lol, the conspiracy theorists are saying that the BP oil spill has caused an inactive volcano to give new life to the new madrid fault line.

I was laying on the couch and it started to shake, we live near freight train tracks so I thought it was that but it was the wrong time of day :)

Felt nothing here in Blacksburg. As far as I can tell. Got loved ones up in DC area, nothing toppled, right? Can't get a hold of anyone.

No, it was just 30 seconds of wave like shaking. Nothing in my office fell off the shelves or anything.

Felt it here in north central CT too, first time I ever felt one. That was the wierdest feeling.

Yeah, it's my third one that I've felt at work. First one was in 2007 IIRC and was like a 6.3 about 75 miles away from my building. Second was last year and pretty small. This one was the most significant I've ever felt.

BREAKING NEWS
WASHINGTON — Thousands of people evacuated buildings across Washington, D.C., and New York City on Tuesday after a moderate earthquake in Virginia that was also felt as far south as Chapel Hill, N.C.

Parts of the Pentagon, White House and Capitol were among the areas evacuated.
Centered 87 miles from the nation's capital, the quake was a magnitude 5.9, the U.S. Geological Survey said.

At the U.S. Capitol, light fixtures swung and the building shook for about 15 seconds while the tremor hit, NBC News reported.

In New York City, NBC reported debris fell from the attorney general's office, causing a brief panic as people ran from the area.

Airport towers and government buildings in the city, including City Hall, were evacuated. The 26-story federal courthouse in lower Manhattan began swaying and hundreds of people were seen leaving the building.

A mild tremor was even felt by NBC reporters with President Barack Obama during his vacation on Martha's Vineyard, an island off Massachusetts.

The earthquake’s epicenter was between Charlottesville and Richmond, Va., the USGS reported. It was a very shallow quake, 3.7 miles deep, which would explain why it was so widely felt

I felt it here on the 4th floor of an office building here. Just slight swaying. I thought it felt a bit odd.

Our building doesn't instill confidence so when we felt it, everyone made for the door. At home 12 miles away, they didn't feel anything.

Wow. That was interesting. I work near Chinatown. The building started to move side to side, so I ducked under my desk. I could see the windows of opposite buildings vibrating and fluttering. Then the alarms kicked on, and it still looks like a giant block party outside.

Cell phones immediately became useless.

Unfortunately, living in DC, an earthquake is not the first scenario one considers; it's more like...if that was the bomb, where was the caboom?
