How did beer get so popular? It isn't even very good.

If you look at the history beer was like water few hundred years ago. Keeping water germ/bacteria free was very hard, so many people just drank beer (including children)....especially on long voyages across oceans(pilgrims for example).

I don't like beer either, I have a huge sweet tooth though...

Can only drink white wine, something about red gives me huge headaches (after 1 drink).
Jack & Coke
Irish Rootbeet
Crown & Seven
etc etc

Never have been much of a beer drinker, but that's okay.

The reason it is so popular now is because great beer is actually easy to find now, unlike 5-10 years ago. Those great beers are not watery or bland, and while some are bitter, they are likely intended to be bitter.

I know he's a troll, but I have to agree with his point. Beer tastes like absolute shit. I went to Belgium and tried a hundred different beers, I've tried plenty of craft beers here in the states. They all taste like shit.

My friend owns a little co-op brewery and is always getting me to try new beers in the hopes that one day one of them won't taste like piss. They always do.

I really don't understand the comparison to piss. Are you guys putting salt in your beer?

And, if you think all beer tastes like shit, it is because you either consumed paint chips as a child or ate pizza so hot it permanently burned off your taste buds.

A nice caramel and chocolate stout is something to be celebrated. I suppose this is what happens when we are raised by soda. If it doesn't contain 50 grams of sugar per ounce, it is "too bitter"... Bunch of babies.

I wonder if they've tried drinking piss.

I'm not a fan of cheaper beers. I'd rather just drink water. Not soft drinks, but just water. Or maybe juice. Or else a nice wine. However I do like many higher end beers, because they taste much, much better than cheap beers.

While I do like certain stouts, I can't sit on a hot afternoon in the summer and drink stout. Too heavy for me. I prefer it with a meal, and just one.

OTOH, I like for example wheat beers for just casual drinking. Lately, I've been buying Blanche de Chambly. Here is one review. (I couldn't check other reviews because it turns out most beer sites are blocked at work. :p) My wife is usually a wine drinker, and usually doesn't like beer, but she likes this one.

Unfortunately, it's rather expensive. Locally in Canada it's $13.25 per six-pack (for a total volume of 2.05 litres).

And no, I don't drink to get drunk. In fact, personally I don't like the feeling of being drunk.

There's all sorts of beers to suit every taste. I personally am a lambic man: extremely sweet, fruit flavored, and very high alcohol content. There have also been some other fruit flavored beers which have been very nice as well: I remember a blueberry ale and a grapefruit beer which were both just excellent.

... because the goal isn't to get shit faced in 5 minutes?

Yup. It's sad. I actually dumped out half a beer the other night. I've got a terrible cold that has effectively nuked my taste and smelling ability. I opened up one of the hoppiest beers I had (over 100 IBU's) and I could smell nothing. Not a thing. It was like drinking cold, slightly carbonated water. I got through half the bottle not enjoying it in the least and dumped it out. I haven't had a beer in a week because of this stupid cold.

It's not about getting shitfaced. Some people do actually appreciate the smell an flavors. Once I get my senses recovered I've got an awesome dark belgian ale waiting for me.

Speaking of fruit beers, I just had a Wells and Young's Banana Bread beer the other day, from the UK. To my surprise I liked it a fair bit, despite the fact I'm not huge fan of fruit beers, and the reviews have been mixed.

BTW, what I do now for parties is I go and get many types of craft beers, for myself and other guests, including ones I've never tried before. Although they're more expensive, It doesn't usually cost me that much though since most of my guests usually drink wine anyway.

I don't like beer myself (never got on with the taste), but its silly to suggest that the only reason to drink is to get drunk as quickly as possible. Its supposed to be a shared, social activity unless you have a serious problem.

Plus, apparently, a great many people _do_ like the taste of beer and get as fussy about the multitude of varieties and flavours of t as some people do with wine.

Personally I prefer the taste of wine...I find for me spirits tend to get consumed too quickly given the cost of the stuff.

I don't love either beer or wine, but both are great compliments to various types of food.

If I'm drinking just to drink, 99% of the time its going to be liquor.

Beer is amazing. I used to binge on busch light and high life, but nowadays I only buy good beers that I have never tried before.

It's amazing getting the same buzz from 6 good IPA's that you do from 10 crappy pilsners.

Founders Centennial IPA is the best beer on earth.

Founders is good, I have a particular fondness for just about anything brewed by Southern Tier.
