getting into work at 9 is late?

The company has official hours of operation and you have to abide by those unless you're told they're flexible. This isn't rocket science. Here, the "official" hours are 8:30 to 5:00 but many in my immediate area don't show up until 9:00 or so and work later to make up for it. Management has no problem with it.

When I worked for a big corporation (IBM), the office hours were 8:00am - 5:00pm. There was a fair amount of flexibility, so if I occasionally rolled in at 8:30 or 9:00 nobody would bitch, but it was definitely noticed if it became a habit. I hated my commute at the time, so I routinely arrived between 7:00 and 7:30 to avoid the traffic. This also was noticed and I was complemented on my dedication and got a very nice review and raise.

Now that I am running my own business, my hours are typically 6:30am to 5:30pm. Long days, but much more rewarding.

errr - since when does your previous workplace set the precedent for your current employment?

so you never asked your boss when you should come in???

This just seems like something that would be understood when you start any job, unless you're some sort of uber exec who makes his own hours.

I do 7:30-4:30 while most people do 8:30-5:30 just in case something isn't working in the morning.

We have core hours but I want to know when people are going to be at work. You want to start at 7? Fine. You want to start at 9? Fine. But it can't be random from day to day depending on what you feel like doing. I need to know when people are going to be here. If you are a typical 7 AM starter and tomorrow you want to come in at 8:30, that's fine too. Just tell me ahead of time.

That's because people will be coming to me and asking when so-and-so will be in because they need something, and my answer can't be "I don't know."

But other places can be much more flexible and have no problem with people coming in at different times on different days.

I am surprised that the OP didn't have an understanding of what the boss expected. If the boss never made it clear, then as an employee you have to bring it up so you don't have any unpleasant conversations.

My thoughts exactly. One of the first questions you ask when starting a job are when the day typically starts for the office. It's a judgement call from there based on your boss and co-workers as to when you should show up.

My last job was 8 AM with +/- 2 hours, so it was fairly flexible. My current one, I usually come in around 9 (except if there's a meeting earlier than that of course).

It depends on the company culture. When I work now (non-profit), 9am is ok. The firm I worked for before, 9am would be considered late.

All depends on your official start time. Mine is 7:30, and I usually get here 7:25, my coworker always shows up a half hour early though.

The official hours here are 8-5, but most people work 7-3. I work 8-4. Some people work 10-6. Really, as long as you are here for any meetings, and you are getting your work done, it doesn't matter when you work.

You could always just sneak in the side door 15 minutes late and just space out for an hour, you know, where you just stare at your desk but make it look like you're working. And also make sure to do it for an hour or so after lunch too.

I just ate some shit from the boss that I should be here at 8:30.
At all previous workplaces, it seemed like showing up around 9 was just fine
This is a typical corporate environment

Your boss thinks he can tell you what time you're supposed to start!? What is this North Korea? Are we in communist China all of a sudden? Punch him in the face then drink 7 beers right in front of him.

Seriously though have you asked any of your former bosses to talk to your current boss? He might not know that you're accustomed to starting at 9.

Same here. For people who don't directly interact with clients, I don't really understand why it matters what time you work. I can do my job from 8pm to 4am just as well as 8am to 4pm.

at my previous job i could come and go as i pleased, come in 2 hours late, take a 3 hour lunch, leave 2 hours early, no one said shit because my work was done and i was essentially on call 24/7/365 as well

current job, only been here a little over a month, no one is "clock watching" me but I am trying to do the 8-5 thing since i'm the new guy. my group goes to lunch together and is typically gone 1-1.5 hours, again no clock watching being done. Everyone else in my group also gets a telecommute day, which I should have soon as well. here's how everyone in my group seems to work:

1 guy is in at 7 and gone by 4
1 guy is in at 7:30 and gone by 4:30
1 guy is in between 8-9 and leaves between 4-6
1 guy is in by 10:30 and leaves around 6 but also works from home until midnight some days

i would hate to ever have another job where not coming in at a certain time (unless there is a meeting scheduled or something) meant any sort of reprimand...

if your boss wants you there at 8:30, you're supposed to be there at 8:30. if he doesn't care that you come in at 9, then come in at nine. the key here, is that HE'S YOUR BOSS.

I have struggled against this reality in vain for four years and it has actually done some damage to my career. Listen to this. The last thing you want brought up in a performance review is stupid bullshit like this (hell, if you're really going to fuck up, make it worth it.).

I start at 9, it's too early. I wish I could start at 10. Then I could avoid traffic and have nice and short commutes.

God I love this quote.

OP should be fired for not knowing his own company's policy on hours.

I know my company's policy. Core hours are 9:30-3:30. Show up anytime before 9:30 and leave anytime after 3:30, and get in your 8 hours. Every company is different. Most places don't let their employees come in as late as 9:30.

I stopped reading the replies after the first page because people are making too many assumptions

There are no official operation hours because I don't work in IT helpdesk like you guys might. I work at a consulting company and I go project by project to different client sites. It obviously depends on the project, however I've worked on many consulting projects in the past at consulting firms, and 9AM seems to be the right time to stroll into work. I work past 6 on most nights anyway.
