I think GitS is yet another example of a franchise that should go into cold storage until someone with an inspired vision and some decent plot ideas comes along to revive it, because Western film tropes + chesticles + CSI Cyber really isn't going to cut it, except maybe amongst the teen fappy hormone crowd.

Problem has never been the source material. It's the targetting. They want the biggest target audience they can get, which basically make the movies all generic. Every x minutes you must have this or that happens. Good scripts be damned.

I mean The Great Wall? Wtfbbq.

I don't know, I have the feeling that they ran out of source material given the way the 'Arise' series/movie went; basically a lot of action and little content that made GitS great, e.g. in the first movie, the business of symex (sp?) erasures not being technically possible yet, so the idea of some moneyless peon who's been hacked and will continue to suffer false memory flashbacks, showing that great things are possible in the future, but they definitely have their drawbacks and those without the means to throw money at technical problems are even more at risk from this great future, so they're at a greater disadvantage than before that tech era. The 'Arise' movie had one interesting bit in about the cyberization (sp?) industry pushing to classify those who don't want it as mentally ill.

Otherwise there was an awful lot of bollocks in the 'Arise' series, e.g. "stuxnet" left, right and centre, which made no technical sense. In the 'SAC' series it wasn't as bad but it got a bit grating at times when cyber attacks were presented basically as cyber versions of 'pew pew' and 'tech the tech' ie. meaningless technobabble, "The Major is the best at haxoring" but there's no why or therefore or sometimes even any limitations in abilities.

Interesting that you mention Great Wall. In terms of box office and ratings, it makes for a good comparison. They both have Asian themes and both also had race controversy - whitewashing/white saviour.

Opening weekend, The Great Wall got a piddly $18.5 million in US/Canada, despite its $150 million budget. GitS got an estimated $19 million on a $110 million budget. Both are poorly rated, but with The Great Wall worse.

However, both did considerably better overseas. Currently The Great Wall only has $45 million in US/Canada after 6.x weeks, and it seems unlikely it will hit even $50 million through its run. However, it has already hit $330 million worldwide, with over $170 million in China alone, where it had over $60 million opening weekend. GitS got $40 million opening weekend overall outside of US/Canada (although I'm not sure how much of that was in China). It will be interesting to see how well GitS does overseas overall.

I think Arise was written by someone else.

The Great Wall was betting big on China, thus the setting. Matt Damon was there for the western market.

Matt Damon was there for both markets. He's quite popular in China. The Martian was extremely successful in China.

I haven't seen GITS yet so I will hold my judgement but The Wall was bad and it had nothing to do with "whitewash" allegation. Let see, the plot was bad, history about the Wall was bad, the action scenes were barely ok. The only things that were decent about the movie were the cute actress and the CGI was decent. I would say that movie was about 6/10 at best.

The movie was a flop. If a diff actor played MJor let's say a Chinese actor then the movie would even sucked more because everything was bad just watch it lol. SJ saved the movie cuz she is pretty and all the teens are horny you know? and not the movie itself. Just watch the anime series don't bother with the live action. It's boring as hell. It's shit.

Looks like the this one has been called DOA. Media already doing reports on how much it will lose, and it's just whether it's an 8 or 9 digit number.

Even when Redbox has had nothing the past few weeks I've gone, I still haven't wanted to rent this movie.
