I needed to replace that ship anyways hehe.

Using a worthless new trial account character, I flew a Minmatar Reaper deep into the Raz0r alliance's space, maybe 15 jumps inside 0.0 space. No one attacked me. I was trying to find a gatecamp for a laugh. Checked the map for kill areas. No dice. No one was there. I bet they'd find me if I was flying something valuable.

The ship itself isn't the biggest valuable item. In fact really it's the modules you have on your ship and what is inside your cargo haul that would prove to be more valuable to any would be ganker.

I hope those of you who are thinking of downloading the Premium content know about the boot.ini issue. QA screwed up big time and deleted the boot.ini file on Windows XP installations. If you have system restore, use that, or just use a backup like I did.

Oopsie.

So I created a trial account, downloaded the full installer on one of my Win2K machines (apparently not affected by the boot.ini issue), and took a look at the graphics. It looked good, for the few minutes the client was running, but then my system bluescreened. :( It's probably not EVE's fault, as there's a LOT of cruft on that machine.

The boot.ini issue is huge. They really screwed the pooch on that one....

I hope it doesnt impact the game too much and that people can figure it out without just "reformatting".

Wow. Part of me is sad to see this happening, a bigger part of me thinks its hilarious.

Some idiot dev wrote "delete /boot.ini" instead of "delete boot.ini" This had the effect of deleting the Windows boot.ini instead of Eve Online's boot.ini.

Wow. I can't believe CCP messed up this much

Its not that bad. I got hit with it however I don't have a PC built at the factory. It doesn't hurt anyone that has their windows installed in c:\windows as you don't need the boot.ini file to load it since that is default pointer in the MBR.

The biggest problem is people who buy PCs from manufacturers who've cut costs and don't ship you a Windows CD or your recovery media and those who have no sense of ownership of their PC to make sure they have a boot CD available if they installed their windows onto another partition or drive or someone like Dell put it in to a folder other than c:\windows.

It's a crappy state of affairs but at this point CCP can only make it right by providing information on how to fix it on their website and giving some sort of time compensation. It's a long standing issue with windows having people defaultly run as an administrator and hopefully people start wising up and stop thinking their computer game box is a console. There is a required responsibility by an owner to have a spare set of car keys so to speak for their PCs. The boot.ini problems are one of the longest standing security issues on the NT platform except for Vista.

Thinking of opening a 2nd account for mining\building things. Very pathetic but dont want to spend weeks turning my fighter into a miner\industrialist.

That's not pathetic. Pathetic is when I was running 4 accounts in order to specialize in different areas. ;)

I used the "Power of 2" campaign to start a character to just sit in our POS and man the guns and run production and lab jobs. He'll also double as a hauler to grab the loot off my main character or ore when my main is ratting or mining. Should be maybe 1 more month of training and then I'll look at what other type of character I would like to have.

I originally thought of my main character as a builder/industrialist and rolled him up without ever having played the game. I ended up with very high Memory and Int and low Perception and middling Willpower. Of course, that makes training for any ship highly painful.

The good news is that 20.5M skill points later I have a very good foundation of PvP skills and I can start really leveraging the industrial/science base ability after March or so.

I can also start training a new alt up from scratch in my second account with the right balance to begin with. I'm also considering using isk to buy a jump freighter capable pilot once jump freighters reach reasonable levels of cost. By flowing minerals from 0.0 to Empire and from Empire back out to 0.0, I should be able to make plenty of isk. The market where I am in 0.0 is OK, but they really mark-up prices and that gives plenty of opportunity for a more reasonably priced supplier (like me) to make very good profit and also strengthen the area I'm in.

Very nice but I have a friend who goes beyond this, he 5 boxes in WoW. 4x shaman + paladin :D

Hilarious watching the reactions of friend and foe when he rolls through. Going to activate my second character tonight :)

how can you control so many characters at once? I personally don't see any pt in the industrial side of this game. Even the PvP side is very slow and somewhat "boring". It is fun because of the tension -- it is a suspense game, not a thriller or action-shooter.

But the industrial side seems to me to be.. just boring lol....

Actually, I have 1.9 mil, and I fly very well thank you very much.

I will explain how.

I have BC level 3, Heavy Missiles 3, Rapid Launch 4, Nav 3, Science 4, Tac Shield Manip 3 (working on 4 now), Electronics 4, Drones 4, Energy Grids II, Engineering IV. Shield Upgrades III. I also have BS 3 and Torps 3.

This lets me fit all T1 shield stuff and T2 Ballistic Controls and T2 Shield Boosters (for the Raven).

In 6 days, I will be able to run Invuln Field IIs and other T2 hardeners.

I can *easily* tank and kill twin 800k Sansha's in 0.0 and I do it all the time.

I will admit that I suck in PvP and I die in 90% of the fights I get into. I have learned to avoid fights.

I have other skills as well obviously, but those seemed like the most impt to list.

I got my cash with a game time card and since then I have made a ton ratting.

I sincerely doubt you can fly a BS well. The only way to determine a fight is in pvp. Drakes can AFK mission run lvl 4's but that doesn't mean anything. If you can't kill ships in pvp and you don't like pvp then eve is not for you... The entire game is built around it. I have a 1.25m sp alt that can run some lvl 4's. If I gave her 1.8m sp I'm sure I could run most lvl 4's except for a tiny few. The main thing is that pvp is the center of the game and all judgements are based on that view.

edit: btw pvp is of course about suspense and action but it's not your usual fps based style. It doesn't make any fight fair nor fun all the time. You will get ganked at one point. My Celestis got jumped in amamake by a 12 man BEES gang but that was expected. I mean my corp got a freighter kill the other day with 89million trit(God what a pain to haul back to station) but the best part was in my opinion the actual planning and execution of it. My corp mate threw down a probe and was like "Freighter is xxxx km away from me so it's probably close to station. *10 seconds pass* SHIT NO IT'S not! GET OVER HERE NOW! He's 50km away from me(after he warped cloaked)" This was after the guy had smacked us in local along with his escort and we told him we could pop it. I wasn't there on the op but I was on vent just to listen. I honestly found that some of the best fun.

I love pvp...Im in a Merc/PvP corp... I also accept my limitations.. I also don't like dying a lot.. but whatever...

I *know* I cant fly a BS "well". I also know that a 2 mil SP pilot in a BS or BC can still be dangerous in the right small gang or right situation. That is what I love about EvE. I might not be "level 70" but I can still hop in a ship I am willing to lose and do some damage to someone.

It's fun, and you are right, there is a lot of suspense in PvP

I controlled 4 characters by running 2 PCs with 2 clients each in windowed mode. The older two are just about at 40m SP.

I'm currently in dilemma with EvE, I love ransom (to the tune of 'answer me these riddles three' in local) and I even more love to take on stupid odds (and usually lose) but it does get boring. Politics are the core of the game, and also its curse. I just left Insurgency because the leaders are lying, demanding, shouting, berating and ignorant asses who have dug themselves a great deep hole which is slowly caving in on them. Now waiting to join goons, 4d application and still nothing.

I've just broken 27m sp, flying most all matari ships. Look up 'Osmodious' in game if you want a some useless banter.

I resubscribed on a lark. Don't know if I'm going to continue with it, but I'll check things out. Yesterday I flew my main character out of what is apparently now IRON space out in the drone regions....

EVE is only boring if you are playing with a group of people who have lost their will to do daily tasks for a tangible goal that can be completed in a short amount of time. Once you loose that in a group of people the game will start to tear you down because its a sand box that doesn't apologize if you can't make your own fun. Find people in your timezones that want to be active. As to the industry part of EVE... sorry it isn't pointless. Industry and logistics is what PVP revolves around. If all you want is nonstop pew pew then play UT2k4 or Counter-Strike.

Control multiple characters is easier if you have multiple monitors and run one in windowed mode in each of them.

The industrial side, boring? Depends for whom.

Eve is great as it has something for various types of people. Lots of pvp for those who want it... alliance politics and territory conquest for those who love grand schemes.

Remember Simcity? Lots of people love that type of game. Eve can be a sandbox for carebears who like that type of gaming. Carebears and PvPers need each other, without PvPers the markets would crash for lack of demand, and without carebears PvPers would suffer from the lack of supply.

To each his own.

Stefx is correct about different aspects of the game and how they appeal to different people. I know people in the game who really enjoy creating Excel spreadsheets to calculate profit margins on various items they are producing, and to them that's exciting stuff.

I been toying with the idea of trying EO. I've played DAoC since it came out. Still playing it. Played Horizons and WoW for a while too. Looking for something new and different while I'm waiting for WAR. I read this thread. Is the boot.ini problem taken care of yet?

I just started researching the game and I was thinking Caldari/Civire race suited my personality and playstyle but I need to look into it a bit deeper. I read on the VN board that Eve University is a good place for noobs to get their feet wet and some help before getting deeper into the game. I like to solo but I also like to play with others too. I was thinking that since I'm a shift worker and work nights a large guild (corporation?) would be the better way to go since I'll be playing mornings or early afternoons east coast time for the most part.

Any tips for someone not versed in Eve style of MMO gaming?

Edit: Oh, is it better to DL the game or buy it retail? I assume the new Trinity version has all the latest needed to play everywhere in Eve? By that I mean I dont need any of the older expansions too do I?

It's just one file. Download the new Trinity client and you'll have everything. You can play free for two weeks (you don't need to give them your credit card number, either), so no harm done if you don't like it.

You don't apply to Goons you get invited into Goons. From what I know and only those registered members of the SomethingAweful forums have a shot of being invited into Goons.
