And we already know how Trump will stop the by mail voting, Trump will call it rigged, corrupt, and unlawful. So if people can not vote by mail and can not vote in person then what Donald Trump has succeeded at is an indefinite postponement of the 2020 election and thus a continued Donald Trump presidency. Continued indefinitely. And that will be that because after all, what are Democrats going to do? Impeach Trump again?

I don't think it's a conspiracy to stop people from voting -- it's because the polls are swinging too far in Biden's direction for Trump to continue on his "pretend the virus isn't a threat" path. He's at risk of losing all the battleground states, and maybe even one or two normally safe Republican states.
With Trump, a lot of things boil down to a narcissist Occam's Razor: if he does something, it's because it'll stroke his ego. Winning a second term definitely qualifies.

I'm not arguing we should take the safe and sane 4 year road here, not at all. What I will say is that rushing to start sticking people BEFORE THE ELECTION strikes me as Trump wanting to get elected, not Trump wanting to save lives. Don't know what lies ahead. But for sure this is (so far) the epidemic of our lifetimes and IMO (so far) the election of our lifetimes. We've already blown the first wave (except in the NE), we blew 2016, we better right the ship in November and kick the asshole out of the White House.

That timeline includes long gaps between trials, looking for funding, scaling up manufacturing, etc. All avoidable delays with the liberal application of cash. I haven't seen anything that gives me safety concerns so far.

In this case it is not a "change of heart" at all. He has no heart. It's obviously his campaign staff (maybe along with behind the scenes pressure by right wingers who are nervous of political defeats) for him to change course. Notice the first "task force" podium event this week was just him. I didn't see anyone but him talking in the next. And he wasn't talking off the cuff as he likes to do. He was READING FROM PREPARED STATEMENTS ON PAPER IN FRONT OF HIM. So, he can read aloud off of printed paper. Is that efficacy? Is that competence. No, and the expressions on his face mirror the irony of that. He knows he's incompetent, he just will never begin to admit it out loud. He holds onto his internal dialog being that he's some kind of genius, "stable genius," as he put it because he'd heard that a lot of people consider him unstable and he knows people don't want an unstable person as president.
He's just reading prepared statements. You can always tell when he's doing that. He's incapable of extemporizing good English. I don't think he can WRITE good English to save his ass. His tweets are ample proof. His campaign staff are certainly afraid he will put his foot in his mouth and they are determined to stop that. They will fail at that. He just can't help himself sometimes, we've seen that again and again and again ... and we will see it again... and again going forward until we are fortunate enough to have him in the rear view mirror.

Little would sooth my soul more than seeing Biden's polling advantages continue to increase right up to and through the election. I would really enjoy seeing Trump implode. Seeing him get increasingly desperate until the end might actually be entertaining.

Not a fan of how he's mix and matching state polls from different pollsters to make an argument. The press to some degree wants a closer race because that's good for business. There is little interest in talking about a possible blowout which looks more and more to be a possibility at least as likely as a slim Trump victory.
