Yea Mastodon is pretty good. I like Zakk Wylde but sometimes BLS sounds like they try to emulate Ozzy too much, their new album is good though.

I hadn't heard kingdom of sorrow, they were surprisingly good.

what are WWE vocals?

WWE, WWF - fake TV wrestling. I'm thinking of guys like the Undertaker, who talk in ridiculous monster voices when they give interviews. Most death metal vocals that I hear remind me of The Undertaker doing an impression of Frankenstein, usually with pretty intricate guitar work going on in the background.

Really when you think about it, it's Zakk Wylde's sound anyways so he's not really emulating Ozzy. Zakk Wylde is one of those guitar players like Dimebag was. You hear him playing and you know exactly who it is. There really aren't many guys playing metal guitars these days that you can pick out of a crowd based on their sound alone.

Other's that I can think of would be Synester Gates from Avenged Sevenfold, and Mark Morton and Willy Adler from Lamb of God. They have a very distinct style, and I can hear it right away.

Is it crappier because it's quieter? Because if that's the only reason then I suggest you keep that as a pristine copy of something untouched by the loudness war.

No it sounds a bit muddier too; not all that clear. I would like to bust out my vinyl copy and listen to that version to see how it sounds, but I have not had a record player for years.

'Death growl.' You may have also heard some 'hardcore' vocals, which is like a death growl with head cold.

Mikael Akerfeldt is arguably the baddest motherfucker on the planet when it comes to death growls, but also sings like a goddamn angel.

If you want to 'understand' death metal vocals a little better, Opeth is a great way to do it. There are ten-minute prog-rock masterpieces that have maybe a minute of harsh vocals; but they absolutely make the fucking song. Beauty must be punctuated with brutality (yeah, I know, that sounds kinda rapey).

if you love BTBAM, you prob would also like Protest the Hero, Asking Alexandria, Memphis May Fire and Miss May I

if you don't already listen to them

Really not sure how you lump those bands together. I listen to all of em. AA is one of my favorite bands right now but dont consider them close to PTH or BTBAM. Miss May I's latest album is really good too.

That's just not a metal scream. It sounds like world's longest awkward orgasm.

When you say 'metal scream' the first thing that comes to my mind is something like This Calling. Okay, 'metalcore,' but I think screaming is part of the 'metal-'.

Even if you don't like ATR, I'd think you gotta admit it's a hell of an opening for an album.

Too bad their newest album is shit.

The guy in that video isn't even in a metal band, but that's a metal scream. Everyone's is different. Just because it doesn't fit the vocal range you might think it should doesn't mean it isn't. It sure isn't rock, and it isn't pop and not everyone can do that for that long, although I've heard some death metal growls that are close.

Agreed. I use to love Trivium. The last few albums have been eh to me.

Actually, I don't mind their new stuff either. When bands put out the same kind of stuff, people say they're being repetitive. When they put out different stuff, they're accused of selling out or just plain sucking.

Yeah that scream is long, but it doesn't sound good.

Now this is a great note. Not as loud, but very high and help long.

Yes.

There is a huge difference between heavy metal and death metal. However, to somebody that doesn't listen to metal, it all sounds the same, and is widely regarded as 'noise.'

The difference between heavy metal and death metal is largely 1) the vocals, and 2) speed of the music. Most people are put off by the vocals, which I can understand. It's abrasive, and certainly not for everybody. On the other hand, the music behind the vocals is quite often extremely technical, well written, and very difficult to play. That's what death metal has evolved into today. How fast can we play, and how much can we challenge ourselves with odd time changes, yet still make a cohesive song.

For somebody that hasn't listened to much/any death metal, I would recommend some Arch Enemy. Some of the best guitar solos and leads you'll hear in metal. They're pretty heavy, and labeled as 'melodic death metal,' though they're straying from death metal more and more with each album. Still though, awesome guitars.

What kind of stuff are you into now? Just Pantera?

I agree with you 100%.

What are everyone's thoughts on Job for a Cowboy? I like them a lot more now that they are doing straight death metal and ditched the crappy pig squeals of deathcore.

If you don't like it at least stick around for the end of the song. The solo and the more melodic parts at the end are great in my opinion.
