How did beer get so popular? It isn't even very good.

But it's popular because it's easy to make, pretty cheap, and its usually weak enough to have several drinks throughout the evening and not get too fucked up.

Higher alcohol content is NOT what most people are after when drinking, maybe true for alcoholics and teens, less so for people who just like to relax with some friends and have a few drinks.

herb ale was made by sumerians

also what ale and wine were back then is not what it is today.

lots of herbs and spices and other plants went into alcohol.

not necessarily getting drunk. but you want to be able to feel something. Otherwise what's the point of drinking alcohol?

I actually like the taste of cold beer. Everything else, including wine now, just tastes like ass and is a means to an end (i.e. drunkenness). I liked wine for a while, now it's "down there" with all hard liquors I've tried except rum.

I've brewed and drank commercial Imperials and barleywines that came in at 14% or so.

Beer is easy to drink over a longer period of time when socializing. You don't want to show up at a venue, become drunk instantly and then spend the rest of the time either getting piss drunk or sobering up.

Do yourselves a favor and go get some good beers, the cost is worthwhile for that cold, hoppy, sometimes bittery taste.
