I completely disagree with your statement. Respect for the elderly was not mere cultural convention without any foundations. It in fact was rooted in the fact that wisdom came from the elderly. The young depended upon them to pass on knowledge, arbitrate or mediate problems and issues; and we sought advices from them.

Things have changed with the advent of technology, though. We no longer depend upon the elderly for basic knowledge, proverbs, acquired skills, useful tools, etc. As a result, elderly people themselves have no wisdom to offer to the young, for they obtained none themselves.

I'm sorry, but the reasons why I should 'respect' the elderly (so often the most racist, sexist, homophobic among us) for no other reason than their age are not self-evident to me. Feel free to provide an explanation.

I see where you're coming from. I used to think highly of the elderly (i.e., with age came wisdom), but then realized how just as confused (i.e., still trying to find or never found themselves), immature, unrepentant or dissolute some were. However, I refuse to disrespect them unless they give me reasons to.

I was standing in line to pick up my take out order from Denny's. There was a girl and a few old ladies ahead of me. The girl was getting mad because her take out order wasnt ready (the girl working was bagging up 3 of them all at once). The lady working the register told her it would be a second and said she would ring up the old ladies who had already ate. The girl that was waiting started flipping out cussing out the girl working the register. The girl did the right thing and rang up the grumpy one. Then one of the old ladies (they were at least 85) asked one of the other old ladies what was going on. The grumpy girl then started cussing out the old ladies. And I mean swearing up a storm.

The ladies looked like they were about to have a heart attack so I spoke up. I yelled at the grumpy chick. "you need to show some respect to the elderly!" The grumpy chick then started swearing at me telling me that the ladies were yelling at her. I told her that they hadn't said a word to her and that she needed to leave them alone. She said a few choice words to me and I got in her face. I told her to quiet down and watch her language. She cussed at me a few more times then I said. "Look, those ladies didnt say a word to you. I am though. If you want to yell at someone, yell at me. But you are just making yourself look stupid." Then she shut up and turned around. By this time everyone in the whole place had quieted down and was staring at me. Even the people working in the kitchen came out to watch. The grumpy chick got her food and left, staring at the floor the entire time. I apoligized to everyone for making a scene. As I was leaving 3 different people stopped me and told me I did the right thing. I really think the grumpy chick was either coked out or a crackhead...but she was way out of line.

Cliff notes:
read the thread

Should have knocked her out.

It's not a cultural convention "without foundation". It is a cultural convention, tho. As opposed to something we are driven to do by virtue of the fact we are animals (like breathing).

I agree that the eldery have no wisdom to offer the young, more often than not.

I don't think respect is something that should be assumed or taken for granted. It's something that needs to be earned.

Because they raised arrogant, impudent, whiny self-serving little bitches like you and somehow managed to refrain from choking you to death.

Now either shut up or go cut me a switch.

You definately did the right thing. That girl needed to learn a lesson and you gave told her. There really is no need for foul language in public. Respect for elderly has diminished to an all time low.

because its only $3 and its right next to my work.

I lost it because she was picking on the weak, not necessarily the elderly. You can definately tell the 14 year olds posting in this thread.

Oh, sure, but what if there had been TWO grumpy chicks? Would you have been so brave? ;)

It's a 'Dad' complex. I have one too.

I was walking with my mother-in-law and wife after seeing a movie and these two young boys 15 or so were yelling and swearing about something. I told them in 'father-mode' to quiet down and watch their language in front of women and children.

I think it's VERY important to:
1) Demonstrate correct behavior
2) Accept social responsibility for the actions of others and correct it when it is incorrect.

I guess you are right. This is the first time I have ever really done something like this in public, buy I am always offering my advice to the guys that work for me. I guess I really am getting old.

I think the point of aidanjm is not that you should not have defended the two old ladies, but more that it should not have mattered that they were old.
The grumpy bltch was clearly in the wrong, and what you did was so very right, but being old shouldn't necessarily be an automatic road to reverence.

She probably looked at you funny because she couldn't believe someone who ever went to Denny's would come back. :D
