Tall buildings like that don't worry me. Those kind of buildings have dampers installed due to having to deal with wind loads. They are probably safer to be in than smaller buildings that are built solid with no room to move.

Yeah, having never experienced a quake before (and nothing knowing what happened), I ran as fast I could downstairs. Didn't know if it was a terrorist attack or what. It shook the building like crazy.

That is a downside of dampers in buildings. They can make the shaking last longer, they just spread out the shaking over a longer period to lessen the effect.

We just sat down to lunch, noticed the building swaying a bit, told everyone it felt like an earthquake. Thought it was hilarious.

The streets outside are a mess...no doubt people were frazzled and are heading home early. Makes you wonder, how many people had their lives flash before their eyes today? Will we see a slight uptick in births around 23 May 2012?

Just outside Hartford, Connecticut. Our building swayed for over a minute - like one of those glider chairs. In the city the trees were swaying. Kinda crazy being 500 miles away and all :)

I'm in the 8th floor in Kendall Square and it felt like a subway was running right by us. We originally thought it was renovations that are going on in the floor below but nobody was down there.

Well, I am 4 bocks away from Kendall Sq. Did not feel a thing....maybe I was just numb due to all the job searching I have been doing....

I'm in Pittsburgh, and work on the 3rd floor of a very old converted house. I definitely felt it here. Boss yelled out from her office "Um, why is my desk shaking??" I walked over to talk to her, I knew what it was. Told her it was an earthquake but that it was over, then all the sudden it got much more intense, and I saw stuff on her shelves start to sway and shake pretty good.

At that point we actually got out of the building, we didnt know if it might get even stronger. I think because our building is so old and we're on the top floor, it made it feel stronger than it really was here.

I didn't feel anything, but it sounded like I had deer running across my roof. Just like the squirrels, only louder.

Because of what they're used to?

Boston gets 18" of snow, the fucking armada of plowers are glad to earn their tax dollars and rape the crap out of all snow throughout the state.

Atlanta gets 2" last year and the whole city shut down, not a single truck to prepare what to do.

I felt it down here in Western NC (Smoky Mtn area).

At first I thought there was something wrong with me, like I was getting woozy.

Then I looked up and noticed that the water in the water cooler was sloshing around.

Two things come to mind...

1) A 5.9 happens every 100+ years so that's a big deal.
2) Building codes here don't even take into consideration of this sort of thing. Lots of brick buildings and brick doesn't shake well.

It scared me. Thought it was a truck backing into the loading dock hard at first as that has happened before but it kept up, rolling, and got noticeably more prominent. A few of the jolts were like airline turbulence and knocked a few books off my desk. I thought the building was going to collapse so that was my cue to haul ass! By the time we ran outside it had stopped. Lots of people were outside and car alarms could be heard going off. Definitely a first time for us! (in Vienna Virginia)
