I stopped reading the replies after the first page because people are making too many assumptions

There are no official operation hours because I don't work in IT helpdesk like you guys might. I work at a consulting company and I go project by project to different client sites. It obviously depends on the project, however I've worked on many consulting projects in the past at consulting firms, and 9AM seems to be the right time to stroll into work. I work past 6 on most nights anyway.

As a consultant you will negotiate this for each project. You need to discuss it with the customer. If you have issue with it, push back.

Consulting n00b.

I work 7AM - 4PM, take lunch around 12:30 or 1:00. My start/end time can vary by a half hour or so. No one cares, I get my work done - and then some. In fact, I get so much work done I doubt anyone dares say anything to me lest I back off a bit.

Protip...if you don't want people making assumptions, include more details in your OP ;)

I saw "typical corporate environment" in your OP, and made the assumption that you work in a, well typical corporate environment.

Did we ever get an answer if there are standard or expected hours at this place or is it still pulling answers out of behinds?

one of my friends is in middle-management at an accounting firm... he got a talking to from his boss once ever being ~10 minutes late twice in a week.

I'd go nuts.

my scheduled hours are 8 am - 6 pm. unless I'm working from home, it nearly always ends up being more like 9 am - 7:30 pm (or days like today when I really overslept and showed up at 10 am). though otoh, when I'm working from home, it's usually something like 7:30 am - 8 pm

No answers really
He just said its "consulting" and that "9AM seems to be the right time to stroll into work"...

I still just don't get how this is something you don't KNOW or ask about at a new job.

I'm kind of surprised by the number of people expecting to be paid for working 8.5 hours or whatnot. Isn't some casual overtime kind of an expectation for most salaried office jobs?

I work a lot of OT, voluntarily. I'd be annoyed if some OT is built into the working schedule and probably wouldn't put in any voluntary OT.

Your boss thinks he can tell you what time you're supposed to start!? What is this North Korea? Are we in communist China all of a sudden? Punch him in the face then drink 7 beers right in front of him.

Seriously though have you asked any of your former bosses to talk to your current boss? He might not know that you're accustomed to starting at 9.

I don't think the current boss would care what his former bosses have to say.

depends on if the position is classified as exempt or non-exempt.

I get in around 6-7. I am supposed to be there at 7:30 or 8:00, depends what boss you ask. Yeah its a lot of overage, but its been worth it, I am much less stressed and soon I will be able to go back to normal.

sounds like a situation my brother is in

gets to work about 7:45, leaves around 6-6:30 and got 'talked to' about leaving work early

If he's salary, it depends on what the salary is. I'm not working for nothing, but I am flexible, though I only bend in 2 directions. When a company says they like flexibility, you translate to "we want you at our beck and call at any time". Companies like that can go fuck themselves. I'll work late, and come in on days off, but I'd better not hear a damned thing if I want to leave early on occasion, or just don't feel like coming in on a particular day.

his manager is a loser who never goes home whether he has work to do or not because he has no home life(sinlge ackward mid 30's dude)

I asked him if hes missing deadlines and he swears hes not.

dude just likes to have office full so hes not lonely I guess

I told him to get a new job
