other reasons including but not limited to the trackpad.

So the trackpad alone is worth 700 dollars more for a 13"MBP than a 300" 10" netbook? While I do quite enjoy the Apple trackpad it is not worth 700 dollars.

3" is a lot of real estate space.

once again we're boiling this down to what you're actually going to USE the damn thing for and for me the netbooks are TOO small.

13" is as low as I go for work. I want an iPad but that would truly be just a toy.

Finally, when we're comparing laptops of equal quality the markups are not that big (Envy vs Apple)

When I buy a laptop I'm looking at the features that I will use MOST of the time, and 2 of the most critical components of any laptop are battery life and pointer (nub, trackpad, whatever).

Sorry but I'm not buying a laptop because twice a week I want to play Starcraft. If you're a gamer I 100% agree that Apple sucks. But if you're NOT a gamer I just don't see where most of the population NEEDS so much power.

Ns1 you can get more "power" for less, you can get portability and battery life for less, you are paying a premium for a 1 piece aluminum heatsink case which gets hotter than any other laptop I have used and an OS. You can find high quality LED LCDs on other laptops now, Apple doesn't have a monopoly again on nice screens. Look I like the 13" MBP, imo that's the best value they sell everything else is laughable imo.

if you want to post up an actual laptop example we can compare.

when i was looking the ONLY thing I found comparable to MB's were the Envy series and it really boiled down to what you were going to use it for.

As a PACKAGE I feel the MB is superior if you do not need to game OR need blu-ray

If you need BR or gaming then the HP is a no brainer.

You can launch into spec tirades but in terms of actual usage and efficiency for the things that I do, the MB does it better and faster, and I don't need to constantly be around outlets to do it.

Well do you need it to do work or do you need it to just surf with? You don't need a 1000 dollar 13" MBP to do work you could buy a 500 dollar Lenovo which would cover it, in fact that's what I use. It's 15.4" too, since 2.4" is a lot of real estate.

I think the poster was referring to Final Cut Studio, not Adobe Premiere.

which would confirm his claim as being ridiculous

Final Cut is no better than a slew of non-linear video editors (of which Windows gives you the most options), and if anything Premiere Pro CS5 is the new lead dog with its support for GPU accelerated real-time editing and is available for both Windows and Mac

I don't think the Envy sells something comparable to the 13" MBP imo. Like I said I like the 13" MBP, it's a good value and a pretty decent computer. The rest of Apples PCs are laughable at best. Also if I was buying style and luxury LOL @ Apple or HP. I'm going Sony and spending an extra 600 on full CARBON FIBER case, cause carbon fiber is fucking way tighter than shitty aluminum.

I actually bought the macbook originally cuz I was tired of the apple hate and I wanted to see for myself what the hype/hate was about.

I hated it for the first 2 months and then fell in love with it. I do PC repair on the side so I get a lot of windows laptops in to play with, each and every time I hate how goddamn slow I am at doing basic tasks. I know it sounds really fucking stupid but 2 finger scroll alone increased my productivity by damn near 25%, and 2 finger scroll on every other non-apple laptop I've used sucks donkey balls.

The trackpad while to the touch isn't my favorite, it is my favorite trackpad, but I just don't use my trackpad period. I have a little portable mouse the size of an eraser that has left click right click and I can use it on the empty space to the right of the trackpad no problem. Maybe if I had a tightass MBP I'd use it, but I much prefer mice.

I would suggest MBPs for laptop (especially the 13 inchers). The 13" isn't too big/too small, and it's not too overpriced (IMO) relative to other high end laptops. You can bootcamp if you want windows or you can stick with OS X (or do both).

i prefer the mouse for gaming/office but the trackpad for everything else. there's just SO much you can do with 4 fingers on that sexy ass trackpad.

Obviously you have never been even half way into PC games. Never heard of a lan party?

I mean I guess, but do you really do that often enough to warrant a laptop that lasts an hour on battery?

This reminds me of the argument about people driving trucks - daily driving a terrible interior/ride vehicle so you can help your friends move couches twice a year.

Yeah I can see that. I don't have one to use everyday, always been more of a mouse guy though than the trackpad or nub.

Recently? No, my friends and I are older now so we do it probably once a year or so. Laptops are much better to bring than your monitor + whole PC setup.

I actually brought my entire pc to my friend's for a lan the other day, much easier than it used to be. PC + monitor + 3 cables + wireless kb/m. I was surprised. I want to sell that case and get a lanboy now.

...and when you want to play SC2 no one gives a fuck that your laptop can last 6 hours o_O Horses for courses.

so where are we at then? The entire argument for an Hp17 rests on the fact that it's powerful enough to play games?

cuz if that's it then I got no arguments. The envy line IS great for games and are far superior to MBP's for that purpose.
