That explains the distance then. People always focus on the magnitude but the depth plays a big part of how fast the magnitude falls off.

East coast quakes can be felt much more widely due to the geological differences in the underlying geology.

In "the East Coast you have this old hard, cold crust that does a lovely job of transmitting the waves," says Lucy Jones, a seismologist with the U.S. Geological Survey. "This large of an earthquake …. could definitely have been felt hundreds of miles away."

Southboro, MA. I didn't feel it in my building (and many others in the same building likewise didn't) but people a couple hundred yards away in another building did.

didn't feel it here in NY, did you Anubis? I am in a building though, no shaking, rattling or rolling noticed here.

My wife felt it in Albany in a building (4th floor), but I didn't 10 miles north of her, I'm on ground level though.

Dude, I hate to be the bearer of bad news but....your wife is having earth shattering quakes without you. Sorry.

I didn't feel it, and I would have noticed if something did happen, but my dad did in the NC mountains.

In, Cambridge, MA....did not feel a thing.

I'm in the 8th floor in Kendall Square and it felt like a subway was running right by us. We originally thought it was renovations that are going on in the floor below but nobody was down there.

I felt it here in southern Connecticut, but it was so minor that I didn't think it was an earthquake until I heard it on the news. A slight window/glassware rattling was the only symptom and it felt like a dump truck was driving by.

Felt it in lower Manhattan, on the 21st floor. A co worker was talking with a relative in Virginia at the time and said she heard stuff falling down and shaking over the phone and then we felt it. Building management had to get on the pa a number of times to say everything was ok. My sis and some of her coworkers left their building as soon as they felt it (midtown).

Felt it big time here in Fairfax, VA... whole damn house was shaking. I grabbed a kid in each arm, and stood in a doorway. Scary as shit.

Wow, just got off the phone with a friend who said she felt an earthquake here in Doylestown, Pa. Frankly, I thought she was nuts and had just felt the effects of some nearby quarry blasting or some such, even though she'd said the whole building was shaking.

I'm just a few miles north, and didn't feel a thing.

I thought the doorway thing wasn't the recommendation anymore? I thought it was to get out of the building completely.
