That explains the distance then. People always focus on the magnitude but the depth plays a big part of how fast the magnitude falls off.
In "the East Coast you have this old hard, cold crust that does a lovely job of transmitting the waves," says Lucy Jones, a seismologist with the U.S. Geological Survey. "This large of an earthquake . could definitely have been felt hundreds of miles away."
Felt it up here in Boston.

Dude, I hate to be the bearer of bad news but....your wife is having earth shattering quakes without you. Sorry. My wife felt it in Albany in a building (4th floor), but I didn't 10 miles north of her, I'm on ground level though.
In, Cambridge, MA....did not feel a thing.

This is the third quake we had in the Philadelphia area in the past month or 2.
The last one was only 1 mile from my house and cause a loud BOOM sound and had people spilling into the street and firetrucks and emergency vehicles scrambling.

Felt it big time here in Fairfax, VA... whole damn house was shaking. I grabbed a kid in each arm, and stood in a doorway. Scary as shit.
NOW WILL SMITH AND JADA ARE BREAKING UP?!?!
So power poles can fall on you?I thought the doorway thing wasn't the recommendation anymore? I thought it was to get out of the building completely.
