I think that crosses the line. If I'm reading this correctly, he HAS the money, some of, if not all of, which he got from his JOB. That would pretty much negates the spoiled part, though I cant speak to whether his parents buy him things, but I would assume that his parents buy him some things, as most parents do.

As for the dumb part, I didn't even blink when I dropped that much on my main rig, since I knew I'd use it and enjoy it. Its his money, if he wants to spend 2100 on a Powerbook, he has every right to, though I'd probably look at a 14.1 inch ibook with a gig of ram and an Applecare plan plus a couple other nick nacks for 1500 give or take with a student discount.

All this kid is asking for is advice on how to get his dad's blessing on a rather large purchase (something that didn't even occur to me in my younger years) and let him use his credit card for a 5 minute loan so he can get a first rate laptop, and you guys have either responded with "OMG MACS R TEH SUXORZ" or "fsking spoiled brat" and my favorite "get a job and buy it yourself."

I dont have a credit card by the way, I stick with my debit card and it hasn't failed me yet.

I think what they're trying to harshly imply, is that 2K for a laptop is a rip off unless you seriously need it for work and college. Think about it.

A Mac makes a great college computer. You practically have to try to get viruses and/or spyware on a Mac. While your browsing habits may not warrant such a secure system, if you plan to let anyone else use it unsupervised, especially at college, you can't beat a Mac for security. Not because OS X is more secure than Windows XP, but because most malicious software will not run on Macs. But you can still do all the things you need to do for school... research things on the internet, type papers, listen to music, watch movies, burn CD's and DVD's, e-mail, etc. Maybe bring that up with your dad... you plan on keeping it for a while and will need it for school, and a Windows PC would require constant attention to make sure security hasn't been compromised, while a Mac would pretty much chug along without a problem.

At my colleges, we played a lot of games over the lan...i saw a freshman last week already bummed he can't lan it up with his mac laptop. Just make sure you dont want to play any games on the LAN at all before picking mac as well.

I disagree, they have to support many sets of hardware though they've designed all of their systems so it doesn't really matter. Macs are IMO very very unreliable for how proprietary they are. I mean windows has to support tons of configurations and be stable while the mac has to support many many fewer configurations. For such a proprietary setup, I expect the systems to be super reliable but they're not and it's quite sad to see something crash on something it was DESIGNED for.

You fail to account for the two variables they have no control over - 3rd party hardware (less than in Windows, but still there) and 3rd party software (less than in Windows, but still there). I'm not saying that Apple doesn't have their share of OS bugs and hardware bugs, but just because they provide a complete package doesn't make them immune to the problems that come with supporting software and hardware that they didn't produce.

Maybe he should get that new Acer Ferrari 4000. It will be pretty & it will relieve him of his $2100 quite nicely, while keeping dad happy.

An IBM laptop or a VOODOO PC laptop would be a better option.

Indeed, buy it yourself. If you want your parents to buy you a laptop, you should be satisfied with the $449 Sunday specials at the big box stores.

Point out the fact while having a great completely usable system right out of the box, that OSX is built on the BSD backend.This would give you a chance to learn the CLI.Of course you can do this with linux for free....

Posting from and Ibook.Why not just get a cheap little ibook like I have ( $1500)

Considering the cheap $500 laptops would have about the same performance as that ibook, yes....though you'd probably need to go up to $1000(and at the same time get a more powerful laptop) to get one in the same general build quality, weight, and battery life as the ibook. And by the time you add on the extra $500 to bring it up to the ibook price, you could have rocketed that laptop's performance far beyond any current ibook.(pc hardware upgrades are cheap, mac hardware upgrades are nonexistant almost)

Yeah, a website comparing the merits of two operating systems on their own should really factor in external applications/games that have absolutely nothing to do with the raw merit of the OS as it stands. If we went with your logic, a comparison of XP vs OSX would go something like this: XP is obviously 100x greater due to having 100x the applications! OSX is obviously 1000x greater as it has access to most open source via X while being able to run Virtual PC and thus most Windows apps, as well as the OSX native apps!

The raw merit of the OS has absolutely nothing to do with the applications/games/whatever that aren't included with the OS.
