I'd love test the G3220 paired with a Geforce 750/750 Ti. Should be a capable, cheap and efficient gaming PC that could be upgraded to quad-core Haswell/Broadwell-K later on.

no 4 threads means microstuttering in some games.


but i do agree that these low to mid range parts need to be tested with some realistic graphics cards, rather than only testing the integrated and some high end part.

Yes. but those games that require 4 cores simply require higher hardware budget to play them as cheap 4 cores from Kabini or BayTrail won't be enough as well and in many cases can be actually even worse than strong dual core.

Is there any indication that the Haswell refresh pentiums/celerons might support the AES-NI instruction set?

From what I've seen, I'd say that's highly unlikely. We'll likely have to wait for Skylake-based Pentiums/Celerons for that to happen...

Considering even AMD's lowest-end Sempron 2650 supports both AES-NI and AVX, this really sucks... 🙄

Yeah, that is kind of annoying. I'm planning on putting together a NAS/Back-up Server and I'm checking out the cheapest CPUs that can handle both AES-NI and ECC RAM. I think from intel that starts at the i3, but that seems like much more horsepower than I need for the price.

Mentioning the Sempron is inspiring me to scout AMD's options more thoroughly, though.

Quick scouting later, and it looks like ALL Bulldozer, Piledriver, Steamroller and Jaguar based CPUs support AES-NI. That's pretty nifty.

Unfortunately, only AM3+ CPUs supports ECC. I haven't seen anything to indicate FM2(+) and AM1 are capable of it. Though I'd be glad to be proven wrong... 🙂

Not sure about ECC but you need an i5 to get AES in an Intel cpu.
 
you can get a Pentium G3220 which supports ECC. I am planning on building a freenas server with this CPU and a supermicro MB.
 
In the past Toms Hardware has tried building lower-end gaming systems with a 3 Gig Pentium Dual Core and using a good video card. I would expect some loss of performance but if you try to build a computer to cut corners on money then you have to make tradeoffs.

That said, it's pretty ridiculous that intel has stuck the "Pentium" name on those bay trails. The G1820 is in a totally different ballpark than even the highest clocked bay trail. It should be called a Celeron Ultralight or something like that. it's just false advertising to refer to bay trail as "pentium".

Agreed. I was actually starting to like Atom, then they screwed it up with this baytrail Pentium/Celeron garbage. AMD did the same with their A4-A6s. The idea that some models are still called Atom (like the upcoming Chromebooks) makes it even stranger. Then we have "mobile" i3-i7 Core all with 2 cores and U and Y and J, everything is a mixed up tossed salad of disorganization 😱
 
Motherboard asus h81-m C(latest bios). g3258 1.3 volts @4.6. Temps: 37c idle/~80c load (tx3 coolermaster/thermal paste). Did not try to push it far,yet for quietness reasons. I tried with msi h81, asus seems more stable. Memory: some cheap generic 1333.

I'm desperate with this MB and OCing a G3258, nobody can help me anywhere.

Since i've seen u managed to OC yours with the same MoBo can you explain me how did u manage it?.

So far i changed this values but i can't get past Windows loading screen:

  • CPU Core Ratio: Sync All Cores
    • 1-Core Ratio Limit: 44
    • 2-Core Ratio Limit: 44

  • CPU Core Voltage: Manual Mode
    • CPU Core Voltage Override: 1.300v
Even if i set the Core Ratio Limit to 33 (only 100MHz OC) with 1.3 vcore i can't get past windows loading screen!.


I flashed the MoBo with the latest bios version.


What i'm missing? did u change something else?, did you overclock using the BIOS or a tool from ASUS under Windows?.

Is set to Auto but i also tested with setting it to 32.

I just noticed something interesting, i just installed ASUS AI Suite in order to check if it has more OC options and apparently it doesn't let me change the CPU Cache Ratio further than 32... so it seems this motherboard cant OC at all?, and i swear i got the last BIOS version (2106). I'm still wondering how lyssword managed to do it.
