I grew up in the Dakotas around guns & had a pretty decent collection till I went to college, & enede up selling them to pay tuition. Moved to Texas & didn't feel the need to own one.
Got married, my wife's ex was a drunken looser, he 7 a buddy of his dropped by one night to pick up his kid, they were both drunk. I prevented them from taking the child but got assaulted in the process & was pretty bruised up. I called the police before fists started to fly, but they showed up 15 min after the drunks left, took them 2 hours to catch them. Both were convicted of assault, wife's ex got a DUI.
I got to thinking, what if they'd been less drunk, and bought my first gun in 10 years.
Skip forward ~5 years, I was @ home, had just totaled a Honda CRX (no car in the driveway) the day before & was chilling on pain medications. Heard a diesel engine pull up to the garage, grabbedgun & walked out front, lo & behold, it was an ex GF & 2 guys, there to burglarize me. I called 911 & held them @ gunpoint till they were carted off by Sheriff's dept.
Skip forward 2 years, I had just been awarded custody of a 14 year old ex stepdaughter who decides to turn a movie date into a drunken overnight sex party, I go to her BF's house, extract her, BF & big brother decide they feel my parenting skills suck & start kicking the crap out of me, I get to my car, take a gun from under the seat, fire it into the ground and they run away. Police show up ~ 1 hour later, bad guys get arrested, both go to jail.
So basically, I use my guns to protect myself, your argument about being tough enough fall apart when you're attacked by more than one person. I also hunt & target shoot.
Don't get me wrong my current wife & 2 daughters are all taking martial arts classes & are pretty decent, I think being able to protect yourself is important.
