How did beer get so popular? It isn't even very good.

i had a craft stout that tasted a bit like chocolate. it was interesting.

youngs-double-chocolate-stout.jpg

That would be something like this. It is one of my favorite sipping beers. I don't usually drink more than 1 at a time.

It has a chocolaty taste that has very little bitter taste to it. Very good overall.

The thing is, when I first tried my first beer, I thought it was nasty shit. It was way too bitter and I didn't like bitter things. I still don't like very bitter beers and tend to stay away from IPA's since they are very bitter. Beers like Bud Light are basically very lightly bitter water drinks. There isn't much flavor to them and all you get is some basic bitter taste. Of which I used to think it was strong bitter taste, but now it's not even noticeable to me.

This is why people say beer is an acquired taste. All beer has a bitter taste to it. Some is much more bitter than others. Bitter isn't that normal of a taste to get in food growing up as a child and tends to be a very strong taste with reaction. It takes awhile to get used to and even to like it. Some people never will.

I will say it didn't take me long to acquire the taste for beer. When you drink enough of it, the taste response to something bitter becomes less sharp and pronounced. A beer drinker eventually stops noticing the strong reaction to the bitter, and instead notices the blend of other flavors with the bitter taste. When a beer drinker stops having that strong reaction to bitter taste, they start appreciating better beers that blend various flavors.

I will say, that most people that don't like beer tend to not like coffee as well. Especially black coffee. Pure black coffee is pretty bitter as well in taste.

I wouldn't say all beer has a bitter taste. Belgian varieties that are heavy on the malt and use a yeast that is on the fruitier side give you a brew that is much more rich, sweet, and "bready", than most other types.

I don't trust people that don't like beer. They smell like cabbage and have small hands.

I love delicious beer. I dislike mediocre beers or less.

I drink it because it tastes interesting, delicious, awesome, and oftentimes bitter :)

Essentially, I have decided that I am a stout guy.
I love an IPA, APA, Quad Ale, Tripel Ale, Hefeweizen, Doubel Ale, Golden Ale, Strong Ale, ESP, or pretty much any Ale, but, my heart, my heart is with stouts.

What is interesting to me, is that I do not find any whiskey to be palatable at all. Bourbon makes me gag. But, barrel aged stouts are magical. They bring a little bit of the essence of the woody/good taste from the bourbon, combined with the magical deliciousness of a proper hearty stout.

They are a marriage of flavor so delicious, that it is inconceivable to me how any living creature could ever not feel the same intense love and lust for barrel aged stout.

Are they carnies?

You probably shouldn't trust carnies either, however, I'm pretty sure most of them like beer.

How can we tell apart carnies from people who don't like beer? Or, it doesn't matter since neither is trustworthy and both smell like cabbage?

I always imagined carnies were more malt liquor types.

The bitterness is still there unless you are talking a beer that is more akin to mead than beer. If it has hops, it is bitter as hops are bitter in flavor always. How much depends on how much hops are there. The hoppier the beer, aka IPAs, the more bitter the taste. If it doesn't have hops, it isn't beer and is something else. So all beers are bitter.

I really don't understand the comparison to piss. Are you guys putting salt in your beer?

And, if you think all beer tastes like shit, it is because you either consumed paint chips as a child or ate pizza so hot it permanently burned off your taste buds.

A nice caramel and chocolate stout is something to be celebrated. I suppose this is what happens when we are raised by soda. If it doesn't contain 50 grams of sugar per ounce, it is "too bitter"... Bunch of babies.

I don't force myself to like anything that is an "acquired taste".

That's like saying all pasta sauces are salty if they contain salt. When in fact they can easily be sweet if you add in sugar and lots of basil or other things to change the flavor balance.

Same thing with beer. Sure it has hops. But in some of the more malty ones the overwhelming taste is sweet with with a bit of alcohol heat due to the relatively high alcohol % in them. I would not classify them as bitter at all.

We'll just agree to disagree.

I agree with you. I've had many beers which had zero hint of bitterness in them.

Yup. It's sad. I actually dumped out half a beer the other night. I've got a terrible cold that has effectively nuked my taste and smelling ability. I opened up one of the hoppiest beers I had (over 100 IBU's) and I could smell nothing. Not a thing. It was like drinking cold, slightly carbonated water. I got through half the bottle not enjoying it in the least and dumped it out. I haven't had a beer in a week because of this stupid cold. It's not about getting shitfaced. Some people do actually appreciate the smell an flavors. Once I get my senses recovered I've got an awesome dark belgian ale waiting for me.

dumping out a beer with 100 iu?

have you considered jumping into a fire? the heretic kind.

how can you drink stouts and not ipas?

fine with imperial stouts but they are still hard to drink for me. maybe i will start drinking them and get used to them
