First 12 hours with my iphone 4s impressions (Coming from an EVO4G)

Activation was a breeze. That's my first initial reaction to this phone. Then WOW. This phone is fast! There is a HUGE difference GPU acceleration of the UI! Reminds me of my mom's WP7 (though I know iOS came first)

I don't know what apps to get, but I got myself a GPS Navigation called MotionX GPS Drive. Then came the problems:

Siri couldn't understand anything, and it said "Cannot connect to network". Even though I'm on Wi-Fi. Had to restart the phone... First day I got it and I already have to restart it... After the restart, it turns out that someone left me a voicemail... Which is very strange. I can't have my phone not letting me know that I received a voicemail until I restart or call my phone number.

This morning, Alarm set to 8:30AM. When it came time to wake me up (I was already up) all it did was buzz. No sound or anything. Couldn't turn the damn thing off unless I restart the phone as well too. WTF. Then I noticed I had a miss call as well at around 8:15AM -- Which eventually led me to think, I gotta restart the phone again. Restart the phone, tested the alarm - which finally worked - and bam. Another voicemail. Wow 2 restarts on Day 1. As much as I hated my Android, and how slow it was, at least it was reliable!

Then came something I'm going to have to deal with: Selecting the address of my contact on my EVO 4G would prompt me to which Navigation Software to Use, and if I would like to use it as Default. Not the iPhone. You get Google Maps, period. Kind of annoying, but I can deal with it.

Alarm will ring your socks off regardless of whether or not the phone is on silent, there is no way it would just buzz unless you specifically set Sound to "None", plus it would keep on recurring because Snooze is on by default.

I'm not seeing any bug report about an alarm bug so not sure what was wrong with yours there.

Regarding Siri, you may want to reset your network settings rather than just restarting the phone. Or did you mean "restart" as in "reset settings"?

If all else fails, you can just bring that phone back to Apple and demand a replacement. See if a replacement would work better.

As for address, you could hold down on the address, copy it, and paste it into the GPS app of your choice. Beats being sent to Google Maps every time.

I think the servers for Siri are just getting overloaded. It wasn't working for me about 15 min ago even though the network connection was fine.

like I said, ill just live with it. Regarding the alarm issue, it's not just "snoozing". It doesn't sound, and I have my ringer all the way. (and it's not on mute) It just kept buzzing. Even after I deleted my only alarm. I will say that I created the alarm with Siri.

Anyways, just resetted my network... hopefully it'll go smoothly this time. I'm on Sprint, and I have an airvana. Maybe that has something to do with it..

Siri's servers probably got destroyed last night. It wasn't working last night but it's working fine now. I am thinking of questions/things to say to it.

My favorite so far is:

Me: u mad?
Siri: If you say so.

Alarm worked fine for me btw I don't know what happen with yours...check the settings.

People say iOS is polished yet you can't even open a contacts address in the gps app of your choice without resulting to copy and paste? That sounds like something I would have expected for Windows Mobile 5 or Symbian not iOS.

Siri server were most likely overloaded as people said. However my buddy complained about having to save everything twice because it cant understand him it also wont redial which he finds annoying

That's not an iOS problem - that's an app problem.

TomTom works perfectly; just click the name of the contact, and the address is automatically selected for navigation. No copy/paste involved.

Does Siri work out of the box, or do I have to teach it?
Siri works right out of the box, without any work on your part. And the more you use Siri, the better it will understand you. It does this by learning about your accent and other characteristics of your voice. Siri uses voice recognition algorithms to categorize your voice into one of the dialects or accents it understands. As more people use Siri and it’s exposed to more variations of a language, its overall recognition of dialects and accents will continue to improve, and Siri will work even better.

Siri also uses information from your contacts, music library, calendars, and reminders to better understand what you say. So it responds more accurately when you ask to make a phone call, play music, or create an appointment or reminder.

If you like, you can reset what Siri has learned about your voice by turning Siri off and then back on in Settings > General > Siri.
I've used a voice recognition device a lt, and as it learns, it gets a lot better.

that said, Siri worked fine after a restart. I'm just concerned about my voicemail. It's very inconsistent. What's the command to have siri read you your text messages?

I picked up the 4s last night and am pretty happy with it so far. It's done everything the first time, no prob on alarms or with Siri.

This is my first iPhone - I've been on various Android phones since launch day of the original VZW droid. After a bad experience with the bionic it's nice to have something that just works out of the box.

curious what was wrong with your bionic?

The biggest problem I had was it kept turning off the radio when it switched from 3g to LTE , so I would go a couple hours without the phone being "on" Same thing would happen with WiFi, when I walked around the office it would drop one transmitter and not pickup the next automatically even though they were remembered.

The battery life was all over the map, one day it would kick ass, the next I would be lucky to get 6 hours out of it.

Too bad, I really liked it - it was smoking fast, thin and light for it's size.

I may go back to an Android phone after the Droid Razor and/or Galaxy Nexus come out.

I'm got my new phone set up the first time today, not being able to Siri at all yet, don't know if its Apple servers or my phone :-/

Siri works fine for me and has worked every time I tried it. I just tried it now asking, "What's on my calendar for today" and "Do I have any reminders?" Both questions came back with exactly what I was expecting.

I haven't tried my alarm yet, but now that you're complaining about it... that kind of worries me since I use my phone as my alarm. 😛 Maybe I'll turn my 3GS back on tomorrow just in case.

Apple doesn't allow overriding the of the default apps. So if you click on a browser link, it opens in safari no matter what. Same for directions. There are jailbreak tweaks that can change that stuff. I use one for the browser.

But as someone mentioned, as long as the actual app has a way to view contacts, you can just select the contact directly from the GPS app.

I finally got Siri working again. Disable Siri -> Reset Network -> Enable Siri.

I just hope this isn't going to be a regular thing...

That's a little better but it would still be a deal breaker for me. One of the best things about Android is how flawlessly it integrates all of your third party apps and lets them have the same functionality as the default ones.
