reason why DeJoy is shutting down sorting machines:
USPS officials and industry insiders say sorters are taken offline every year, though the 671 earmarked represents a substantially larger share of the agency’s inventory.

USPS officials and industry insiders say the removals were part of a long-range plan, one that reflects Americans' diminishing use for letters and growing reliance on package delivery.
removing the machines also creates valuable floor space for package processing.
so it's like killing 2 birds with one stone.
But this year’s reductions in sorting capacity are larger than they were in prior years.
In 2018, for instance, the agency decommissioned roughly 3% of its Delivery Bar Code Sorters, or 125 machines. In 2019, it was 5%, or 186 machines.
The 671 on this year's list amounted to about 13%.
based on the article in my previous post (#191), it seems like it's too many machines to shut down in the time of Covid-19.
this plus the elimination of overtime is leading to mail delivery delays and some mail completely 'lost.'
it instills fears that my ballot might not be delivered in time or even 'lost' in Nov.
