Megadeth, Slayer and Annihilator are some of the old heavy/thrash metal bands I like.

Also listen to stuff like All That Remains, The Human Abstract, Lamb Of God etc.

Unlike a lot of people, I actually like Bullet For My Valentine. I think their music is melodic and their guitar work is kinda fun. It's just that their lyrics can get depressing at times.

I don't automatically change the channel when BFMV comes on octane like I do with a lot of the stuff the play. Liquid Metal on XM is starting to piss me off lately. It's like in the last 4 months they have lost all the variety of bands they used to play.

That song from the guy from the station who died was the worst song in existence and that was the start of the station sucking. They played it like 2 times every hour.

They like the "New York Hardcore" crap too much, and it's killing the station because that crap is awful.

I liked their first album quite a bit, but then it started to suck... and has sucked more and more as time goes on. There's just no passion like there was in the first album.

I like Bullet For My Valentine, their first couple albums were good but the newer stuff kind of sucks. My favorite newer metal band is Five Finger Death punch, they kick serious ass.

I don't like Lamb of God, I have seen them a few times live and I always thought that the lead singer did not mesh well with the rest of the band.

If you like Bullet For My Valentine, YOU MUST Check out Periphery.

Not exactly the same, but the few people I know that like BFMV just adore Periphery.

Periphery pretty much uses all extended range guitars. 3 guitarists playing 7 and 8 strings tuned low. Sounds deep, thick, and rich.

Heavy Metal is a particular guitar sound/tuning. That's all. The first metal song was without a doubt, You Really Got Me, by the Kinks. They however didn't follow down the path they accidentally created, but many bands heard that song and ran with the sound. The biggest names to do so were Deep purple, Led Zeppelin, and Black Sabbath.

As music and the technology to make it evolved, many bands incorporated metal into their sound or the sound of some of their material. Not may would think of the normally Acid Rock band, Pink Floyd as a metal band, but they certainly used elements of metal in some of their pieces (Have a Cigar, Young Lust).

In the 1980s metal really took off and split into various segments with some diverging greatly from the original sound. There was the Speed Metal of Van Halen, or Joe Satriani, the Thrash Metal of Anthrax, the Hardcore of Slayer, and Metallica, the Glam Metal of Motley Crue, or Gunz n' Roses, the Death Metal of Cannible Corpse, the Industrial Metal of Skinny Puppy and Ministry.

The 90s saw a mash-up of many musical styles plus far more digital technology and electronic music, and the coming into mainstream of Rap and Hip Hop. About midway through there was a recording revolution made possible by the cheap technology, and Alternative was born, and most of it was metalish. Metal was very mainstream. Somewhere along the lines there were revolts against revolts. Some bands came along with that old Deep Purple sound, and we got Retro Metal/Stoner Rock, with such faces as Queens of the Stone Age, Fu Manchu, and High on Fire.

So metal is everywhere these days and it's quite hard to separate. If a band uses electric guitars, they will probably incorporate at least some elements of metal in their works.

Okay, I'm going to get absolutely flamed for this. Back when I was 15, I used to like Limp Bizkit. I hardly listen to them anymore. You may call Fred Durst a douche and call their lyrics juvenile. Perhaps there is some truth to that. But I've always found Wes Borland's riffs to be unique and catchy. And for whatever it's worth, I think they made some melodious and catchy songs. I liked their bass lines too.

Okay, kill me now. :'(

Hey, Periphery sounds Meshuggah-ish but with more singing. I love the song 'Erroneous Manipulation' by Meshuggah. Wish they made more songs like that.

Hendrix is the Godfather of metal dude.

The four founding members of Black Sabbath were sitting around in a club trying to decide what their sound was going to.. they turned to the dude performing on stage and one of them (I don't remember which, but the anecdote was told by Ozzy) said, we want to sound like that guy.

Lemmy was one of Hendrix guitar techs. The day Hendrix died, Lemmy was set to audition for bass player in his band.

Hendrix in his time over in Europe pretty much gave birth to the metal sound that roared out of England with his influence on the early metal pioneers.

fred durst and bizkit were awesome in their day. 3 dollar bill and their next album (its been so long i cant even rememeber the name) are still to this day really good in that weird way that they are.

after the first two though, fred turned into a retard and the whole band went to shit. so much so that it makes it hard to listen to their old stuff... which is sad.

i know limp bizkit was never metal, but it was real in the beginning. i liked korn, stainds first album, early godsmack.. all i thought were modern rock as it should be.

but then i moved on to metal pretty much full time. hatebreed, soulfly, pantera, white chapel, 1st mudvayne album, mushroomhead... i just like the well produced metal bands. its not easy to get that sound and make it sound good.

wtf, ive been reading over the pages of this thread and i still havent found metal? bullet for my valentine fucking BLOWS. what world is this? i dont mean to be rude but i came here thinking this was a discussion about metal.

and nickelback is not considered even rock. i would call it the "autotune" of bands. so generic, so fucking corny.

I love power metal - Blind Guardian, Avantasia, Demons and Wizards, Edguy, Symphony X

I can't stand stuff with growling/screaming. Unfortunately there's some good bands out there in the other metal genres with good instrumentals but the vocals just completely ruin it.

i pretty much only listen to music with growling and screaming, but i actually agree with you. most of the lead metal singers out there cannot growl or scream well. they try, but it sounds awful. it really does ruin a lot of otherwise good metal.

thats why i tend to stick with the more mainstream metal bands like slipknot, hatebreed, soulfly, devildriver and pantera because those bands have master vocalists with world-renound talent. when they scream, it doesnt sound like crap.

Jimi Hendrix hadn't even recorded a rock song, and was till touring around with Motown acts when You Really got Me was charting at #1 in GB and #7 here. Hendrix wouldn't be widely known until 1966. He certainly didn't invent anything that someone already had at least a year and a half prior, though I am sure Hendrix knew of the Kinks.

Man I remember this thread when it came out.
New Avantasia album coming out and Michael Kiske is back in action. Its strange because usually more heavy metal oriented gods like Jorn Lande, Russel Allen, and such are used but this time they're using more hard rock oriented guys like Joe Lynn turner, Biff from Saxon, Ronnie Atkins from Pretty Maids, and Eric Martin from Mr. Big.

I'm pretty sure "The Scarecrow" is one of my top 5 albums ever. Its Euro Classic Power Metal andt its freaking epic and I love it. Amazing vocal work by everyone involved with some great harmonies.

I've also been getting alot into Malmsteen these days. I listened to this song the other day and had a mangasm about a dozen times.

And as always Symphony X continues to be one of the greatest bands to ever grace the earth
