Since when was there an anime-to-live-action-movie adaption that didn't suck balls? Dragon Ball Evolution? That godawful Last Airbender movie?

It doesn't look as embarrassing as those two shit-fest movies (cause of SJ), but that doesn't mean it'll be any good.

EDIT: And just to further my point, there were also anime-to-live-action adaptations of both Fist of the North Star and Mobile Suit Gundam. The Gundam one was called G-Saviour and it's truly god awful. Almost explains why there hasn't been anymore live action adaptions of Gundam.

The Fist of the North Star 95' movie was released straight to video. Guess how well it fared? Very poorly.

Lucy sucked but the fifth element was great, so it's 50/50 already. A live action anime usually doesn't go well, but maybe this one might be ok?

Honestly it'll probably suck an incredible amount and the only thing that will keep it from being a bust will be many gratuitous shots of ScarJo in that bodysuit. That's fairly standard for big movies now though so I guess no one will be surprised.

Watching the most recent trailer, it seems to me that they've taken the character of the Major (self-confident, experienced, bordering on mary-sue), and turned her into an emotional wreck who also needs to be lectured about taking better care of herself.

I think the Japanese penchant to omit, or at least downplay, epicanthal folds in a lot of manga makes this less nauseating than the Matt Damon movie, but it still has that whitewash feel to it.

While I'm disappointed by it already to a degree, I'm sure I'll still watch it eventually if only to see how they do Batou's Standard Issue Big Gun scene.

It's more like "We're short on big-name Asian actresses that would bring in box office sales like SJ". Scarlett is a huge and popular actress that would bring in more viewers than some random Asian actress that nobody knows about.

And, just to be that guy, everyone saying someone can't portray a fictional character in a work taking liberties with the source material because of their race as fuck. You sound very similar to the people saying a black girl can't play Harry Potter's friend or that Idris Elba can't be James Bond because they are black.

If it's not either Mary Elizabeth McGlynn or (better yet) Atsuko Tanaka voicing Kusanagi, it'd just be too weird for me. Also pity that he's too old, but Ron Perlman would've been a dead ringer for Batou.

Fair enough, but there are quite a few that are good (eg. Itazura na Kiss, Wakako-sake, Kimi ni Todoke, Kuragehime, (hopefully) Your Lie in April).
