The MK2 is less than a year old. Look it up.

The MkII barely changed the gun. The FiveSeven went into production in 1998, so it's nearly 16 years old.

Oh, and the MkII requires you to buy a new holster because the 2 is bigger than the 1. Brilliant!

Best gun of all time not found. Niche gun not many people care about found.

So it's been about a year since I started buying guns. I just negotiated for a S&W Model 41, which will the 49th handgun in my collection. Most of the guns I have are pretty pedestrian and often picked just to complete a lineup. For my 50th handgun, I'd like something special, so no more Glocks or M&Ps. Also, nothing that will require months or years to custom build. It should be somewhat available.

So what recommendations would you have?
Since you obviously have money burning a hole in your pocket you might want to consider some revolvers. The feel is just completely different than a semi-auto.

Along those same lines, you may want to consider custom 1911. I'm not well versed in 1911s but basically the sky is the limit. You can easily spend $5k on one. The way I see it your collection is like having a collection of Hondas, Toyotas and some Chevys. Solid weapons that work but nothing all that special. Time to go for the high end stuff.

Have you seen the oil filter suppressors? Not sure if they make them for 7.62's like the SKS but it should be available.

The threaded adapter is still an NFA part with a serial number requiring the $200 tax stamp I can't even apply for being a CA resident. Sure, I could make one, but it would be a felony. And when the aliens land, you can bet your ass I'll be getting one if possible as soon as possible.

Find a range you like.
Take the NRA Basic Pistol Shooting Course.

The instructor may have a variety of pistols in a variety of calibers that you can shoot. He may not. If he doesn't, spend some time at the range renting a variety of pistols. Find what is comfortable for you.

Price ammunition. You'll find 9mm is about a third less than .40. It adds up.

Backups? Having identical guns isn't really needed. Instead of 3 of the same gun, I'd rather have.....

-.22 pistol, like a Ruger Mark III. Cheap ammo allows for plenty of range time.

-something small for concealed carry in whatever caliber you find you like.

-something in a larger frame, probably in the same caliber as your carry gun, for around the house.

That's not carved in stone, just a thought.

It's important to be a responsible gun owner. This means a gun safe, or at least gun locks.

Also, listen to Clint Smith.

I carry, train, and rest at home with the same firearm as my main defensive weapon though I have others to choose from.

I specifically bought two of the same handguns for this purpose. One to carry, one for the house/bedroom that has one of the new style flashlight strobes as with the strobe mounted it doesn't fit in my holster... The other is my carry. Same mags, same trigger, same grips, same safety mechanisms, same sights.

Main point is, at a time of stress you want to ensure that you are as proficient as possible... Using the same firearm for all environments ensures that.

That is my add on what you said above which was sound advice.

As an update, I got a Sig Sauer X-Five Tactical as my 50th handgun.

I just don't get it...why so many of the same brands? I mean, I'm 100% for 'it's your money' and don't want to shit on your purchases...it's not like you buy BAD guns, for sure.

But why not throw a little money at some less common stuff? I promise you'll find some things that make you say 'holy moly how did I not know how good this was'?

Maybe that is an 'uncommon' gun to you; I'm not that familiar with Sigs. But my brain says 'just another 226.'

Is it an investment thing? 'Cause I can definitely understand that. You buy, say, a 9mm Glock at a reasonable, less-than-MSRP dealer price...you're not losing money. But try to sell something just a little more unusual (that isn't dirt cheap), and you start to feel that whole 'lack of demand.' I've felt that with two different guns that (IMHO) were superior to Glocks at a lower price. (Kahr CM9, Steyr M9...not looking to feud with Glock fans...note the 'IMHO' ;P)

How about Zastava EZ-9 or Cz-999?
They are both Sig clones. As reliable and with ambidextrous control.

Couple questions since you say you are in California:

- You can only acquire 1 handgun per month from a FFL, so were most of the 50 handguns in the last year from PPTs or consignment?

- Were you aware that as soon as you attached those magazines to the rifles in the pictures, you could technically be investigated for possession of an assault weapon? Police will seize any "large capacity" magazine in the event you are pulled over, but just having them isnt a crime (yet). The second it is attached to a rifle that is not "featureless," that rifle is now an assault weapon in the eyes of Commiefornia. Even if you later proved they didn't have a spring, or could not hold more than 10 rounds, why do you want to even bother with it? Hopefully those were taken outside of CA ;)

To answer someone's question as to why he may not have an insane variety of brands in his collection, it has to do with our draconian laws. Only handguns on the "safe list" can be sold in CA to non-LEOs. In order for a manufacturer to get their handgun on the safe list, they have to send the CA DOJ a pair of samples, and pay a crap ton of money for them to test them.

This state sucks.

Navigating California gun regulations sounds like a nightmare. You know a law is complete shit when you can so easily break it without trying or knowing.

On the plus side, at least your governor vetoed most of the absurd bills that the legislature passed earlier this year.

You have no idea of the horror.

I just began my 10 day on my CZ SP01. Turns out that even though the SP01 is on the safe handgun roster, the version I got has a different SKU from the one on the roster, so I had to SSE it. Seriously, it's the EXACT same gun, but since the magazine had a different capacity, it had a different SKU so it is treated as a completely different gun by the state.

Different finish? CA considers it unsafe. Different grip than the one on roster? CA considers it unsafe. New rear sight? CA considers it unsafe. No microstamping? CA considers it unsafe. No loaded chamber indicator? CA considers it unsafe. Different color than the one on roster? CA considers it unsafe.

Right now I'm limited to one gun per month that I can get off-roster and to even get that one, I have to pay an additional $125 SSE conversion fee per gun on top of DROS and tax. Everything else is through PPT. So the upshot is, beggars can't be choosers.

Just don't forget to take the new long gun registration law into account...if you're worried about that kind of thing.

Yeah, I went on a long gun spending spree because of that new law. The only two I didn't get off my wish list were a PS90 and a M1A.

I'm thinking about buying a vacation house out of state now.

Only way that works is to surrender your CA license and become a resident of the new state.

About to purchase my first handgun. I liked shooting my friend's Sig P226 .40, so I figured I'd get that one. How is it as a beginner gun?
You become a good shot by shooting thousands of rounds, and that's cheaper with .22 than .40.

And you honestly think shooting .22 rounds will make you a better shot when you shoot .40?

A little bit. But eventually you will need to shoot .40.

I never carry a gun without putting at least 200 rounds thru it first. Thats so I know the gun is reliable, and I am reliable.

It usually takes 4 saturdays in a row to do that properly (blasting off ammo like Mel Gibson doesnt count as "shooting").

I think you should have gotten the x5 competition instead of the tactical if you wanted something a little more special.

I have a very strong preference for black guns. Though I just bought a FDE Tavor 18" yesterday.
