If the car is good enough, and like others have said...if traffic is very light, and you've been driving for at least a few years, I don't believe it is too dangerous. The problem with doing it here as opposed to the autobahn, is that the general population sucks fat monkey dick at driving, and the roads aren't kept in as good condition. I think more tickets should be given out to the fvcking idoits you can't drive as opposed to the speeders (which sometimes, or often, are the same group).

That's not entirely correct.

In the mid 90's, Montana had no posted daytime speed limit. It was a "safe and prudent" limit. Safety advocates and other nanny-staters claimed that the fatality rate would skyrocket. It never did. In fact it went down slightly, which doesn't mean much, but it surely didn't go up.

[/b]In addition, the car I drove in Germany was an Opel Corsa. It had a 1.2 liter engine putting out around 80 hp. It wouldn't go that fast, and I had that thing floored to get up to speed. Most of the cars there were small econoboxes and not Ferraris and Porsches like in the movies.[/b]

You and I are from the US and we both have the US training and schooling. I didn't die when I went over there and neither did you. We did just fine. Sure, there are some morons out there in the US that probably would crash over there. But those same people also pose a great risk on US roads, and honestly shouldn't have a license. Everyone here knows that we need stricter driver's tests, and more "common-sense" laws. People don't take driving seriously- they're "non-drivers". They just hit the gas pedal and pick up their cell phone so they can talk while they drive their 5,000 lb SUV to Wal-Mart.

Yes and no, in my experience. Yeah, one time over there we had an Opel probably quite similar to yours, but another time we had a mercedes. Both times we have seen Porches or Jaguars, what have you, go flying by in the left lane. Motorcylces too. We took the Mercedes up to 125, felt perfectly safe, the car handled it well, and everything was great. I know if I lived over there, I would probably cruise close to 100.

I see you're not familiar with the driving style and skill of teenagers/ederly people/soccer moms in America...

If you don't think massive amounts of death would occur if the speed limit was raised you need to look around more.

So would you blame the death on the laws, or the pitifully poor drivers? Lots of people die every year due to smoking, also. Should we blame that on the lack of a "no-smoking" law, or should we blame people's poor health choices?

Bad drivers are going to get killed. Should we nerf the entire country because you get a few fools who can't control themselves?

I don't care if the bad drivers kill themselves however they want. If their reckless/bad driving endanger me, then I would want some laws to crack down on those drivers before they drag me into one of their accident.

1. If you hit a patch of ice, you'll kill someone else and their small child.
2. If a cow or moose crosses the road in front of you, you'll probably die (98%)
3. If a deer crosses the road in front of you, it'll total your car.
3.1 Even a cat/dog crossing the road in front of you at that speed can do a surprising amount of damage to your car.
4. If a human is on the road for any reason whatsoever, you'll probably go to jail for manslaughter if you were driving that fast.
5. As has been mentioned, the curves on the road in the US are designed for the rated speed and no faster. Traveling faster may cause your car to leave the road, lose control, and/or flip over.

Well, since most of our freeways were built for "future" cars that could do ~80-100 but still handled like the stuff in the 30's... The road itself is pretty f'ing safe at those speeds. But there are of course the risks that come from being:

1) Stupid enough to ask this
2) ON A FVCKING PUBLIC ROAD WITH OTHER PEOPLE AND COPS

I find this the case on non-interstates only. Interstates, at least all the ones I've been on, seem to have been overbuilt by an obscene margin.

It's only as safe as the driver makes it. If you gave the guy that testdrives every Lambo for a living a '92 suburban, he could probably handle it well at 130. Give a 16 year old your MB, and he WILL crater it before 130.

Wow. That's even dumber than me.

You risk:

Losing control, possibly killing yourself or someone else
Getting pulled over, and getting fined up the ass.

I'll do 140-150kp/h on the 407ETR, but that highway is empty, and everyone does that speed usually.
Never knew you were an Ontarian.

Instead of enacting laws which hinder all of us, why don't we just make the driving test much harder so that the bad drivers are weeded out?

As we all know, the driving test as it is now is a joke.

Everyone should watch this video and be highly afraid.

I've seen that and it's not all that. I've seen a lot worse on a motorcycle. (squeezing in between two vehicles, etc.)

WRONG.

The 55 mph speed limit was enacted to conserve gasoline, not for any safety reasons. It was enacted in 1973/4. Before that states were able to set their own speed limits. Obviously the same road that was marked for 75 mph in 1973 didn't become "unsafe" to drive at 75 mph in 1974 when the limit was changed to 55 mph. After that measure was enacted, the municipalities got a bad case of revenue addiction. They didn't want to relinquish control and give up what amounted to another form of taxation.

While a speed limit is necessary on most smaller roads, plenty of large highways could support much higher speed limits.

People in this country have a slave complex. After obeying for so long, they begin to think that what they're told by their master is morally right. They do this to make themselves feel better, as if they're doing the right thing. It's much easier than actually doing something about the situation that they're in. People blindly adopt any policy that's forced upon them. They're non-thinking sheep and little else.

That's pretty stupid. I can't believe you actually soliciting an answer to this.
Please, for my children's sake. Go to the DMV and turn in your license IMMEDATELY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Better not let your children ever go to Germany.

Given. But putting the sheep's balls on the line because you're more enlightened than them is NOT morally right.

Why the hell is everyone talking about the right kind of car?

I've done 120 in my corolla. Yah, it's the MAX and my governor kicks on and drops my speed back down to 115, but I've done it. Scared the crap outa me the first time it happened but it was no big deal. I was averaging 110-115 on a trip down from Colorado Springs to San Antonio the whole way down. Rarely saw anyone else on the road and made the 900 mile trip in about 8 hours or so.

The ONLY places I had to slow down was those annoying as tiny town in Texas that are so small that you blink and you drive right past them. The problem is, most of those towns put a damn CHURCH on the HIGHWAY with a stoplight and change the speed limit to 35 MPH for about 200 yards of road. Almost everyone of them has a damn cop sitting there.

I only drive fast like that on the highways though across large distances when no one else is usually around or everyone else is going at a decent speed. Heck, I drive from SA to Port Aransas quite often at those speeds. Was doing so with a cop driving along side me with no problem. BUT never drive those speeds around a holiday or "vacation" time frame on the highway. You WILL be busted. Any other time.. bleh.

How am I putting their balls on the line? I'm not forcing them to drive any faster, I'm merely saying that the limit should be raised.
