Chantilly, VA (Fairfax)

5th floor in my office and they are doing construction right below on the 4th floor. I thought some moron had accidentally knocked something down and made my floor unstable. Then it really started shaking and I was like "Well.... that is definitely an Earthquake"

Any word on potential aftershocks? If there is too much more, I'm just going to work from home...

Yes we are...5.8 is about like a truck running over a curb...noticeable but not scary.

ZOMG! The entire Eastern Seaboard is going to fall into the ocean!! That means property in Colorado could be ocean front!! YAY!!
I don't really know anyone who's freaking out about it, just expressing surprise and befuddlement.

I've been living in the mid-atlantic/new england since 1990 and this is the first earth quake I've ever felt... probably not much different than the reaction would be if Los Angeles woke up to a couple inches of snow on the roads.

which is how many hundreds of miles away from DC?

Well, I just felt a 5.8 400 miles away. A 7.5+ on the NM fault could perhaps be felt in DC, although at best a minor shaking.

We'll take earthquakes over blizzards, hurricanes, and tornadoes any day.

Really? Loma Prieta(63 dead) or North Ridge (33 dead) better than a blizzard where unless you extend yourself shoveling snow won't do a damn thing to you, hurricanes which generally are nothing but a lot of rain unless you are on the actual coast where it comes in?

some of us only have 1 of those things and snow isnt bad
Snow is more about the inconvenience. Plus when you have snow plows that can't go out because there's too much snow, then it sucks.

Hurricanes suck because you have to leave or hunker down. That means everyone makes a mad rush to the grocery store for food and water.

Tornadoes are unpredictable as to where they'll go and can decimate cities and towns.

My co-workers are talking about the quake. I was another part of the building and didn't feel it. I assume it was cause I was walking around.

Downtown Columbus.

I felt it too, but thought it was a heli going over head or something. Was in the kitchen bottling my brew and listening to music. *shrugs*

I actually just drove through Mineral, VA on Sunday, coming back from a friend's house in Richmond. Fuck 95. 522 FTW!!!!!
