Toms benchmark did state is used the updated engine of 2003. So im hoping it wasnt with reduced textures like what the ut2k4 demo had.

Although you have a insane rig, it's still not enough for D3 with max settings.

Both of you are making equally credible statements.

I know the statement I'm about to make may sound like "Oh brother, not this again," but I heard from a Fry's employee that Doom 3 ran fine on his computer with a 9800XT with a 3.0GHZ computer. He said he was a beta tester for id and it ran just fine on ATI cards.

Of course, I drilled him for more details. In response to my questions about AA and AF, he said he didn't turn them on but upped all the in-game settings to max.

I've seen this employee for many years now at Fry's and he seems to be an honest guy (works in the Components department).

Well, I hope he's right cuz my rig will have no trouble at 10x7 then.

Never ever ever ever trust a Best Buy, CompUSA, Circuit City, or Fry's employee. Ever.

Unless he lives in close proximity to IDs offices, I seriously doubt he was a beta tester. He probably downloaded the alpha. He also probably doesn't know what AA ad AF is.

Hehe....

I was passing the time of day with an employee of PC World a few weeks back (I was only looking before you ask!) and I asked him when he thought they may get the latest crop of 6800's and x800XT PE cards in and he said...what's that...oh graphics cards, I don't know mate...ask me one on mattresses....

He knew more about mattresses than pc components...which kinda rounded PC World off for me....LOL 😀

Well, I am not too worried if my 2400+, 1 gig ram and 9800p will run Doom3 well. I have a bit more faith in ID and their abilities as opposed to something like BFV and EA games. I think it will be safe to say that this game (with it representing the new genre of gaming) will run better than most all new games coming out after it using the same engine or "equivalent"😀

I am positive my comp will be blasting through doom 3 at the maxed out 60 fps. I have the settings on far cry maxed with full AA and AF and I NEVER drop below 30 FPS and my average is over 60 FPS.

I guess you haven't read the latest reports that DoomIII will require a 512mb videocard to run at maximum settings. Too bad so sad. You should have dropped that $3000 a year from now if you wanted your system to manhandle DoomIII. Either that or you could have invested in an SLI setup if it really means that much to you.

PC Gamer reviewed DoomIII with 3.0ghz p4 and 6800Ultra and they were only able to enable AA/AF at 1024x768.

first of all NO ONE has reviewed doom 3 yet. Second of all, my processor and video card are both better performers than the setup they "claimed" to have used. If they did manage to test anything it was most likely alpha code that wasn't even finished yet. Too bad so sad I'll post benchmarks for you non believers on AUGUST 3.

THANKS

Hahaha you think an X800XT will beat a 6800U in DoomIII? LOL. You shouldn't be calling your card superior to the 6800U either; they are both very comparable, and are each good at different things.

They tested the final version of the game by the way. When you post your benchmarks make sure you turn on every possible option so that the textures are uncompressed and require 512mb of video memory. Brace yourself for a slideshow though. 😉

Not really.
possibly . . . better replace any defective CD-ROMS

😛

😀

well, we already KNOW - from last year's benchs - Doom III will run GREAT with last year's top cards. 😉

lol, i love how people are so competitive when it comes to their system being able to play a game...let it go, d3 hasn't even been benchmarked yet...of course id will throw the lowest settings possible on the box in order to sell as many copies as possible...it's all marketing. 🙂

and not only that, single player is only 20hrs of gameplay, he he. so many nerds are gonna go shell out $1000's of dollars on computer junk to play $54 game that lasts 20hrs.

This point has been made before, and so has the counter-point. The game engine will drive many up-coming titles, so getting your system ready for D3 means getting it ready for a bunch of upcoming titles as well :light:

Yeah, well, I'm shelling out but not 1000's (100s) for a new comp and Doom III, I feel entitled because my current comp is a 1 ghz PIII, it won't really play any of the new games. I'm gonna get my money's worth out of it like I did with Quake3, I did editing for it for 3 years. Probably be editing for Doom3 for the next three, unless Quake 4 comes out before then. There's a lot more fun to be had out of a game like that if you're into level editing, modeling, texturing, stuff like that.

gonna order my copy tonight! yay!

hope it doesnt need triple the memory on Win XP like the old doom requirements

50 MHz or any Pentium/Athlon
8MB RAM, 64MB for XP (128MB recommended) - OMFG
Windows 95/98/ME/2000/XP
Windows Compatible graphics Card
140MB Free Disk Space
Quad Speed CD-ROM

I just recently upgraded my system and now I find out it only matches the mid range specs for Doom 3. WOW!

I have:

Asus K8V
Athlon64 3000 (overclocked to 2.1Ghz)
1Gb Kingston DDR400 PC3200 Ram
Sapphire Radeon 9800 PRO
80gb 7200rpm Seagate Barracuda HDD
Turtle Beach Santa Cruz soundcard
Plus- a black Hitachi 17" 16ms LCD Monitor

That goon never had any to begin with. He's a board nazi, plain and simple.

I'm wondering if my p4 @ 3.5ghz and a r9800p @ 420\360 can run Doom 3 @ 1280x1024 w/ 4xAA and 8xAF and nice details.... Or do I need to upgrade my video card to a 6800 Ultra? Or upgrade CPU to an a64? Both?

See BFG? Ever since you gave up your funny "What would you rather ride- a cow or a goat?!?!" yelling people just think you're mean!

🙂

You should say something classic like, "The X800XT PE will run Doom3 at 17fps at 16X12, 6X16X, compared to the 6800UE's lowly 14.6fps at 16X12, 4X16X. The X800XT PE is clearly superior!"

That will endear you to all.

😉

did anyone ever say a 3ghz computer and a 9800XT is SLOW ????? Does it surprise you it runs fine on this rig ? a 3ghz PIV and a 9800XT, add some overlock, is a nice system !

I think people have very unrealistic expectations (hardware wise)....i did NOT see 5ghz CPUs on newegg, yet 🙂 I can see he has to turn off AA and AF maybe..but otherwise....

Why in the world run something at 16x12 with AA and AF? That seems like a waste. At that resolution you dont need those.

You obviously have no idea what AF is.

The game will prolly be very scalable. People with old hardware can enjoy it, and nerds with the latest gear can tweak the game for maximum details.
