I signed up for the HW discussions, and FS/FT forums when I was building new systems every year or two. The FS/FT forums use to be fairly busy, and a reliable place for trading.

After being here a few years, I started following and occasionally posting in ATOT. There was a lot of entertainment there. Now it's a lot of silly pomes. ;)

The past 10 years or so, P&N has taken most of my attention here. I no longer build my own gaming towers, and only use a NUC as my main system now. FS/FT is a sliver of it's former traffic levels.

Forums + IRC > social media of any variety, IMO. Maybe I'm just old like the rest of you bastages!

FS/FT is pretty dead however the Ryzen 3600 "bare-bones" that was the last thing I sold there in April 22 still went fast! (I do price "aggressively" lol)

*(thanks @TheComputerGuy!) :)
Solid processor still. I want to replace mine with a Ryzen 9, but think more of my lag is due to bandwidth drops than anything.

I should sell more of my old stuff, but always seem to hold on to it too long.

The 5800X I upgraded to was a very noticeable speed-bump. (but not so much from 2 more cores rather it was the IPC and boost-clock)

Honestly if I had it to do again however I would hold onto the 3600 & Gigabyte B450 system and just grab some DDR4-3600 CL-14 RAM.

In retrospect that system while substantially slower then the 5800X/B550 machine overall STILL pushed my 3080 pretty hard @ 1440p/165hz!

:)

Depending on your motherboard the 5700X 8-core Zen 3 can be had for $270 & the 5800X is $288 on Amazon right now. Both would be well worth it or if you game a lot the 5800X3D is pretty compelling too but more money at approx $440.

IMO the 5900X (12-core) isn't worth the $110 higher price-tag over the 5700X and while the 5950X @ $549 (16-core) still CAN be worth it depending on what you use it for, if you want to go "high-end" I would hold out just a LITTLE bit longer! (or go Intel Alder Lake)

I'm always buying behind the performance curve when it comes to tech. I never buy what's new. My system was built Sept 2020 when things were getting challenging to find. I paid $180 for the 3600 and paired it with a MSI Tomahawk X570 because I wanted a little future-proofing and dug the slots and wifi @ $225. I ended up settling on the Gigabyte 1660 Super. Even though it was behind the 2000 series, I got it in the $200 price range and it's been pretty solid as well. It stumbles a bit on FS2000 but only due to bandwidth and in certain situations. 99% of the time, it runs without a hiccup, but they've cleaned the code up a lot for Xbox so the textures require less hardware. I can tell they've worked hard to get that game tuned. Nothing else I do even pushes the limits on my config and I rarely hear the fans even spin up. (I have many in my case that run idle)

I actually MADE a few dollars selling my 3600 lol ... I got it at what had to be pretty close to its cheapest for $156 shipped just before prices started going nuts and sold it for $160! (as part of a pkg-deal)

:p

Everything is dying, always.

From the fools gold mouthpiece the hollow horn
Plays wasted words, proves to warn
That he not busy being born
Is busy dying
Though the rules of the road have been lodged,
It's only people's games that you gotta dodge,
It's alright, ma, I can make it. ;)

The price dropped as low as $122 recently. For 32MB cache and PCI-E 4.0, that's not such a bad price, relative to the 4500 or 5500.

I bought three of them @ $132 ea. , before the $10 SS price drop.

Reddit took our place.

Remember when everyone posted tech help questions in OT because of how active it was? F5 crowd represent! :D That's how some of the subs can be there. No waiting for hours or days for a potential response. Of course the advice there is mostly users being try hards. E.G. One of the few instances where I took the time to help there, I was reading all these responses involving command lines and networking hardware replacements. I told the OP to turn it off and back on again/unplug the router and plug it back in after a minute. He was very grateful it resolved the issues he had been having for weeks.

Sorry.... I meant close to the lowest it dropped PRE-Zen 3. ;)

I feel like ATOT has actually been a little more active over the last year than maybe 2-3 years ago.
Yeah the younger generation are not on there. I think it's because they don't really want to be on the same platform as their parents. My nephews went on there a bit then stopped posting anything. I'm not even sure what social media they use. I feel like a boomer myself in that regard lol. I actually made an instagram account a while back, and I don't even see the point of it. I can literally do the same thing with Imgur or a self hosted solution.
That's because despite your age, you're a crochety old bastard already ;)
The point isn't what it does, the point is that's what they're using, and connecting to people is the point. FB is full of people like... well, you.

I seem to have encountered many "types" here, some very knowledgeable. I must say, many have saved me A LOT OF TIME AND DIFFICULTY! Many have steered to toward some great things of many types.

And many in P&N have contributed (vigorously I might add!) to my high blood pressure!

;)

Mariah Carey, yes or no?
Geza Anda, yes or no?
Yasunori Mitsuda, yes or no?

No x100 on "Mozartette Cowey" and who the fvck even are the other two? ;)
I sense grotesque ignorance within you.

Anda is a pianist. Unusually musically one at that. He actually won my stamp of approval regarding musicality, bringing an unusual level of insight to me regarding the Mozart concertos.

His performance of the middle movement of the 21st piano concerto was the one used in Elvira Madigan. The movement in general, performed by anyone, was not a favorite of mine, actually,...until after Always Be My Baby was integrated into my psyche. Then I appreciated it more.

I went from being a lurker here to posting pretty regularly. There was a post earlier about "Boomerbook" and I think there is something to being younger and wanting that gratification of a large social platform, then as you age and stop giving a shit about what the masses thing you realize that you actually prefer a smaller more meaningful community to engage with.

The biggest threat to the AT forums at the moment is the main AT page's slow march to irrelevance. That was the gateway for basically everyone here I'd wager, but as AT fades into the background and cannot muster up the kind of content most people show up for then its just a slow game of attrition here on the boards.
