I was wondering the Unions had to say about this.

This morning's announcement by GM CEO Rick Wagoner has left CAW branch president Chris Buckley slightly upset to say the least. Buckley, who represents workers at the Oshawa truck plant, which GM plans to close in September of next year, said GM's decision is "nothing short of betrayal."

What a dumbass. I suppose GM should continue hemorrhaging money and wasting resources producing vehicles nobody wants just so that plant can stay open. How do these short sighted idiots ever get in positions of power anyway...nevermind...one look at our President and the idiots who voted for him answers that quesiton.

You have to consider that he is in a very political position...if he made a comment saying he applauds this decision...the union would have his neck in minutes. So just like any politician...they make asinine comments that are not grounded in sense to appease their constituents. Actually gets depressing the more you think about it...

Did anybody read the link??!?!?!?!!?

They are pissed because they agreed to concessions on the promise that they would maintain their jobs and get a hybrid line at their plant, less than a year ago. Wagoner lied to them, and they are pissed about it.

blah blah blah...end of the world...blah blah blah...really? Shit like this has happened over and over in history. This is not different than any other point. Sure...the US may not be the super power it once was...but neither is Britain...or France...or Italy...but you don't see the people in those countries doing poorly. The end of the world is not near and our kids will grow up just fine.

I did read the link. Yes...GM appears to be going back on their agreement in the interest of keeping the company afloat. The problem is that to believe that GM should hemorrhage money at a plant making vehicles that don't sell just to make the Union happy is ridiculous. Sure, Unions have there purpose to some degree in protecting their workers...but expecting a company to go under just to stick with an agreement that no longer makes sense based on market conditions is STUPID. So I stick by my statement.

I think the argument is not that they should hemmorage money and go under just to keep the plant open. If they go out of business it's bad for the union as well. It sounds like the union believes that the company lied and never had any intention of doing the things they said. Union or not, if I had an employer make promises, then turn right around and disregard those promises, I'd be pissed too. I know most of ATOT thinks employees should just shut up and take whatever their employers give them. I don't. Self employment FTW. 🙂

We have the technology, so give people the choice to buy electric only vehicles now regardless of the range. My commute is only 3 miles to the subway. I could bike if I wanted to, but I live in a bad area, so i'm not going to risk my life to save a few bucks.

Why do we have to wait until 2010 to get an all electric vehicle? What have they been doing for the past 5 years? Planning for more big SUV's?

Yeah, it's automotive companies who are forcing us to demand big vehicles, people would never do that.

No, actually it's marketing that makes us think we NEED these big vehicles.

How do you get a sheet of plywood home in a Cooper Mini? How about a BBQ grill? or a new dog house, or play sand or a bunch of plants to landscape your yard?

And now MARKETING is saying we all want tiny ass small vehicles because they are trendy and better on gas mileage, guess what, these small trendy gas sippers will soon cost more than the gas hog trucks and SUV's because MFGers will now they can charge a premium on those since they are in demand. I wouldn't be to surprised if the cost of ownership didn't equal what a vehicle with a lower MPG rating costs.

If youa re a contractor, go ahead and get that truck since it is justified. For the occational big item purchases, I would just rent the HD cubevan. I drive a 2002 Protegé5. It's fun enough for me and not too shabby on gas. Currently doing 70% highway and about 11.5KM/L. I was able to carry rather large items in it too. 4 Burner BBQ (still in box), snowblower (unassembled, out of box), and a 6 person kitchen table's top. Of course, 1 at a time, but these are rare events in one's life. Why would I drive a big vehicle around just in case I need to buy those things?

Stop it. You're just making sense now...there is no place for logic or reason in this thread.

lol

we put a 36in Panasonic Tau CRT TV in a Sabb 9-3 with a 6 speaker sorround sound set
took TV out of the box but it fit

i agree a company should NEVER make promises it has no intention to keep. but to be fair what choice did they have? they tell the union the truth they would have been sued and be facing a strike.

hell it seems like most of the time the unions would rather have it go out of business then make cutbacks.

They could tell the TRUTH. Corporate America seems to have quite the aversion to the truth these days.

What exactly would the union sue for? Go on strike? If you want to close a plant, what do you care? If they are on strike, no severance (at least in most union contracts).

GM is going under. It's unstoppable. I just better not see my tax dollars bail them out. I'm sick of the gubment bailing out failed corporations. If I went under, they sure as hell wouldn't do anything to help me. Don't even get me started about subsidies. Where's my friggen subsidy?

So GM's problems aren't public knowledge? EVERYONE knows what sort of screwed up condition GM is in. But the unions DON'T GIVE A SHIT. All they want is jobs now. They don't care if they're crippling their source of livelihood. And no GM going under isn't unstoppable, get rid of the unions and you get a mountain of worries off of the domestics back.

It is unstoppable. Sorry. And it's not the union that is doing it. Sorry about that as well. They had a good run. If they wanted the union out, they could do it. This discussion has played out on ATOT a million times, so I'm not going any farther. Lunchtime! 🙂

edit - and yes, everyone knows about GM's problems, so I guess yes, the Union should be happy they were lied to, since, "they should have known it was a lie" - great logic there.

They got concessions (wage freeze being the biggest) from the union in exchange for a promise to keep the plant open. This was rectified mid May. Don't tell me they did not know they were closing Oshawa then.

BINGO. See my post above.

The tech exists, right now, today. All that was needed was to lift it from Europe and apply it here.

You can thank the hippy clean air bullshit for blocking it.

That clean air is for us Liberal queers and the clean-lunged, right?

Diesel is cleaner then gas.

This is perhaps the stupidest comment I have seen in a month, out of a deluge of stupidity on the internet. You win this month's I SUCK AT LIFE award. Congratulations.

You simultaneously cheer for the loss of jobs and vehicle choices, zerologically equate driving with destroying the Earth, and defend high fuel prices. If you have graduated college, demad a refund. If you are still there, run while you have a small portion of your wits left. If you have yet to go to college, I suggest you can earn some extra money crab fishing for as long as it takes you to fall overboard.

You are also the frontrunner for my annual award. Once again congrats!

That's funny, because SUVs aren't ultra safe. With their propensity for rolling over I'd argue that they are less safe than a fullsize sedan.
