getting into work at 9 is late?

I like being able to get in here when ever I do and leaving when I want (although that usually translates to 8:30-5).
 
My last job was 6 to 2 so I cant relate. But my understanding is most 9 to 5 jobs usually want you in the building a little early. To me 8:30 sounds like you are not working 9 to 5. You're working 8:30 to 5. And they better pay you for it.
 
yup, depends on the work schedule, if he says 8:30, the it's 8:30. did you not ask what the start time was?

And if I got in at 9am, I'd be 9 hours late.
 
I'm kind of surprised by the number of people expecting to be paid for working 8.5 hours or whatnot. Isn't some casual overtime kind of an expectation for most salaried office jobs?

I work in operations consulting (not IT if you care so much). I transferred office to SF bay and kept my job. I am thinking of going to the career fair in the future to see any new opportunities. Not sure where the disconnect is.

Working for other people sucks ass, which is why I do not and will never again do so. Having someone tell me what to do makes me murderous.

depends on the company i think,

also i cant remember the last time i only worked 40 hours in a 5 day week
 
Our engineering staff pretty much can come and go as we please. That being said, we are busy as fuck, and if you want to get your work done, you will work lots of hours(paid by the hour), I usually get in around 5:30-5:45, but we have some that roll in at 9:00-9:30. As long as the work is getting done, no one really cares when you show up. The people that come in late, typically stay till 7-8pm, I like to get off early when I'm not busy.
 
My hours are so flexible it's not funny. I come in anywhere between 8am to 10:30am on a regular day. Now that I go to school part-time, I come in anywhere from 11am to 1pm after class.

I'm also the last person, except for my head manager, to leave every day, so eff that. Most people in my office come in for a few hours and take off for various unannounced reasons.
 
Wow it's been a long time since I thought 9 was an acceptable start time. I get to work between 6:45 and 7:00 for a 7:30 'official' start time.

Personally, I like to work 7-4 but I now have to get kids to school so I work 8:30-5:30. I let my boss know about the change and he's cool with it. When I was working with guys in Singapore I would routinely work 5:30AM - 3:30 just so I would overlap with them in the morning and we would have a conference call. Our policy is to be available from 10-3 every day, don't miss meeting and do enough work beyond that to get your assignments done.
