Interesting that this tidbit was not mentioned in this article but appears on the msnbc.com one:

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/38973698/ns/us_news/

"Arpaio said he provided "hundreds of thousands" of reports but hasn't turned over others because the department's request was too broad."

This definitely changes the story since the yahoo one makes it appear that the Sheriff has not turned over any documents...

Even if they themselves are breaking the law?

Sounds nice.

First of all, just because the Justice Dept requests something doesnt automatically mean the request is legal, or reasonable. Second, Joe's office has sent the Justice Dept thousands of pages of documents already, and the Justice Dept is asking for more. And lastly, you need to get Joe's side of the story to bring context. He has been quoted as saying he is trying to determine exactly what they want, and they have yet to tell him:

http://www.cleveland.com/nation/index.ssf/2010/09/refusing_to_show_his_documents.html

The lawsuit said the department is investigating police practices and jail policies but did not specify the documents sought in its dozens of requests. It was filed in U.S. District Court in Phoenix and names Arpaio, the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office and the county.

Even in their new lawsuit they dont specify what they want. So you really think think the problem is with Sheriff Joe and not the Justice Dept. harassing him?

How about this? Joe's department is suspected of breaking some laws.

Government asks Joe to provide records.

Joe refuses for 15 months.

Government sues Joe for not providing records.

Who's breaking the law?

Government has to follow procedures.

They have to identify what they want and then it gets turned over.

Otherwise it becomes a Salem witch hunt

Of course it's about intimidation. Obama is all top down and I note he's not above going after others he dislikes. One does not challenge the King.

You believe "illegal immigrants are bad" some of us believe "the laws that make it hard for people to immigrate legally" are bad. They are going to climb walls, swim across rivers, wait in queues, pay money, or do absolutely everything and anything they can to come into the USA. If we make it harder to get in, sure, a smaller number might succeed, but, it isn't going to solve anything. The only solution to illegal immigration is for Mexico to get it's shit straight, and for the quality of life in Mexico to rise. That is the only total solution.

Illegals aren't "invading", they are coming because they want to have a shot at the American dream. If we treat them like criminals, they'll act like criminals. But, I'll tell you this, if I lived in that shithole across the border, I'd do whatever it took to make it north. And I suspect 99% of everybody who things illegal immigration is a problem would also do the same....

This country needs major immigration reform. The statue of liberty says "Give me your tired, your poor/Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free." In doesn't say "fuck you if you aren't American." The message of America is one of majestic greatness, not of elitist greed.
I don't think anyone here has a problem with legal immigration. Legal immigration is what makes America awesome. But illegal immigration sucks away public money and just creates a giant drain on the system. Then the politicians pander to the illegals in the hopes that anchor babies will vote for them when they grow up.

If he's breaking a law, they would arrest him. They are just bullying him around now, but you people just eat it up. Innocent until proven guilty? Not if your a coservative trying to enforce a law the liberals don't want enforced.

If he's innocent he "should" beat it.

Probably. I don't feel much about this guy one way or another but the feds have picked him now almost certainly because they can. Here's an adminstration which doesn't seem to have the time to investigate Iraq, but can go after this guy.

Huh, people actually defend Sheriff Joe. Maybe he'll have a few more prisoners murdered under his watch to show his appreciation from his fans, you guys like that.

"You people"?

Hmmm...got an agenda?

Really? I'm keen to see the criminal charges for that. I'm all for punishing murderers. Now just go and prove that he was responsible.

We wait breathlessly.

Second, is that the Federal Government has a lot more power than anyone else, and in spite of that are not allowed to say "give me everything you have". Perhaps you are in favor for de facto kings, but we really did toss them out a while ago. What I don't know is the real story here, and neither do you. I'll make a judgment about this when more comes out.

Sheriff Joe has cost the taxpayers of Maricopa County tens of millions of dollars in wrongful death settlements. Looks like a another round of payouts on the horizon to cover his stupid antics. And he keeps getting re-elected. I guess voters in Maricopa County are meaner than they are greedy.

*sniffle*

Obama gave me a $100K grant to start my terror anchor baby foster home, can't wait to start training them. First target, those rednecks in Hollywood FL.

LOL, yea im a Asian Redneck. Moron. Guess you are one of those simple minded folks who think anyone who is against illegal immigration = white. And I bet you think 100% of latinos are pro-illegal to, you probably do since its simple minded [and yet you called me a redneck haha, the name fits you better].

You seem to be quite an angry person. You might try getting more exercise.

He's being sued because he's refusing to hand over documents for the discrimination investigation. What is he hiding?

Look at all the buffoons falling for the misleading thread title.

From an earlier post in this thread.

If you're trying to stop illegal immigration, and you're in a state that borders Mexico, the largest source of illegal immigrants, HOW are you going to determine who's illegal if you don't do a bit of racial profiling?

Seems perfectly sensible to me, and there should be no problems with that, if once the person establishes their legal right to be in the USA, (citizen, green card) they aren't hassled, harassed, or detained without cause.

This country NEEDS a uniform ID card issued to all citizens and legal residents. I dislike the potential for abuse that RFID-enabled ID cards carry...but there is a serious need for a "nearly impossible to counterfeit" form of identification in this country.
