How dangerous is it to go like 120mph on a freeway?

i averaged 135mph for about 2 hours driving from GA to NC at night. if your car is made to handle high speeds and there is no traffic it not too bad. but it also depends on roads, down in the south we have nice smooth roads as compared to the crap they call roads up north.

You should really consider reaction time...

It will take you at least 1 second (if not more) to react seeing the brake light of the car in front on you and then move your foot to the brake pedal and press...

guess how many feet you travel in that one second?

at 60 mph, you will travel 88 feet in one second
at 80 mph, you will travel 117 feet in one second
at 120 mph, you will travel 176 feet in one second

imagine if it takes 2 seconds to react and press the brake pedal...

granted, the car in front of you doesn't come to a complete stop immediately, but you should get the picture here...

i'd lay money this guy tail gates on the freeway because both cars can stop in the same distance, so there is no way he could ever rear end someone...


Nice job pulling some lame stats out of yar a$$.it takes the average driver less then .5 sec to reacto some braking in front of them.

I've done 111 mph in my truck. It was done legally though. Depending on traffic, I usually drive between 90 and 100 mph. If I had the bigger motor that was offered in my truck, I could do 110 - 115 constantly on a level surface.

You dumb F. Freeways are not designed for those speeds. Reading about the German AUdibon will make the short comings obvious.

And that's also why they make race tracks you dip sh!t.


When's the last time you drove on the German "audibon" to make a qualified statement?

I saw a special on it's construction and maintenence on Modern Marvels. So go educate yourself. US highways are not intended for hi speed use. Six quick examples of Audibon:
1) curves are more gentle.
2) road surface much more level and less bumpy.
3) They don't do patch jobs, they replace large strips
4) peaks and valleys transition more slowly than in the US.
5) illegal to be in the left lane when not passing
6) illegal to pass in the right lane.

I think they even mentioned that hte maximum incline or decline is 7 degrees.

...and in middle America, the roads are long, straight, flat and uninhabited for half a dozen miles in either direction...

with 40 mph, u can have the whole car smashed pretty badly
thats without breaking. your head can hit the steering so badly.

now imagine what can 120mph do to yourself even if u do apply breaks on an accident.
go figure

of course, get it all figured out before its too late.

I would say its slightly less dangerous driving at 120 then at say, 130. However, you still need to be carefull, as you are going a bit faster then most of the other cars probably. Personally, I try to keep it under 100. Not because of "safety" since I used to drive faster then that a LOT and never came close te getting into a collision, but because it is a bit on the expensive side.

Worse gas milage, higher probabillity of getting caught by the police .. etc

Perception time is the three-quarters of a second it takes for you to realize that you need to brake. Reaction time is the three-quarters of a second it takes to move your foot to the brake pedal. When you combine perception and reaction time, a full 132 feet will pass before your car even begins to slow down from 60 mph.

Well what's the worst that can happen? Oh sure some guy could change lanes when you're not expecting it and plow into him at an effective 60 mph, and sure you might careen into a bunch of other cars as you're trumbling down the road, and ok I GUESS it's possible that the carnage might spill into the other side of the highway into oncomming traffic, and I suppose you might get torn to pieces and kill alot of other people in the process, but what's the point of having a TRICKED OUT (w3rd!) honda if you can't put everyone's lives in jeoprady, right?

There are stretch of roads in Montana and Idaho where you can drive as fast as you want. No cops and no traffic, most of the time. Too many teenagers have died driving too fast, especially boys, they think that they and their cars are good enough to drive fast. Ford Exploders are not meant to drive over 100 MPH.

Where can you find a listing of cars sorted by braking distance at 60mph anyways? That would be good info to have.

I use to avg. between 90-110mph on the freeway until...

1) Got TOO many speeding tickets...all thankfully under 90mph
2) Blew one of my tires out
3) Totalled my car

It's fun while it lasted, but if you like the car you've got...it's just not worth it.

RIP - '96 Infiniti I30t (Stillen Cold Air Intake, Exhaust, Struts, Tokico Springs/Shocks, 17" Momo's, limo tint, sound system etc etc)
Now i've got a '91 Hond Civic DX...5 speed baby! ;D

Your choice...

Not the best of ideas, but I wouldn't know, cause my limiter kicks in at 105mph. I was driving through wyoming, and the closest town was 100 miles away..

What a bunch of ball-less pussies. If 120mph scares you that much, maybe it's YOU that shouldn't be driving. Just because you can't control your vehicle at 80mph doesn't mean I can't control mine at 120.
